Leptin helps suppress food intake and stimulate energy expenditure, while ghrelin stimulates appetite, fat production, and body growth. When one is sleep deprived, the level of leptin drops and the level of ghrelin increases. ~ The result is a drastic increase in hunger. ~ One study reported a 24% increase in hunger, with excessive, uncontrollable cravings for calorie and carbohydrate packed foods such as cookies, candy and cake. It can all add up to a vicious cycle of late night binges, lack of adequate sleep, uncontrolled snacking, late night binges, and so on."

Yes, it's hard to do these 'list' things...............

Things that give my life meaning are

- my work and all that I contribute to that

- my Buddhist practice

- my friends

- reading and hobbies

- fitness - swimming, running, gym, walking

- being part of the community

- Spark People

- family

- being a role-model

My Garmin also prompts me with a buzz every hour - "Time to move" this often makes me laugh when I'm at work - which can be VERY physically demanding!

DAY #34 FOOD REPLACES MEANING

This lesson has BORED written all over for me. Sitting too long in a computer or TV comma. This is when I can easily turn to food as a distraction. Getting up and away for a snack wouldn't be so bad, but unfortunately that turns into mindless eating many times.

Like Janet, and I think most of us here, I have plenty of meaningful things in my life already and I don't want to add any more. What I have been working on is getting rid of some, simplifying, so that I can focus on and appreciate more what I do have.

My Fitbit has a feature on it that I really like. It reminds me every hour if I haven't gotten up and moved around.

Day 34 - Food Replaces Meaning

I do need to remember that - one of the things we know but don't always keep present.

Use meaning to replace food as comfort to emotional cravings

Day 34 - Food replaces meaning

1. Write a list of things that currently give you meaning in your life.
Having a relationship with God through reading the Bible and prayer
Relationship with my husband and son
My job
Serving as treasurer for a nonprofit.
My church relationships
Having a variety of friends

2. Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have.
I don't feel a need to add more things.
I spend time with people in a wide variety of ways. Part of my challenge is to avoid tempting foods in the process.
I also want to brush up on work skills by reading some chapters in some professional books I have.

3. I am currently in Bible Study Fellowship which gets me into God's Word every day, unless I'm slacking.

• Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have.
• Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning. Record what you did.

Well, that was clever to precede the list of things you love with things that give you meaning, because a lot of them are on both lists. And it gives me something to think about doing rather than eat, using food to replace meaning when I am feeling empty or down. I can start by reading these two lists, Day 33 and Day 34 before I put anything in my mouth. The other day I was feeling a bit empty, so I ate ice cream. Really, seriously? Shouldn't I be past that by now? Mostly, I am, I have improved a lot in my health habits in the last 10 years influenced by Spark and in general by seeking healthier ways to live, but I still need some replacement behaviour strategies, and I think Day 33 and 34 list reading may fit the bill.

I like that this thread link starts at the first post, and then when I reply, it becomes the last post, so I don't see what others have posted before I think through and post myself. And then after it is interesting to read what the others have come up with.

What gives my life meaning

1 Being useful, contributing to family health, wealth and prosperity, materially, and mentally, spiritually,
2 Working in practical areas, like on our family farm, in our home, volunteering in the community.
3 Living a life that is a good example and influence to others, especially to young people.
4 Being worthy of respect, in my life skills and attitudes and moral choices and behaviour.
5 Making an effort to improve and enjoying the fruit of my efforts.
6 Being able to live a balanced, responsible, joyful life.

• Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have

Right now I am trying harder to build routines for home care. I am also, at age 61 and DH is 63, am trying to shape how retirement will change our lives, what we would like to do together, what our daily routines will be and what we would like to do with more free time. DD and her partner are keen to take over the farm.

I spent a lot of my life avoiding the domestic scene, I worked on the farm and took good care of my kids, their needs, their education and upbringing with DH, but liked and followed to a fault the attitude that spending time with the family was more important than doing the housekeeping chores. Now that the kids are no longer home, housekeeping requirements aren't as vast as they used to be, I would like to build better home care and maintenance routines.

