DAY #35 NEED FOR RENEWAL

There have been times when I felt like this; a weariness that just won't let up; my inner spirit worn out. It reminds me of how my motivation can wax and wane depending on how the "battle of the bulge" is going. The hard work of being diligent can be draining especially when life is crazy busy and stressful. Sometimes it can take several attempts to remove the dark cloud that hangs over my head; when I feel like I just can't get my "bucket" full no matter how hard I try.

Thankfully, these times are far and few between. The journey gets easier the less I fight against what I really need to do in order to reach my goal. But all of life cannot be just goal oriented. Sometimes I need to remember to STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES! A lovely, peaceful walk outside fits that bill perfectly for me.

Day 35 - Need for Renewal

Gill, I really liked the Spark Guide to Walking Meditation article. I do a lot of walking, Monday with my BFF, Tuesday short hike with friends and our dogs, Wednesday short hike with a good friend and her dog, Thursday with my neighbour and our dogs, Friday Saturday and Sunday and Monday Tuesday afternoons with my dogs close to home. Lots of walking, although solo walking (with dogs) is best for meditation, and I do that several times, usually 5 times a week.

I am intrigued with observing my last year's posts and my euphoric frame of mind, this year I am feeling dysphoric, what events between now and next year will lead to next year's mind frame.

I have added the list of things that add meaning and give me joy to my stop signs routines for not letting my emotions lead to feeling like I need soothing that feels good for the moment but is not good in the long run. This week's days Day 33 - Create Some Joy and Day 34 - Food Replaces Meaning ... plus this week goes full circle from Day 31 - Restore Yourself to Day 35 - Need for Renewal

Because I posted today's lesson before I went to work, I practised my 'renewal walk' on the way to work - it's about 10 mins walk. I enjoyed listening to the birds, feeling the wind on my face, smelling the fresh morning air, feeling snug in my winter coat and hat, the weight of my bag on my back, the feel of the ground beneath my feet.

It was good to focus on those sensations rather than the time etc.

When I left work this evening, I had another walk, up to the post office to pick up a parcel, so I remembered to do this again.

Then when I got home, instead of going straight into the next thing I had to do, I changed into my workout clothes, made a cup of tea, then sat on the sofa for 20 mins or so, watching a bit of my DVD - relaxing.

Day 35 - Need for renewal

Renewal Walk -
Right now, I'm in a good space in my life, so this is not so critical. However, there is something refreshing about walking outside, and I do it often with my husband and dog. This was really important for me to do alone several years ago, and I'm blessed to have some woods nearby where only a few other people are ever walking.

Also, I love sitting in the guest room, which is also my sitting room. I love the way it is decorated and enjoy time alone doing sitting activities like reading my Bible, reading a book, reviewing my goals, etc.

• Decide when you’ll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.
• Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.
• Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.

• Decide when you’ll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.

Right now I am on a personal high after a very wonderful family vacation. These last few days have made me feel like I am indeed blessed, happy, don't have anything significant to complain about, don't understand how I can ever feel low and discouraged. But I know that will happen at some point, and I am thinking from my position of euphoria, how to arm myself against the lows of life.
First thing that slips for me is not getting enough sleep, or not having healthy sleeping patterns, then getting lazy, losing motivation to do anything, and blaming it on being tired.
I need to return to my routines and not get emotional, and when I get my responsibilities done, I start to feel better, then to top the day, I do something that I enjoy, like doing something outdoors, spending some time Sparking or internet surfing, listening to music I like, connecting with my family and extended family, making some plans for my next vacation or my next day off ...

• Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.

