DAY # 56 I'M SO BORED!

I do feel bored at times, but understand it is not because I don't have enough to do! Sometimes I get bored with that "To Do" list itself. Cleaning and cooking, for example, are never ending chores. So it really struck me when I read, again, Linda's lesson:

In reality, you aren't really bored. Instead, you are seeking things that will add meaning and connection to your life. You'd love to enjoy a deeper level of excitement, newness, or personal growth.

I thought I was just going to grab my list from our last reviews, but apparently I never made the required list! Here it is now:

1. Scan a cookbook or recipe for a new recipe to make
2. Work on my multitude of scrapbooking projects
3. Go for a walk
4. Call a friend
5. Watch a movie or TV show that interests me (not DH)
6. Change you activity - if standing and moving, sit, and if sitting too long, get up and move
7. Read
8. Garden
9. Scan FB - they have an area for "events happening near you"

I feel like the list could go on and on. Sometimes I just need a little push to pick on of these things and do it. And, of course, our situation is definitely different at the moment with so many things closed and being away from my home.

The final thought from Linda that I really liked was something I need to pay closer attention to:

"Any time you are feeling bored, take a few minutes to determine what's prompting your thoughts. Then use solutions that match your specific needs instead of eating."

Day 56 - I'm so bored

I am never bored. I have an abundance of choices. I live on a dairy farm, there is always work to do. I live in a family, there is always things to do on the domestic front. I put time and effort into useful community causes. And I am so glad for the mindset of Linda who challenges us to "Create a challenge list to use next time you feel bored. Include things that will give you meaning or deepen your knowledge and skills." From this team, I learned to make a list of go-to activities for when I feel like using food for comfort, and seeking comfort in doing something useful instead. Using food for comfort makes me feel good for a short while and bad for the long while. Doing something useful makes me feel good for a short while AND good for the long while.

depends how much time I have
Last round I realized I didn't have a short time period distraction list, so I made some up between last round and this one

- list of house work chores that range from 10 minutes to an hour
- list of gardening and farm yard chores that range from 10 minutes to an hour

last round's list
- a hike
- a cardio workout - cycle, swim, run - can't run(injury) or swim (pool closed) right now
- a computer card game - this can be dangerous in terms of time consumed
- time to myself
- something new that I can use like outdoors gear
- a night at the movies with DH
- dinner out with DH

I noticed I don't have any knowledge and skills development on my list. I love reading and learning. I can't do everything, I can dedicate a season to this, winter season is the best and it has just passed, I am going to spend spring season trying to bring my procrastinating issues in line. Then I can spend some time in summer for knowledge and skills development as a reward. That's it, I now have a plan.

I am happy to say, my pessimistic, unhappy, cynical mindset of the last few months is lifting. I was floundering on two fronts, my nutrition and direction towards goal weight and my inability to move forward and deal with some issues that need to be dealt with. I attribute the Beck trek I am on for helping. We just finished the first week of adhering to an eating plan after spending 2 weeks of preparing to diet, preparing by getting mentally ready - reviewing the advantages of eating mindfully, organizing our environment, making a diet and exercise plan, setting achievable goals, and a few more, it would be long to list them all. Anyway, it has helped me eat better, so one of my floundering fronts is now thriving again. That feels good. And I think it will soon lead me into straightening up my other floundering front. This 100 day journey offers meditation and support for living the life I want to live, making healthy choices, doing useful work, sharing with others. I feel best when I live healthy, work hard and give back.

Today I made banana muffins for breakfast: banana, 1 oz oats, 1 egg, 2 oz. milk, .5 oz nuts with a little baking soda and baking powder cook 25 min at 350. From Bright Line Eating no sugar, no flour
Later I am getting paper work out of the way, mopping floors, and playing my harp.
Already spent time reading my Bible and journaling.
This is my first day staying home from work.
Have a great day!

I don't get bored - or at least I don't term my feelings as 'bored' - more like frustrated, stressed, upset. That's what today's world offers - frustration, stress, upset and a host of more. It's distressing to say the least to be under a 'stay home' order. Here in Illinois that's what we're under.

I'm trying to focus on goals - drinking more water since we aren't in the hot weather yet. I tend to get lax during this time. I'm getting in more short walks with the dog. She's thrilled! I do more stretches, which makes my back feel so good and gives me more strength and less pain. I'm continuing to journal, which relieves stress for me.

