Day 97 - Music therapy



Instead of reaching for food after a bad day, give yourself a musical escape. Immerse yourself in the sound, noticing the way it vibrates and is absorbed into your body. After five or ten minutes of music, you’ll feel amazingly healed and revived.

Today

• Create a list of your favorite music to have readily available for times you need it.
I already have many different playlists with favorite music for lots of different occasions. My favorite collection is music that makes me want to dance. When I hear those songs,, I can’t sit still - I have to get moving and dance. That music always makes me feel “alive”!!

• For at least ten minutes today, listen to music and focus on the beat.
Music is a big part of my day from the time I get up in the morning until evening and bed time...I listen while working in the kitchen, driving in the car, background music throughout the house, playlist music, etc. Every day I listen to way more than 10 minutes!

• Record how it affects your energy and your spirit.
Music totally transforms my spirit and lifts me up!

I agree with Phyliss about wanting quiet in places where the TV or radio is going on. I had a lot of waiting during my physical today. I was trying to read my magazine, but it was difficult with the 80's music in the background.

I've been going thru piles of paper in my guest room. Lots of concentration, so no music to go with it.

DAY #97 MUSIC THERAPY - ROUND 2

Yes. Music can make or break the mood. I have had music experiences my entire life. My mother frequently had the radio (and CDs when they came to be) playing and would whistle along with the tune; I took piano lessons for years; I love to dance even though I rarely do it these days; you will frequently find me tapping my foot to the beat of a song; we have recently been attending symphony concerts. I could go on and on with this list.

However, I basically still feel the same about music as I did in my last post:

"I enjoy music, but do I love it? Sometimes I think not because I rarely listen to it. Although I know of the benefits of music I seem to prefer silence more as it helps minimize the clutter in my head."

I can't imagine doing an exercise class without music or watching the TV for distraction while I am on the Elliptical at the Y. I have done yoga both to relaxing background music and in silence and either way is fine with me. I enjoy background music at a restaurant or in a store. In my home and in my car, however, I want silence. My DH seems to be one of those people who always needs some kind of background noise and it drives me crazy!

The need to get my music in order with a playlist is still on my "To Do" list, but it has been there for a few years now, waiting for me to get to it. Guess that truly shows that music isn't a top priority to me and not a weight-loss technique of choice.

Today I am listening to golden oldie country music today - Linda Ronstadt, Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, Conway Twitty, Kitty Wells, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins...

I find myself wanting quiet when I got home this evening.

But maybe I'll seek out some chill/relax music on YouTube and see what effect it has on me.

I've already gone a bit off-plan and had some snacky eating I hadn't intended to have. Two bags of spicy-flavoured crisps, some frozen grapes, then some Finn Crisps with almond butter on them.

I should have remembered to try the music first!

100 More DWL - Day 97 Music therapy
I have quite an assortment of favorite music CDs from:
Celtic, very calming
The Beach Boys, peps me up
Tribal winds, haunting flute music
And light Classical, just because I love it.

But truthfully there are lots of times that I just like the quiet with no sounds playing.
One of my pet peeves is that no matter where I go now there is something, mostly TVs, so it’s never quiet.
Restaurants, Doctors offices, and every waiting room in the hospital. This week it was a tiny room (4 chairs) as I waited for my car to be looked at. I finally asked if it could be muted since I was the only one there.

100 More DWL - Day 97 Music therapy

I love music and have started listening to it in a morning to 'revive' us all and start the day in a positive way. Yes its Rock music often for me but I am happy to allow my dd to chose her favourites too.

I love the music at my Aqua aerobics and Zumba class (especially this one it just gets me moving!), both are good for my spirit and moving my body!

I will tap my foot along with music when I hear it too and always have music in the background of my car.

I'm definitely a music and "beat" person, especially when it comes to exercise. I know that having the right music and appropriate beats per minute can make a workout much more effective. I have a hard time when the spinning instructor says something like "Don't pay attention to the beat of the music, get your RPMs up to x number". It just seems wrong somehow. emoticon I actually end up listening to music while I'm working out much more often than just for background pleasure. Interesting article I just googled:

Just on a side note -- sometimes music can drive me up the wall, too. My son was nice enough to drive me to Dallas (horrible traffic and confusing exits, etc.) for some elective surgery recently. Since he was being nice enough to drive, I didn't limit what he wanted to listen to...which was manic and discordant to my mood. I might actually have liked it for a workout. emoticon But, in addition, it was rainy and nasty conditions on the truck filled interstate. I closed my eyes, laid back in the seat and tried to practice deep breathing...alll the while thinking about how nice silence would be. Or DH sometimes likes to play music fairly loud -- loud enough that you can't really have a comfortable conversation while it's going on. And that's fine, but then he wants to talk over it -- and I find it a bit irritating. He says I don't like music -- but that's not true. I really do enjoy music of all kinds!

