Hi Tap~

I added some reading as well as made a correction as to the RDA of selenium which is 55 mcgs for adults.

Remember excess is also an issue when you supplement anything.
The first site I posted, gives you warning signs of excess, in addition to the brittle nails, hair loss and garlic breath I mentioned.

Be well!

Thank you. I must be getting sufficient selenium because my hair continues to be thick and my nails are strong.

Hey Tap!
Selenium content in foods varieties, but my thoughts are that it's the best way to get any nutrient whenever possible. Some vitamins and minerals are harder to get from foods, for example vitamin d or k2, so those would be best to supplement in non-food form.

Selenium has proved helpful in lowering anti TPO antibodies, in people who don't get enough selenium thru diet. In their case no more than 400 mgs of selenium can be taken for up to a month, after which the RDA should be followed which is 55 mcgs.

One of the symptoms of excess selenium ingestion is breath that smells of garlic. Others are problems with hair loss and nails.

I will come back and post a few articles about selenium here but right now I am limited as I am writing from my phone and my memory!

Be well!

Years ago I was advised to get selenium in my diet. But then I read a scary article. So I need to be brought up to date on the subject. I get it in my multi-vitamin. What are natural sources? And how much is too much?

Thanks for that info, MZZCHIEF!
I also eat a couple of Brazil nuts each morning alongside my meds. I'm a great fan of mushrooms, too.
I've got selenium on my Tracker. Nice option.

Welcome back Chibi!

Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium.
Stick to one a day, as too much can put one at risk for type 2 diabetes.

The soils in which wheat is grown here in the States is rich in selenium. Other food sources are seaweed, mushrooms, brewer's yeast, tuna. Selenium is a part of the enzyme that removes an iodine atom from T4, to make t3, which is why it's important to thyroid health.

Back @Spark, been running my nutrition report, and selenium caught my eye; had just seen this in some online thyroid forums - do y'all try to make sure you get this? Brazil nuts are PARTICULARLY high - 5 nuts will put one over the recommended daily amount, which is actually toxic. Was thinking about having 1 or 2 a day. Thoughts? Info?

Looking forward to make the Roaring 20's the best decade!! Making it happen!!! Motivation into momentum.