Day 56 - I'm so bored

I can't remember EVER being bored. Overwhelmed, yes, which is when I eat mindlessly. I create a "To do" list, which I title "Next Actions" list each week. I never get all of it done. I include things that need doing, and things that work on my goals. So, in light of that, I'm going to skip answering the questions.

Day 56: I'm so bored
At the moment I thought this lesson isnt for me today because I am so busy and so frustrated. But then I remembered yesterday as I waited for our son to arrive to hang window binds in the new place. Sometimes waiting gives me the same feelings as being bored, and the same outcome. Three snacks were devoured in that time!

There are so many crafts I love packed away, the lack of spouse support and the wait for things to be done is causing great frustration for me.
Getting back home to a husband who was not much help all day but still wondered what was for supper didnt help either.

Today I will cry (already done)
I will meditate to calm myself down
And I will pray for patience as I face another difficult week.
And I will pray for all you wonderful people who give me a safe place to be with my feelings.

This lesson is spot-on for me today.......... I wouldn't say I'm 'bored' but the effect is the same; really I'm feeling kind of stunned and confused, and totally wiped out energy-wise, by the challenges of the pandemic. The result is that, once I get home from work, I do nothing much at all except wait to go to bed!

And it's quite obvious that the thing that has fallen apart is my planning!

Menu planning - usually I have at least 2-3 days of meals planned, if not a week. At the moment, I'm staring at the page and wondering what to eat!

Bullet journal - for quite some time now I've been keeping a bullet journal (BUJO) where I have the list of things to do for the day set out every evening............. now it's become a scrappy notebook!

Budgeting - never been a really strong point, but I do keep a budget........... this month I've been popping in to buy a few extra groceries more often, and I had a text to say my account is overdrawn!

Chanting - I have a daily practice of chanting (Buddhist) morning and evening - and that has become scrappy and inconsistent!

I have loads of things that interest me: playing my recorder, learning Cornish language, sewing, knitting, puzzles, craftwork, yoga, running, exercise even - everything has been just paused and disordered.

So, I think doing one thing, will be making a cotton face mask that fits me. That's my one thing. I'll post an update, with a photo, when I've completed it.

And I'm going to rule up my BUJO and include in my daily list: recorder, Cornish, chanting, yoga, exercise, knitting, sewing, craftwork. I think my exercise has to be indoors - I have a walking DVD that I like, and some great fun dance workouts on the internet.

Will I make that banana cake - or shall I just freeze the bananas and make banana 'ice cream'? Yes, that's a better idea. I could even put chocolate protein powder in it!

I don't feel bored, I love my life, I have more chores and fun things in my life than I have time for. My biggest challenge is time management, not boredom.

Do at least one of the things on your list today.

Record how that worked and whether it helped you avoid food temptations.

For sure when I am busy and engaged, I don't think about food. During the week, I have very busy mornings and my intermittent fasting plan, not breaking my fast until 11 am, is no problem, I don't think about food and I am not hungry. However Saturday morning is more leisurely and less routine and Saturday I do think about food temptations until the clock finally reaches 11. I don't want to build too much routine into Saturday, it is only one day out of 7 and it is good for my character to practice some eating resistance

DAY #56 I'M SO BORED - ROUND 2

Like Virginia mentioned I have PLENTY of things on my "To Do" List, but the thought that came to me as I read this lesson was that I don't always want to do my "To Do" list since it is chores, chores, and more chores. My days are busy. I could be busy from sun rise to sun set if I chose to be. My days are fuller when I am doing something fun. When I'm facing that "To Do" list I seem to frequently run low on energy and motivation. This all makes me wonder if boredom is really my problem.

As Linda suggests I think I might be looking for a new relationship or to feel challenged. I might even be yearning for something that will add meaning and connection to my life. Or perhaps a deeper level of excitement, newness, or personal growth. So, you see, for me it really has nothing to do with just being busy.

CHALLENGE LIST: (Linda suggests we challenge ourselves each day to do small deeds of kindness or volunteer at something that will make a difference in someone's life). I have been considering doing something more at my church which has many ministries.

Otherwise, geez, this is a hard one! I think I will have to store this in the back of my head for a time when I'm bored and then note what ideas I come up with at that time.

