100 More DWL- Day 45 Safe places

• Write a plan for creating a safe place.
• Set up and personalize the area. Describe what’s in your safe place and how it looks.
• Spend at least ten minutes in your safe place today. Write about what you did and how it felt.

• Write a plan for creating a safe place..

My safe place is on the sofa in front of the tv which is spouting the news in the background while I am on my laptop, Sparking, internet surfing, reading, making plans for the future on my computer journal

• Set up and personalize the area. Describe what’s in your safe place and how it looks.

My safe place is in my house that I designed with DH and built 25 years ago, we have a comfortable sofa set in the great room that includes open-concept living room, dining room and kitchen with hardwood floors and wood crafted furniture and natural hues and a high ceiling. I love that this is my house designed to my taste. I have big picture windows to see outside, the green fields, the cows outside, the trees and buildings in the yard.

• Spend at least ten minutes in your safe place today. Write about what you did and how it felt.

I love my house :) I love my great room living space :) I love my life :)

100 More DWL- Day 45 Safe places

I still find my bed to be a safe place as I said in the 100 days but realise now the sofa in my conservatory looking out on my lovely garden could be another "safe place" - it is cosy, comforting, relatively peaceful (can also open the doors and get fresh air easily if required).

Like Maribeth I too also like reading and it can take me away from the scene (or the food).

I am also partial to spending time looking at my more shapely body in the bathroom mirror.

Day 45 - Safe places

Whenever you're going through a major change in life, emotional safety is especially important. Any time you start a new job or move to a different home, don’t wait for months to “fix things up.” Take immediate steps to make yourself feel comfortable and emotionally safe, even in a brand-new setting.

Today

• Write a plan for creating a safe place.

My true safe place is in my faith and my beliefs as I live my daily life. But, for today’s writing about a physical safe place, I can say my home and garden are safe places for me. This is where I feel safe, relaxed, and calm. I can find peace there whenever I get stressed or anxious. I feel comfortable. I’ve lived in my home for more than 20 years and over those years have put many elements together to make my safe place.

• Set up and personalize the area. Describe what’s in your safe place and how it looks.

My home is in a development and over the years I have worked to bring privacy to my secluded garden by planting trees and shrubs. My private garden is a place of solitude and a safe retreat for me. There is a fountain with bubbling water where the birds come for a bird bath and squirrels and raccoons come to drink water. I enjoy watching them. Colorful, painted bird houses attract the birds. Wind chimes play their melodies in the soft, gentle wind. Butterflies bring their beauty to my butterfly bushes where they drink the nectar. Flowers and trees are blooming and their fragrance fills the air. Garden sculptures and garden art include angels, animals, and garden gnomes. Soft pillows are on the seats for relaxing (chaise, glider, swing). The table has a cup of tea and a book calling to me to come and read it. My favorite soft music is playing while a gentle breeze is blowing.

I enjoy all this either while outside in the garden or looking at it from inside my house. I have a 4 season view as I sit in my comfy rocking chair in my family room. While inside and looking outside thru the wide sliding glass doors, I see it as my own “living painting”. I position potted flowers and place sculptures as the seasons change for spring, summer, fall, and winter. The frame of the sliding glass door makes my view look like a painting.

• Spend at least ten minutes in your safe place today. Write about what you did and how it felt.
Done. Restorative for both my physical body and my spirit.

Day 45 my safe place
We live in a large farm house with lots of rooms that aren’t used except when our big family comes home a couple times a year. I do have my favorite spaces that are just mine.

The “parlor” with comfy furniture, special pictures of travels, and a scene I’ve painted on the wall is a favorite.
The swing on the front porch is nice on a summer day.

my safe space is an extra large lounge chair that my dog can fit in next to me. I face the view of a small "lake" (pond?), and greenery to the side screening the neighbor. I'm surrounded by side tables that hold reading, writing, & misc stuff that magically increases. Oh well, it's as safe as it gets. A couple of deep breaths, & my blessings are more than I can count.

Not sure if this counts as a 'safe place' activity, but this afternoon, after my friend went home, I was tempted by chocolate. Then I remembered yesterday - and decided to make a cup of tea, and sit with my knitting. I listened to a story on BBC Sounds (catch-up radio and podcasts).

