Thanks Ladies for your responses.

Jane, how delicious! I would love to go outside and pick a few guavas but the only fruit we have in season outside now is pine cones.

I can't say I've noticed them. I'll have to look for them the next time I'm at the store.

Thanks, Mzz. I had not realized how healthy guavas are. I have picked guavas here. Some are the size of golf balls and others the size of baseballs. I like them ripe because the not ripe ones make my mouth pucker. I will see about eating them more often.

I am a total fan of Guavas!
If you're lucky they're putting in an appearance at a grocery store near you, this time of year.
You may have to go to a latin super market to get them, but I found my first (most fragrant) batch as Walmart of all places.

They will run you anywhere from $1.49 -2.99 a pound and are worth every cent!

Guavas are a semi-tropical fruit, the ones we get here in Texas come mostly from Mexico.

There are a variety of different cultivars and colors.
I just finished a batch that was so delightfully fragrant that I wanted to carry one around in my bra ( I don't wear stuff with pockets), just so that I could smell it all day long.
After doing some research, I'm thinking this cultivar is prolly the Mexican Cream,as it was white inside, creamy in texture, smooth and yellow green the size of a key lime. Some with a few magenta dots on the skin. YUM!!!

Sadly my next batch, though resembling the first, was no where near as fragrant and had more seeds. But that's okay... they taste the same which is why I bought them in the first place.

I like to wait until the guava is creamy smooth ripe, but some people like to eat them hard (yuck). The varieties I had (small, white flesh) have a lot of very hard seeds, so when you chew them, you can't really bite all the way down or you may crack your teeth/dental work.

What do they taste like?
Heaven? You want specifics... not too sweet, just the right amount of citrus-y tartness. Something like a cross between a pear and a strawberry only they have the texture of a ripe banana. NOTE I said texture, not taste of banana.

Guavas are loaded with all sorts of nutrients and surprise are also good for thyroid...

Why not pick up a few if you see them at the market?