Look - look around, be aware, don't just look down at the ground or tunnel vision on my task
- there are so many wonderful things to see, the sky, the birds, the happy dogs, the green all around, nature, DH thriving, family happy
Listen birds, there is a certain bird with an unusual call, I am trying to identify it
- the pulsators of the the milking machines, it has a womb-environment-like enchantment magic
- the frogs at night
- the gentle rush of the wind
Taste - my cooking, haha, I do try to make tasty dishes that are healthy too.
Feel, touch - clean bed sheets, patting the dogs, their warmth and wiggles of happyiness, the feel of the sunshine on my skin, the feel of the wind when I ride my bike
Smell haha, I couldn't remember this 5th one, and in fact I don't have a very good sense of smell, the best smell is the aroma of the evergreen forest !! I don't really like how flowers smell. I like the smell of sun-dried hay. I like watermelon and peach scents in soap or shampoo

• Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.

I feel wonderful after a hike in the woods up the nearby mountain (or a longer hike further from home) anytime as an escape, but the after hike feel is better is I have done all my chores/duties and am not behind on them

Returning to edit, I see I missed the point, I was supposed to limit my senses recital to the renewal walk, not my favourite senses experiences. But it was fun.

Day 35 - Need for Renewal

When you become life tired, self-nurturing activities such as taking a bath or listening to music can help. But sometimes, they aren’t enough. You need a deeper level of healing, one that reaches your core and pulls it back up. You need renewal.

Today

• Decide when you’ll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.
My quiet early morning walks in my garden are frequent and nourish my soul.

• Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.

Sight: Bright, shining sunshine, beautiful flowering trees and spring flowers, dew covered lush green grass, beautiful and clear blue sky, a butterfly flittering from flower to flower.

Hearing: Many different birds singing, birds splashing in bird bath water, squirrels chattering and rustling branches and leaves as they jump through the trees, vehicles in distance, my own voice quietly singing.

Taste: Lovely tasting cup of morning tea.

Smell: Mother Earth’s fragrant soil after a rain, lilacs from neighbor’s yard, and fragrances from nearby flowers blooming.

Touch: Touching branches of pink dogwood to bring flowers closer for me to see, bent down and touched the dew on the wet grass, petted my dog who was walking with me.

• Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.
While walking through my garden, I quite often softly sing a favorite hymn (this was my Mother’s favorite hymn, too, and I think of her and her loving ways and it adds to my peace). This is very relaxing for me.

Enjoy the words...

In the Garden
I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

(He speaks and the sound of His voice)
(Is so sweet the birds hush their singing)
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

100 More DWL- Day 35 Need for Renewal

You need a deeper level of healing, one that reaches your core and pulls it back up. You need renewal.

1. Decide when you'll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.

Morning about 10am, beautiful day, was going to be warmer later.

2. Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.

Eyes - saw beautiful blue sky, very few clouds in the sky, the shapes of plants (nature is amazing), the colours of the flowers too.
Ears - heard lots of birds singing, varying tunes, also heard a lawnmower type of noise and in the distance a train passing by and an aeroplane.
Smell - fresh air which smelled really clean and fresh.
Taste - Noticed the taste of the air which tasted fresh
Touch - I touched the leaves at places which were mostly smooth

3. Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.

Like Linda I agree this is an amazing activity for getting a total mental break in a short time. I also forgot about my stress and the list of things on my mind. I always feel calmed by taking time to enjoy my walk and the surroundings when I take the time. Again thanks Linda for reminding me to look around me and take the time for renewal. Great job! emoticon

DAY #35 NEED FOR RENEWAL - ROUND 2

Continuously pushing through the hard work of losing weight and be exhausting! Even the mundane chores of living - get up, cook, eat, clean house, cook, eat, do laundry, go grocery shopping, do other tasks/errands, cook, eat, go to bed exhausted, can feel depleting to me. So I know exactly what Linda is talking about.

But life goes on and it is what it is, so I'm thankful these feelings are betting farther and fewer between as I learn to nurture and renew myself better and as my weight loss journey gets easier.

- Decide when you'll do a renewal walk and focus on details:

Being out in nature always gives me a feeling of renewal. I don't know when I will need a Renewal Walk, but the other day I took our dog for an evening walk through my favorite neighborhood park.