Another thing that I am interested in to give my life more meaning, is to have more knowledge and opinion regarding participating and shaping public policy, be that in our industry, be that in our community. I have life experience. I want to use it to discern and help with shaping the future within the democratic opportunities that are available to me in this land of freedom and choice.

• Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning. Record what you did

Anything that supports family and community harmony, development and prosperity builds my sense of meaning.
Today I am going to plan to continue to improve on the home front, gardening and house cleaning, and I am going to go to sleep not late, on plan.
This weekend my daughter-in-law is coming to visit, we are going to spend the day at a cultural festival that includes my niece and will cap the day with attending a barbecue we have been invited to hosted by niece's boyfriend and family. Building and enjoying family connections :) The fly in the ointment is that DH will not be going with us, sigh, he doesn't like "spending all day doing nothing" his take on spending all day at a cultural festival.

Day 34 - Food replaces meaning

Take a look at the amount of meaning in your own life right now. Even if you can’t change jobs or skip classes and events, you can work on building meaning in other areas. Perhaps it’s time to join a book club or volunteer at a homeless shelter. Or pull out your recipe books and find meaning in creating healthy meals.

Today

1. Write a list of things that currently give you meaning in your life.
Waking every morning to a new day and seeing what it brings
Being part of SparkPeople and the structure it gives me for living my healthy lifestyle
Physically moving my body makes me feel “alive”
Enjoying the little things that mean a lot to me
Inner reflection and thinking about life and what it means to me
Being available for what my family needs from me
Giving guidance and opinions to my 26 year old Grandson
Listening, counseling and being there for whatever my 48 year old Son needs
Giving 1 on 1 time with my 6-year old Granddaughter
Caring for two pets, one with Addisons disease and the other is diabetic
Being part of a friendly, caring neighborhood with wonderful people
Helping where I can for anyone who needs me
Going for long walks and enjoying nature
Long telephone conversations with friends who live far away
I’m a very curious person and I love learning new things
Playing video games and having fun
Music and dancing

2. Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have.

I want to do daily Bible study and join a church family
I want to do more research about my lingering health problems
I want to simplify my life

3. Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning. Record what you did.
Had a surprise visit from neighbors who lifted my spirits and they talked about some of their memories from years ago. It gave me such a warm feeling being in their presence and it had sentimental meaning to me.

DAY #34 FOOD REPLACES MEANING - ROUND 2

I no longer work so the examples in today's lesson do not apply to me specifically, but the very thought that ran through my head was exactly the thought Linda wanted us to explore - turning to food out of boredom because we lack meaningful challenges in our lives. Boredom is something I can easily identify with. I have experienced it and eating to "take up the time and make it pass faster" was exactly what I did. Time does not go more quickly just because we want it to no matter how much we eat. The clock tics at the same pace second by second! So it is ME that needs to get moving. To distract myself with something meaningful and challenging. That is what will move me AND the clock forward in just "a blink of an eye" emoticon

Write a list of things that currently give meaning to your life:
- developing healthy eating habits
- building strength through fitness exercises
- supporting Mother Nature through gardening
- planning activities for my friends
- spending time with family
- being connected to a church family

Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have:
- volunteering at church. We have a Ministry Fair coming up the first weekend in May that I am excited about. I have wanted to increase my participation at church but have not been able to pinpoint in what area so I am hoping to find some clarity.

Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning and record what you did:
- Easter is quickly approaching and today is Holy Thursday. I will be at church tonight. I'm hoping there will be an opportunity to reach out and connect with some fellow parishioners.

Thanks Gill for your kind comment on my "creating joy" post yesterday. When I put in the time and effort, Linda's wonderful lessons and our ongoing group discussions really have me thinking and evaluating so much that I'm struggling to keep up. The effort is totally worth it especially over time where I can see I have made positive inroads into my life which are well beyond weight loss/maintenance.

