100 More DWL - Day 48 Stress is not lif

• Identify one area in life that tempts you to eat in response to stress.
• Describe how you will cope with this this area differently due to your “broken leg.”
• Record ways your new plan helped you manage your stress without eating.

• Identify one area in life that tempts you to eat in response to stress.

Deadlines stress me. Tax deadlines, getting things done before leaving on vacation deadlines and having all the vacation logistics organized, tidying my home before hosting family and friends, Paperwork stresses me because I don't like doing it so I procrastinate and then it becomes urgent to get done in time.

• Describe how you will cope with this this area differently due to your “broken leg.”

I need to be more clinical about making and following a plan.
I should suck it up that there will be necessary things that I don't enjoy doing and just do them instead of procrastinating.

• Record ways your new plan helped you manage your stress without eating.

If I have a plan, instead of going madly in all directions at the last minute, I can calmly follow it and meet my deadlines with a margin of time to spare. Haha, sounds logical, but I haven't been able to actually do that yet.

Gill I totally agree with you, even more in North America it seems, food that is not nutrition, but appeals to our sweet tooth or savoury appetites are being marketed for profit and is compromising our health.

I get so mad that the food producers (the ones who are in it for the profit, not the pride of producing top-quality nutrition) use our 'mental health' weaknesses to entice us to eat things that can hook us into a cycle of addiction - and make us overweight as a knock-on effect.

DAY #48 STRESS IS NOT LIFE - ROUND 2

I wonder if we are all so far behind in our lessons that we just haven't gotten to this one yet or are we all feeling so stressed right now that we just can't face the stress of another demand on our lives. That is the case for me.

I really didn't care for Linda's lesson today. IMHO the Broken Leg approach applies to the stresses caused by a schedule that is too full. You can't get everything done. You need to prioritize and/or perhaps delegate "to make changes or eliminate responsibilities".

IDENTIFY ONE AREA IN LIFE THAT TEMPTS YOU TO EAT IN REPONSE TO STRESS:

But there are a lot of other stresses in life besides a "plate that is too full". We have been dealing with a nightmare of getting out half-bath floor tiled since 4/8. Over a month! ! ! And the story actually started weeks before that; 4/8 was just the start date, or so we thought. This project has put more stress in our lives than we can deal with. It has been unbelievable. Even my DH, who is usually very laid back, is stressed out.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL COPE WITH THIS AREA DIFFERENTLY DUE TO YOUR "BROKEN LEG":

And, yes, we have turned to food for relief. The weather has been so lousy here that we haven't even been able to turn to some of the stress-relief activities we usually use. I am so stressed that I even let my SP Log In and Fitness streaks lapse! So how do we cope with our Broken Leg? That is the problem. We don't have a broken leg! We can't "make changes or eliminate responsibilities" because the situation is completely out of our control. We are victim and hostage to someone else's services.

This is only one example for us. We had several projects slotted to be done this spring and each and every one of them has been difficult and stressful so far. It almost makes us afraid to even think about facing any more projects.

I think this lesson has been completely lost on me because in my mind STRESS IS LIFE !

Day 48 Stress is not life

Think about what would happen if you broke your leg. Imagine all the places you’d suddenly have to make changes or eliminate responsibilities. Now pick out a few of those demands and, using the broken leg approach, decide which activities are critical to keep and which ones you can let go.

Today

• Identify one area in life that tempts you to eat in response to stress.
I don't feel stressed most of the time. Okay on Wednesday this week perhaps I was eating any chocolate I could find as I was due to be taking my Mum In Law to the hospital appointment but I think that may have been an excuse sadly.

• Describe how you will cope with this this area differently due to your “broken leg.” Nearly two years ago I was in hospital for 5 days after my first Multiple Sclerosis episode and the only thing that affected the household was the 'worry' what was wrong with me and if I was coming home. Now clearly I have to look after my Mum in Law and am enjoying that job, the stress is avoiding her cakes! I do try to get my children/young people more involved so that I have less to worry about and to do.

• Record ways your new plan helped you manage your stress without eating.
I expect today to be able to avoid the cakes and sweet things and some of the jobs I had planned for today can be easily moved to a different day and I can get my son involved tomorrow and my hubby involved later or tmrw afternoon. emoticon

Keeping my house clean. I always feel great after I’ve cleaned my house. But when there is a lot of cleaning to do, it stresses me out.

• Describe how you will cope with this area differently due to your “broken leg.”
Hire a house cleaning service to do the cleaning for me. Give more thought to simplifying my life and decluttering my house.

• Record ways your new plan helped you manage your stress without eating.
Thinking about this already makes me feel better. I’m getting closer to making the decision to have someone come in and do my cleaning for me. Up to this point in time, I’ve always had the attitude “I can do it all!”

Identify one area in life that tempts you to eat in response to stress.
Worries about family issues especially at night when I am overtired or disappointed.

Describe how you will cope with this this area differently due to your “broken leg.”

Most important is that I recognize what's happening. If I am on top of my game my "crutch" is to go into yoga mode by relaxing and taking deep breaths, putting up a "no fishing sign"(Corrie ten Boom), focusing on scriptures or positive affirmations (this too shall pass, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, Serenity Prayer).

Beyond that, resisting temptation by finding something non caloric to take my mind off of what's stressing me like reading, SP, hot bath, sending up a quick prayer and counting and focusing on the many blessings that I do have in my life.

Record ways your new plan helped you manage your stress without eating.
The more I am able do this the more successful I am with weight loss/maintenance.

Day #48 Stress Is Not Life

Over the past 2 years I have worked very hard on this topic. It has taken a lot of journaling to figure out why I was feeling so Stressed (unhappy) and what I needed to do to get happy! I have eliminated many things that caused me to feel stressed in my life. This has been hard to come to terms with. I seem to be a People Pleaser of sorts. I do not do well at saying "NO". I also don't want to miss out on any potential fun! And, last, but not least, I frequently felt unloved.

I have a tendency to forget my life goal of BALANCE at times and I start to cram my schedule with too many activities. Just a couple weeks ago I started to take a closer look at my schedule. On Sundays I sit down and write each day of the week out and what I have scheduled for myself this in not a "must do" kind of thing. This coming week for example:

M - clear
T - evening Fashion Show w/ friends
W - day trip w/ DH
Th - clear
F - clear
S - clear

This coming week looks pretty easy to me right now so I just scheduled a walk with a friend for Thursday. I also need to get a day of gardening in at my DD's house. emoticon Oh, there, see, I did it to myself again - "need to get a day of gardening in at DD's". NO I DON"T NEED TO DO THAT. My leg is broken!

Those are great plans to ease that situation - old habits did hard - but they can change!

I have already eliminated a lot of stress from my life - it's taken me 40+ yrs!!!!! I now go into work and do my job, and don't try to do everyone else's job as well. I am strict about going home on time and walking away.

I have established secure housing which was a massive source of stress.

My current stressor is an anti-social upstairs neighbour who is up all night. I have decided to complain along official channels, but not to let it stress me out.

Last night I did 40 mins bedtime yoga, than sat knitting for an hour listening to a lovely relaxation track on YouTube. This really helped.

Day #48 Stress is not life

One area of daily stress is dinner, my husband likes to eat late which means I’m cooking and cleaning up when I’m ready for rest and bed.
Broken leg .... on busy days
I will suggest he not snack late in the day
I will cook early, dinner will be reheated
I will use the crockpot more often (crockpot liners are helpful for clean up)
I will use homemade soup from the freezer more often
emoticon We will see how it goes with hubby, many complaints and I may need to remind him that he does know how to cook very well!