- Record what you noticed or experienced:

This park is in a densely wooded place and the last time I was there the roadway was still covered in ice and snow. Not so this time. It was a cool spring evening. The air felt heavy and wet like spring frequently does. There were still lots of broken branches and twigs on the roadway that had broken off the trees. Spring clean up by the City had not been done yet. It is always quite and serene in this Park. We only passed one other couple there. However, there were lots of squirrels frolicking about and we saw to groups of deer.

- Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirits felt:

I love this Park for the peaceful quietness of Mother Nature. She lifts my spirits every time! Ollie was especially well behaved during our walk and so we spent even longer than I had planned just enjoying the beautiful evening.

Many of the things on my list from yesterday (things that give meaning to my life) will give me this same sense of renewal. For me, it is all about breaking away from the mundane routine of life; something distracting that slows us down so we can connect with our inner self! I sometimes refer to these days as my "Mental Health" days and I'm not ashamed to admit that sometimes I need them in order to refuel and push on.

Day 35 - Need for Renewal

• Decide when you’ll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.

My favorite renewal walk was when a friend brought me to a labyrinth and showed me how to walk it. I don't know where there is a labyrinth near me so I can't repeat this experience. I do love walking at the botanical garden and appreciate the beauty. Today we had a light rain which was perfect for walking in and renewing my spirit. Another thing I like to do is walk on my driveway at night and look up at the stars.

• Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.

Breathing fresh air through my nose. Stimulated by colors and scents. Happy to be out in nature and taking in the wondrous sights. A light breeze feels good on my skin. Slow and carefree, easy going, enjoying the time.

• Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.

Calm. Peaceful. Awed. Whatever was stressing me out, doesn't seem so bad now.

Our fenced courtyard is wonderfully private and I can find shady areas. The only disadvantage is except for the pool, it's all covered in concrete. I have to postpone my renewal walk until we can drive to a park where I can put my toes in the grass and savor being in touch with the earth. So I'll come back and finish this afterwards.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

Day #35 Need for renewal

I did take a renewal walk around our large farm. I was very grateful that hubby mowed a path for me.
Sight: the darkening sky, the cornfield, the grass, a bunny, trees and our house.
Sound: many birds, a car on the distant road and the wind blowing the corn.
Smell: fresh air, rain,
Taste: water I always carry
Touch: feel of the water container, my pocket and the tissue I needed. ;)
emoticon Before the walk was really over, I made a mad dash back home just before the downpour!

I had a lovely (if a little quick for a renewal walk with my hubbie), I enjoyed the cool and fresh air, I love the shapes of the plants (nature is amazing), the amazing colours of plants as we walked, the noise of the birds and even some children playing. I felt so calm and clear minded when I arrived home again.

In the evening today I also decided to spend some time in my garden. The flowers are suffering from the lack of rain but are still looking good. I took some dead plants off, fed these plants and enjoyed the colours and the bees and others insects buzzing around enjoying the nectar. I always feel calmed by taking time to enjoy the garden and my surroundings! Thanks Linda for reminding me to look out around me! emoticon

Day #35 Need For Renewal

This is a fantastic suggestion and experience that I need to do again. I did this for two different assignments when I was doing my yoga certification training. The first one we chose a quiet place on campus and tried to close our eyes as possible and go barefoot, as slowly as we could and just experience all five senses. The next time was at a beautiful botanical meditation garden that overlooked the ocean. Both times were incredible eye, mind opening experiences that we wrote about and also discussed.

That being said why do I too often find myself pulling weeds and dragging a hose around noticing everything that needs to be done instead of truly enjoying everything more? Many fabulous plants and trees that we have lovingly planted are in full bloom right now. I notice and enjoy them but not as much as I seem to notice what needs to be done. First morning that I do not leave early I will go by myself and only notice the beauty of it all with my five senses.