Day 56 - Im so bored

Any time you are feeling bored, take a few minutes to determine whats prompting your thoughts. Then use solutions that match your specific needs instead of eating because you are bored.

Today

Create a challenge list to use next time you feel bored. Include things that will give you meaning or deepen your knowledge and skills.

I live a quiet but unboring life and I dont get easily bored since I have many different interests that keep me busy. I always have a long To Do list that is always waiting for me. Family, pets, gardening, birds & butterflies, photography, hobbies, and taking care of my home keep me so busy I dont have time to get bored.

Do at least one of the things on your list today.

Today, I shopped and bought more summer flowers and continued planting flowers in containers on my deck. I love combining different color combinations in planters. This labor of love brings me much happiness over the coming months.

Record how that worked and whether it helped you avoid food temptations.

Keeping busy always keeps me out of the kitchen and I dont think about food when Im focused on something else. It works great for me.

For fun....

This is probably the only lesson that I don't relate to very often. I'm rarely bored since I still work PT, my DD and GS and GD live with me. I help with my GD's trips to/from school and to/from dance. So I don't have a lot of time to be bored.

When I have time I read. I'm a book addict! I also journal and draw.

This statement reinforced many times through several SP studies helped me to resist snacking last night. I realized that my desire to eat was fueled by exhaustion and boredom. We are doing home renovations. emoticon emoticon

I was bored, too tired to start anything and it was too early to go to bed. I thought it through and asked DH to set up a boring, mindless computer game. It worked.

Sue, I can SO identify with "brain-dead TV"! I don't even turn it on except for once in awhile to watch the news.....usually even after days, I haven't missed a thing! At one time I was a TV addict but no more!

Also, it might not be bad to think about a new hobby or even to try something new that you aren't sure you would enjoy. Maybe you would only do it once but it would change up the routine. The thing about really starting new hobbies is that eventually you have to make a swap and give up a hobby......I'm not good at giving things up.

Day #56 I'm So Bored

Yes! That is exactly how I feel many times. Bored with the brain-dead TV. Bored with the conversation (or lack of it). Bored with the activity. I would say that I can get bored fairly easily. This happens more during the night then it does during the day. I have plenty on my "To Do" List, but after doing them or most of the day I need a break from what I refer to as "Tasking". I need some relaxation and enjoyment; a break from the mundane job of doing tasks. Some people would refer to this as Down Time.

During my Down Time is when the boredom can set in. There is nothing worth watching on TV. There is no meaningful conversation going on in my life. Or some times my many activities (I'm a very crafty person) aren't sounding appealing to me at the time - "No. I don't feel like reading right now" or "No. I don't feel like hauling out all of my knitting stuff". Linda suggests "I might be seeking things that will add meaning and connection to my life".

She hit it right on the head for me when she said "Even when you have lots to do and you have plenty of friends or people to relate to, you might still feel empty and unfulfilled. You might be needing a deeper level of excitement, newness, or personal growth". Some times I need a challenge!

She suggests developing new skills in an area that interests you. I will need to give this some more thought because right now my brain is asking me "Do you really need to start a new hobby?"

I seldom feel bored but I remember boredom when I was younger and felt like something had to be happening every minute! Eventually I learned that there were things that could take my mind off food, a good book, a project that kept my hands and mind busy, time with friends, etc. Unfortunately I also learned somewhere along the line that food...not the planning, not the prep, not necessarily healthy food...I'm talking about food going into my mouth...kept me from being bored, passed time, helped me to procrastinate tasks that were boring. I ate my boredom!

No more! Time, hard work, and SparkPeople have healed that place in my life. This team is a huge part of healing my urge to eat my emotions and boredom IS an emotion.

Day #56 Im so bored
Even with a house full of company I found myself suddenly alone while the kids all went swimming. I walked around trying to decide what to do with myself.
Solution: went to my Hygge spot, put the i-pad on the meditation lesson of the day.
Outcome: instant nap.

Boredom rarely visits me.

My daughter and her 2 children live with. GS is 25 and GD is 12 - quite a range there; huh? It's called 'surprise.' I still work PT. We have a dog, a cat and a tortoise. So there's rarely time for me to be bored. I can easily fill any downtime with a book.

I'm clapping my hands!! It's so rare that an issue comes up and I say - oh my goodness, I don't experience that one.