A few of the things that give my life meaning and were unintentionally neglected before retirement are slowly restoring our home and property and old friendships. Also, a daily devotional time each morning with my beloved cups of coffee.

I continue to set small goals and "to do" lists which give me direction and a sense of accomplishment daily.

Aura, Thanks ~ I love the exercises. I was laughing too. I'm always looking for new ones to use in water aerobics and yoga and there were a few that I could use.

I have a colleague (currently on maternity leave) who eats pretty much all the time, even when she's walking and working - there's always a bag of sweets of chips in her hand! Most odd - and, yes, she's overweight. Also, I worked in an office for a while, and there was always a table with junk food on it and a constant stream of people going to it for snacks!

Day #34 Food Replaces Meaning

OMG, what a horrible picture Linda painted in today's lesson as she described the Call Center staff shoving handful after handful of junk food in their mouths without even looking at what they were eating. I could picture the scene so clearly in my head and I think that is possibly because I am sure that is exactly what I have done at times!

Linda's solution is to add more meaning to our lives. Well, here is my take on it. Every day life is not an ongoing party! Most days are hum-drum routine. I am lucky to be retired and so I have more time than some to add "meaning". I have a few friends who still work and at times my heart aches for them. They get up in the morning, go to work, take care of other necessary tasks, go to bed, and get up the next morning to do it all over again. These are the ones who I think could use some "meaning" in their life.

Every once in a while I can get quite depressed about the unending routine of daily life, but I have plenty of options to liv'in my life up when this happens.

Family - I am the social director of our household and I always have a listing of area events to attend if I find myself bored with life. I also spend 1 day a week at our DD's home working on her landscaping. We also get together just for the love of it at least once a month. One night a week I have my 91 yr. old father for dinner.

Friends - I am also the social director for our friends. Yup. We seem to have friends who depend on me to always be the one to orchestrate a get together. We have a small group of friends, but it keeps me busy enough. I also am the organizer of our Girl's Night Out every 1-2 months for a group of 7. In between I have a couple of walking friends and I have a couple of lunch buddies.

Church - I attend Mass weekly. Except for 4 months during the summer I attend 2 Bible Study groups. Plus I attend other events/activities sponsored by our church.

Community - I have lots of interests that get me out into our community. I could use some work in the area of volunteering. For now I am using my gardening skills to help keep some Community Flowerbeds weed free.

Life is always fluctuating and developing, but this I know for sure - I am happy with my life and find it meaningful and fulfilling enough right now.

Day 34 food replaces meaning
Add meaning by helping others and made fun business cards so if anyone has minor repairs, dr appointment, therapy, or need a ride to go someplace they know they can call us
Can’t really add more as we usually are busy every day but we enjoy spending time with the person we are with and have it about them. Lonely, widows and sometimes just like to have someone to talk to
Leaving soon to help my parents as they invited 100 people over this Sunday and the next and they make all the food and help them bless others

Day 34 - Food Replaces Meaning

Great, thought provoking lesson!

Meaning?
- still being in love with the boy I married 50 years ago and still seeing the boy in the old man
- 3 children, all responsible, loving, productive adults building families of their own
- 3 grandchildren, everyone of them embedded deeply in my heart
- 1 great-grandson, who has brought so much fun & renewal into our hearts in just 15 months
- 2 siblings; at a time in life when I know many who have lost siblings I still have both of mine
- health that is good enough that we can both still travel; and we are working at better health
- a home we love
- a retirement we can live on
- the ability and desire to keep learning
Well, you get the message, I could go on and on about the things that have meaning in my life.

Could making myself more unhealthy and inactive with food EVER trump one of the things on my list? NO, a resounding NO!

Self-care?
Eat well, pray, stay in contact with all the important folks in my life, exercise when I can, take the dratted medicine, and one other important thing.....Keep Sparking!

My family
My faith
Friends
So much more - art, reading, etc.