This was just exactly spot-on today - I was so surprised when I opened my book and read today's lesson, because I'd already decided that my 'day off' was going to be a leisurely walk.

I've blogged about it on my Spark page.

Using Linda's prompts, I walked along noticing what I was seeing (flowers, trees, leaves, butterflies, blue skies, birds, fields of corn); what I was hearing (birds, the sound of my footsteps, my water sloshing in my bottle, birds, planes, motorbikes and cars, the wind in the trees, my breathing); smelling (the sun-baked earth, the green plant smells); feeling (my breath, the warmth of the sun on my skin, the heat under my hat, the coolness of the breeze every now and then, my clothes); tasting (the water I drank, my own mouth, the first blackberry of the season!)

It felt so good to do this. A 'mindful' walking experience. I was blessed by a beautiful day too.

Day #35 Need For Renewal

I can sure relate to Linda's lessen example today. There have been many times that I have felt like I continuously push through difficult days and experience a weariness that doesn't let up. She hit it right on the nail head when she says if feels like the core of your body, your spirit, is worn out. You go through the motions of the day without feeling any joy in your life. You might have brief periods of fun & laughter, but nothing that is lasting. You feel LIFE TIRED!

We are all familiar of how difficult and stressful this weight loss journey can be. It can drain you of all your energy and joy. At least it does that to me sometimes. Somehow, someway that I can't point my finger on right now, I manage to pull myself up by the boot straps and get back at it. Maybe I have even used the technique that Linda recommended today, but just didn't realize it.

I have heard of this "walk" before. Although it was called something else, like Meditation Walk or Prayer Walk, the technique was the same with the result of decreased feeling of stress and feeling overwhelmed by life. My walks are ALWAYS designated for fitness. I actually feel guilty if I am not walking at a fast pace.

A couple weeks ago when our DD and GKs came to visit for the evening we walked to our destination. My GKs are not fond of walking and told me they would rather be riding their bikes! Oh well, we were walking and they did not walk with any speed. I was constantly ahead of the group and having to stop and let them catch up with me. I missed a good opportunity for Renewal Walking. I will have to figure out how to mentally manage this challenge of walking at a relaxed pace some times.

My sister in law is here till Tuesday and does not walk, so I will postpone my renewal walk until then. I love company and my family, but being the pleaser, I’m looking forward to my regular eating and exercise habits. Thank you my friends here for being in my life!

One day at a time!

Day 35 - Need for renewal

Yes! I need a renewal walk. We have a beautiful nature area just several miles far from here that will be good for that. I have done something similar over the years walking right here in my neighborhood but I think this renewal walk calls for something that will take me further into nature.

I often make my walks "gratitude Walks" or "prayer" walks and I find that is so relaxing for me. I kind of return to Center while I am walking and praying or counting my blessings. I'm not sure when I will do my renewal walk since we seem to be in a long rainy spell and I haven't been feeling too well but I will not forget this lesson and I will be doing a renewal walk that will refresh all my senses and, hopefully, leave me with my strongest self.

I love this concept! I have done renewal walks in the past while working through the grief of widowhood and always found them beneficial.

I would prefer to do this outdoors, alone in nature. The weather today is not going to allow that.

I am going to postpone my walk until Thursday when our company picnic for the managers in my district is planned at a large local park. I will arrive early and park in a different area of the park to take my walk, then drive over to the picnic area for the day.

I will post my results in my blog that day.

Day 35 Need for renewal

When you become life tired, self-nurturing activities such as taking a bath or listening to music can help. But sometimes, they aren’t enough. You need a deeper level of healing, one that reaches your core and pulls it back up. You need renewal.

Today

• Decide when you’ll do a renewal walk. Allow plenty of time to focus on details.
• Record what you noticed or experienced with each of your five senses.
• Write notes about how your energy and your inner spirit felt after the renewal walk.