Day #97 Music Therapy

Music can actually alter your body's physical and emotional state in response to the beat of a song!

I enjoy music, but do I love it? Sometimes I think not because I rarely listen to it. Although I know of the benefits of music I seem to prefer silence more as it helps minimize the clutter in my head.

Instead of eliminating the clutter in my head maybe I should think about replacing it with music instead. I grew up in the 60s. My first song was from the Beatles. As a teen I had music blaring all of the time in my car. And who doesn't like the dance music of the 70s & 80s. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 6 and continued until I was 13 and my mother got tired of fighting with me to practice. As an adult I have refreshed my skill with lessons, but after a time gave up because it takes a lot of dedication to practice that I apparently didn't want to give. This year I talked my DH into trying a few nights at the Symphony. I am very excited about this. DH likes music, but has absolutely no concept of rhythm.

I used iTunes to store my music for years, but I no longer have an iPhone (I know you don't need one; it just works easier if you do) and the way we listen to music is changing in today's world. I have tried Pandora and Spotify, but they suck up my phone battery and data usage.

I have a music library of over 3000 songs and In recent months I have uploaded them to a storage app on my phone. However, I have not sat down and separated them into genre playlists yet and so it is strange to listen to Christmas music in the middle of July! I also have a Jawbone speaker that I need to learn how to use because it will have better sound quality than my phone does.

This will go on my "To Do" List for this winter.

Don’t you just love this team! Reading these messages actually had me smiling! emoticon

I love Meghan Trainor too.......and I also had people stare at me while singing in the car....sometimes I dance too! I have a little Shuffle with downloaded songs while I walk or jog. One song that I love is Happy by Pharrell Williams......love the words too!

Last night was an unusually warm evening here in Pennsylvania so we sat outside listening to Journey......my husband’s favorite group.

Many years ago we lived near a preacher, and you always knew when he was walking from the church to his home......you could here him whistling and it put a smile on your face!

I play classical music for my dogs when I leave the house, probably more for me than them. I really think music soothes the soul!

One of my passions is listening to many types of music and putting playlists together. I have fast mixes for water aerobics which helps the class to move faster and enjoy workouts a little more. With the softer, mellow music for yoga we relax and can get deeper into our practice.

I have other playlists for home. DH had classical music playing yesterday while we read and relaxed on our patio. It was very soothing and uplifting and added a lot to our relaxation.

Two different favorites.

My Dance Box Hits of the 80's is my favorite set of tunes to work out to, beats the boredom right out of the treadmill.

For mood lifting, Meghan Trainor's Title album, belted out at the top of my lungs as I sing along. I sing a lot of her songs when I go to karaoke. I sing in my car when driving alone. Sometimes I get funny looks from other drivers, I just turn my head towards them and give a smile and a thumbs up, then carry on with my happy tune.

I have an employee who likes to whistle obscure show tunes from the 20's, 30's and 40's. He gets a kick out of when I can guess what they are.

Music can definitely be a mood lifter for me.

Great links from Maribeth again! Thank you so much - that one about music for pain management was fascinating.

I am a habitual hummer! I think if I lived with someone it would probably drive them crazy, but during the day I often get positive comments about sounding happy, or people saying how nice it is to hear. So I am a music-maker!

I know I hum to sooth myself when I'm stressed at work. I know I spontaneously start humming when I am out walking - it just happens.

I love to use jango.com for my mood music - it has brilliant playlists and is more reliable to stream than You Tube which frequently causes my internet connection to fail.

I recently discovered country music - it has the beat, the melodies, and the lyrics that I find uplifting.

However, I will switch music playlists to suit my mood.

I can read music, and used to play the piano. Now I only have a recorder, but I could play it more often - I have got out of the habit. Today's lesson has made me think about getting some new recorder music.