For me its being too stretched. Too busy. Running from one appointment to another (tomorrow 3)
I dont like being alone with myself and my thoughts and I avoid being bored

I guess I can say that I am never bored. My dogs are here to fill any empty spaces. I enjoy looking on Pinterest for recipes. I love to sit on the patio and watch and listen to nature. Yes there are things on my TODO list too. My problem is that I love food, so even when Im busy doing something....Im thinking about that. emoticon

Gil I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. Anytime I tie on my favorite apron it brings back memories of Mom baking in the kitchen, so that is special all it itself.

Boredom

As busy as my life is, doesn't happen very often. For when it does, I can set the kitchen timer for 15 minutes and work on removing clutter from somewhere. Once the timer goes off, I am usually immersed in the project and will continue on for a half hour more.

The feeling of satisfaction I get at the end is well worth it.

Right now my list of things to unclutter includes my makeup drawer, the undersink cabinet in the bathroom, bedroom closet and dressers in a few weeks when we begin to transition from warm weather to cooler weather clothing.

I can walk around a thrift store or one of the larger stores in the area.

At lunch sometimes I use a bit of the time to clean/organize my car. I keep a container of wipes in the backseat which double as a way to wipe off the interior. Friday I stopped and vacuumed the carpets.

Boredom.

I think, yes, food is one of the things I do use to create a bit of drama and excitement sometimes - or have something to do.

I already have a whole list of things I do - knitting, reading, listening to music, walking, doing a puzzle, cleaning, reading inspirational things on Spark People, doing something from my TODO list!

That 'connection with people' is important too - I've recently embarked on a new voluntary position helping the treasurer in a local independent library. Sometimes just going out for a walk meets that need for connection. Or emailing/texting a friend. Yes, looking for meaning and connection is important.

Linda makes some good suggestions here. I have revived knitting and am just knitting 6" squares to make a blanket - this means it is a relaxing, easy thing to do and I often find myself wanting to just sit and do a few rows. It's nice.

I also have things I am learning - Cornish language is my main thing and there's always work to be done there, including podcasts to listen to, YouTube TV shows to watch, exercises to practise.

Yesterday evening I surprised myself by being totally absorbed in cooking! I cook most of my own food every day - but am usually very functional about it - I plan, shop, prepare, eat and don't spend much time on it. But after a day at work yesterday, and knowing I would be at work from 8.30am Sunday to 9.30am Monday - I knew I needed to be organised! So I spent my evening in the kitchen - put my apron on, had music playing, and actually got totally absorbed and really enjoyed it. The reason was that I allowed myself to be creative.

I sliced courgettes and put them in a kind of marinade for future salads.
I roasted a diced potato to make a cold patatas bravas mixture to have with my quinoa burger and salad for lunch at work. I enjoyed making the bravas sauce with local heritage tomatoes, ghee, smoked paprika, some date syrup, garlic, a bit of Cajun spice mix - oh it smelled delicious and made a thick, tasty, sauce.
I made a peanut butter and jam roll to have for breakfast, with a crips red apple.
I roasted coffee beans and set up a jar of cold-brew in the fridge.
I created a jar of overnight 'oats' with peaches, prunes, soya yog, buckwheat granola, chia, almonds - that's for Monday morning!
I packed a Sunday supper with vegan smoked cheese, crackers, olives and a Nak'd Bar.
I also constructed some vegan, gluten-free, chocolate muffins - no recipe; just my brains! I ate one with coffee, packed one for Sunday lunch, and froze the remaining three. Well done me!

I'm good to go - and there was a pile of washing up to do. But I had been totally immersed in it for a couple of hours, with my homely apron on, and perching on my kitchen stool with my cup of tea while things cooked.

Sorry for the long post - I was so excited to actually get that feeling of being totally absorbed in what I was doing!

Anyway, I'm off to work now - so for today, my 'bored' tool will by my current reading book (although I am considering taking my knitting with me too!)

Day 56 Im so bored

Any time you are feeling bored, take a few minutes to determine whats prompting your thoughts. Then use solutions that match your specific needs instead of eating because you are bored.

Today

Create a challenge list to use next time you feel bored. Include things that will give you meaning or deepen your knowledge and skills.
Do at least one of the things on your list today.
Record how that worked and whether it helped you avoid food temptations.