The chocolate is still in the cupboard - for tomorrow!

My safe place is my sunroom. It's my favorite room in my home. I see the backyard, woods, wild life, flowers. I sit out there every morning with my coffee. I say prayers out there. I talk to my GC out there. I love it. It's calming. It's comforting.

DAY #45 SAFE PLACES - ROUND 2

My first thought when I read the title for today's lesson was - Feel safe? I don't feel unsafe. What is she talking about?! And then I remembered as I read for review and underlined in a different color ink what stuck out to me this time. For many lessons it is the same info that catches my mind's eye, but sometimes it is some new ideas.

Creating a safe place:

I have a favorite place in my living room where I sit every morning. I have a second spot in a "sitting" area on the upper level of our home also that I use in the evening sometimes.

Describe how your space is personalized:

Both of these areas are quitter - away from DH and the TV. Besides a chair, end table, and lamp I have my "things" gathered all around me - a pretty cup filled with colored pencils, piles of books to read, a pretty small box filled with accessories for decorating my journal pages, magazines, There is a window next to me so I can see some mother nature and/or the comings & goings of the neighborhood. My chair faces our beautiful dining room so I always have something nice to gaze at. I think the window is one of the most important elements. I have tried sitting in other spots/corners, but I like being by the window best. Sometimes I view this area as having too much clutter which I don't like, but I can't seem to ever get rid of it.

Spend 10 minutes in this area and write about it:

10 Minutes - LOL! I can spend hours in my area if I don't keep an eye on the clock. With my morning cup of coffee I head to my chair to get started with my day as I do my daily devotions, read emails, and visit SP, and any number of other reading things. The quiet time of reflection that I spend here every morning settles my mind and can bring balance to my plans for the day.

• Write a plan for creating a safe place.
the connotation of a 'safe place' makes me laugh inside. I don't like calling it that. I prefer a 'place to regroup or think.'
• Set up and personalize the area. Describe what’s in your safe place and how it looks.
It's my room, which I love, and my office, which right now is a catch all in disarray.
• Spend at least ten minutes in your safe place today. Write about what you did and how it felt.
My 10 minutes will be cleaning. :)

Any time you start a new job or move to a different home, don’t wait for months to “fix things up.” Take immediate steps to make yourself feel comfortable and emotionally safe, even in a brand-new setting.

Today

• Write a plan for creating a safe place.
• Set up and personalize the area. Describe what’s in your safe place and how it looks.
• Spend at least ten minutes in your safe place today. Write about what you did and how it felt.

I've lived in my present home for ten and a half years and still have boxes stored in the garage that haven't been unpacked. When we did the packing to move here, we had too many people helping and they just threw things into boxes and didn't sort anything or label the boxes. Hubby wants to just throw them away, but I've told him there are keepsakes and possible valuables mixed in them. His theory is, if I haven't used it in ten years, it's not valuable. I'm still missing some jewelry (diamond earrings) that ended up who knows where. This memory was triggered by the statement 'don't wait for months to 'fix things up'. Well, sadly, with some of the things I've waited years.

What does this have to do with creating a safe place? I'm not really sure other than I know there are things stored that I'd like to have out. We're in the hottest part of the year and I cannot go into the garage to work. Plus I've had tendonitis in both forearms and wrists. So for now, I'll 'make do' with what is available to me right now. My safe place is the bedroom where I can have my feet propped up on pillows and have a resting board to use my laptop across my tummy. I can look to my left and I have a watercolor seascape that my Mother painted many, many years ago. I also have an angel, a JOY sign that a friend gave me, a photograph of our dog Miss Jasmine with Sadie, a Dalmatian a neighbor had. Lastly, there is a necklace with a purple Pegasus to remind me of the Summer Challenge on Spark People. It's a comfortable area and I like it. It's personalized and safe.

I'm sitting here now and it's taken over ten minutes to write this. I feel good about it. I also did my nutritional planning for the remainder of the day and that's a satisfying feeling.

Joy is a Choice. Choose joy moment by moment.