I have been adding more and more movement to my days, i.e. making sure I make it to the gym on days off for water walking, yoga stretches. I read for pleasure and I read for my health. I attend Mass each week. I have a wonderful family and I thoroughly enjoy spending time with them.

I have many things that provide meaning (or a purpose).

I am a loving and caring girlfriend, family member and friend.
-Tom and I are blessed to have each other.
-I make a point of spending time with my Sister who is also a widow and lives an hour away.
-My best friend and I can be apart for a month if life is busy, and then pick up as if we just saw each other 10 minutes ago. This time of year his weekends are full of birding and outdoor activities.

I help make peoples lives better, businesses to thrive and strengthen communities through my career.

-I coach and develop my employees to help them reach their career goals and upward development.
-I provide solutions to help my customers reach their financial goals.
-I actively volunteer at the Friends of the Library book sale, and at the food bank to sort donated items, I teach financial literacy classes.

I provide a safe and happy environment for our 3 rescue kitties.
-lots of love
-our house has a plethora of cat toys, kitty condos and yes our queen size mattress can sleep 5 if you count the two adults

I love to bake and cook
-Tom and I had the marvelous experience of restoring a Marsh Hoosier baking cabinet, c 1940 and all of my baking supplies are stored there. I bake from it at least a couple of times a month and more frequently around the Christmas holiday.
-Tom and I share cooking duties, and I do the dishes no matter who cooks.

I will comfortably retire before I die
-That may seem morbid. With the cost of healthcare I need to work until I am eligible for medicare. There was a time period between retirement and working part time that I had to rely on my credit cards to make ends meet. I am working on paying those off so that I can retire in another 5 to 6 years debt free.

For today:
-I am meeting with our CRA expert this morning to discuss community outreach opportunities in our area.
-I will plan what I am going to bake or make for our manager's summer picnic coming up on Thursday. I am supposed to bring lettuce, pickles and cheese for the hamburgers as well.

I do enjoy how this new book is making us dig deeper into our reasons for eating and come up with alternatives.

Day 34 Food replaces meaning July 21, 2018
Meaning and connection
Take a look at the amount of meaning in your own life right now. Even if you can’t change jobs or skip classes and events, you can work on building meaning in other areas. Perhaps it’s time to join a book club or volunteer at a homeless shelter. Or pull out your recipe books and find meaning in creating healthy meals.
Do More self care
Identify some places during your day where you can slip in a little self-care activity. For example, set a timer for twenty minutes and make your meal or snack last that long. If nothing else, this will keep you from heading back to the buffet or potluck table for more helpings. Or if you sit either at job or computer do the same and set a timer to get up and do a few exercises or stretches.
Today
• Write a list of things that currently give you meaning in your life.
God
My family-being a Mother, grandmother, and daughter
My tops family-being part of field staff
being a KOPS
spending time with Mom
sure there is more but need to think on it
• Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have.
working on staying in leeway
work at being not letting stress derail me
Pray more
Do active things with family it dont always have to be food related
Make plans with tops family and immediate family
find a way to connect with couisns and aunts
• Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning. Record what you did.

Oh crikey! Another 'hard' one! These lessons feel like quite deep counselling/coaching sessions and need more than a day. However, being pushed to think about these questions quickly is perhaps part of their power - just saying the first things that come into my head.

This one feels quite scary - what if my life has no meaning?!

I am going to parkrun this morning - this gives me meaning as a member of a wonderful, health- promoting movement.
I cleared up some rubbish the gulls had picked over - being a member of a community gives me meaning.
I am lucky in having paid work which does give me meaning - i support adults with learning disabilities.
Being part of a community is important for my sense of meaning.
I belong to a Buddhist group which gives me meaning.
Being active here on Spark gives me meaning.
Meeting up with friends and being helpful and supportive gives me meaning.
Following a mostly vegan lifestyle gives me meaning.
Learning Cornish gives me meaning.
Belonging to the local library and swimming pool gives me meaning.
Being a mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt gives me meaning.

I do have volunteering at the local theatre on my list.

Today I get up and out and join in at parkrun.