When all else fails, persistence prevails.

Injoy:) Carolyn

Day #45 Safe Places

I have frequently struggled with the idea of a Safe Place. Many times I feel I need a Safe Place when I'm out in public in a social setting/event with other people. Although I love to do fun things with friends I seem to easily lose my focus on staying healthy as I feel the stress of the event/place building in me. It is too noisy. I have sat too long. I don't have anything to say or I don't feel like I am part of the conversation. There are way too many food and drink temptations. I need an escape and there is no where I can run to. And let me just say that the bathroom is not that enjoyable of a Safe Place to feed you emotionally!

As I sit in my kitchen getting caught up on our lessons, it is quiet, DH is gone for the day, there is a nice breeze coming in through the windows. This setting seems to be bringing my some comfort. So I think I can surmise that where ever my Safe Place is it needs to be somewhere quiet.

I have not had good/healthy eating experiences since this past Monday and I am not feeling especially good this morning either physically or emotionally. My emotional bucket seems rather empty even though Tuesday was a very fun day. I have been struggling with "getting on with life and living it" rather than spending so much of my time on this computer! I am struggling with finding that balance.

Today my SAFE PLACE is going to be IN MY HEAD. I am going to get moving, to do something, that first thing, one thing at a time no matter what it is, what ever comes to my mind next. I need to JUST GET MOVING!

Day 45 my safe place
I pretty much agree with Maria. Maybe it is that we have changed.
Lots of places in our house make me smile, I do have my favorite spaces that are just mine.

I’m happy walking around our farm but still not comfortable walking alone when out. Maybe I’m still worried about passing out because there has never really been a reason for the episodes in my past.
After reading this lesson I decided to go to a restaurant and have lunch alone. I will say it was not comfortable at all.
**Today I spent time in meditation and reading in my favorite Hygge spot!

From numerous repeats of Spangle's 100 Days lesson of "emotional safety", years of yoga, along with daily Bible devotionals my idea of a safe place has changed. It's just about anywhere now in my house as long as I take a few slow, deep breaths and just mentally relax. A cup of coffee, music of any kind, a cozy pillow and solitude really enhances my enjoyment and feelings of safety. It can also be outside of my house. It might also just be me fitting into my skin better with age.

In March we moved from a large house to a condo which I love. At my house my safe place was my back porch....I had a landscaped garden, planted flowers and listening to nature was therapy. As soon as I could I planted flowers on our patio here and made it my safe place. We have bunnies, squirrels, birds and a beautiful sky.

I love the outdoors.........Mother Nature is my therapist! emoticon

my goodness - you mean, like, there is a risk of people just reaching into you/your car while you're sitting there?!?! Jeez - I don't know I'm born, do I? How scary! How stressful! I am glad you can get that quiet lunch break, Susan, and hope you get to the park more often than the parking lot!

I have recently moved house and done all this stuff. The things I found I set up first, as a priority, were my bed, and the kettle/drink-making area. So, a cup of tea and a place to sleep - those were my base-line 'safe places'

Having access to the internet and logging onto Spark is a 'safe place.

I recognise this lesson from 100 Days of Weight Loss, where we set up a comfortable, safe place to just sit in when we need that respite. I have a lovely squashy sofa now, and my whole flat feels like a safe place. I love my new home. I don't share it with anyone, so everything in it is mine and reflects my choices.

When my neighbour (just the upstairs one) is challenging, in the night, my bed is still my safe place.

I went back and looked at Day 76 of 100 DWL - and was surprised to see how my safe places had changed. I'm living in a different place, and no longer have a long journey to/from work. I can get home very easily and quickly now.

At the moment my safe space is in my car.

If I eat lunch at work I will be interrupted constantly. If I close my office door for a conference call, people knock. If I put my phone on do not disturb they email to say "since your phone is on do not disturb...." So for lunch, which I usually bring from home, I drive to a local park, or sometimes just to the parking lot of a large store, open the windows a bit (cannot open fully as the area I work is high crime) take off my shoes and seatbelt, and eat in silence.

That wonderful silence is priceless in a crazy, hectic world.
