We moved after hurricane Irma from Fla to NY. We have 2 chihuahuas weighing 3 and 8 lbs. The 3 lb would get chilly on a 70 degree f day in Fla so we've been careful. We were able to walk Lolli-the larger one-around for some time until the snow hit in Oct here. Then we had to be careful. We were also living temp in a motel until we found a home and closed on it so it was more adjustment for new work, walking times, weather, etc. We got our home closed just after Christmas (really tried for a month earlier but the seller had some issues that kept pushing the closing) so Dec they didn't go out hardly at all. Now we are in our home nearby a park and a lot of trails. We purchased a doggy stroller and have piles of blankets, coats and sweaters for the chis. Been bumpy getting 'em going though. Lolli would be full speed ahead with two layers of coats on but would skid to a halt at the door.

We've very recently been able to get Lolli used to walking when the snow is not so high (but cant get the shoes to stay on) while we pretty much just put some layers on Bella, stack blankets on her in the buggy and watch her little nose disappear under all of them the full 45 minute walk but she doesn't vibrate anymore and Lolli is good for the most part. Yesterday the wind picked up fast and snow hit us blinding and hard during our walk. we were still on the other side of town past the park but near the water so it was really hard on them. Hubby picked up Lolli and held her while I ran with the stroller as she was really shaking (something Lolli generally doesn't do easily). Trying again but for maybe different times.

Very, very sorry to hear about your loss AMYSUZEQ. You have my condolences and sympathies on the loss of your little man. Truly sorry. Best thoughts and regards.

My little doggie man passed away exactly 2 months ago today so I have been walking solo. I am really considering walking dogs at a animal rescue or shelter so it isn't so lonely.

I try to go at least 4 times a week on a 2.5 mile walk down our road, which is hilly & narrow, and in the country. I take my younger dog & my neighbor's youngest and we go. The challenge is when some of the other dogs are out & they are not on a leash, or the goats are bleating or trucks are zooming. When it's quiet it is quite enjoyable & we walk at a good clip so it's also good exercise for all of us. I'm having to start earlier in the morning as it's getting warmer now.

I try to take at least one dog every day.
Somedays we go around the local park, others down a section of the Aqua Fria. We also like to go hiking but only one can go at a time since I only have one good harness.

Amount of time it takes for a dog to "do its business" is directly proportional to outside temperature + suitability of owner's outerwear. ~Betsy Caņas Garmon

I have found this statement to be true.
All the hopping around trying to stay warm, only makes the dog wanna play.

The Wolf Credo:"Respect the elders. Teach the young. Cooperate with the pack. Play when you can. Hunt when you must. Rest in between. Share your affections. Voice your feelings. Leave your mark.

I love going running with my dog, and we also love doing frisbee at the park!! It is a pretty good work out for me running around with him and throwing that frisbee a million times really works on my arms. I like to switch back and forth haha

We have 4 dogs. We walk trails and around town. If I don't drive my dogs to another location. my cats follow. Therefore I just walk around our block then. I see someone who does trailwalking here too. I found a great solution for the ticks that get on them. My dogs are treated but when we go out on trails the tics are thick. Off has a natural bug lotion. I rub that on them and me. It works great. I also use the cutter spray lemon eucaylistus and the vanilla cutter. These are better than the ones with deet.
I want to be on the dog walking challange but haven't figured out how to post.

I have an American Bulldog/English Springer Spaniel mix with SUPER high energy. Besides his "dual citizenship", he can't decide whether he is a bulldog or a bird dog. So, I throw balls, animals, frisbees, as I walk around the yard - this is when he wants to be a bird dog.

When he wants to be a bulldog, I play "pull mommy's fat butt off the ground", which is just playing tug with him while I sit on the ground or floor. It does a great workout for your upper arms, as well as your abs if you let them pull you into a sitting position.

So who new this rescue pup was going to be my workout equipment!

I take my cats for a walk and play with them outside on the ward almost every day. I have to put them on a leash because of a near by neighbor that doesn't like cats...... but at least they go outside and have fun on the grass. I exercises with them at the same time.
I enjoy being with them....

Hi everyone! Two years ago my son bought a bloodhound puppy he named Gus. This changed our lives more than we new was possible. My husband, my son & I are now all members of our local Search & Rescue group. We have since acquired a second bloodhound, Bear and are currently training both to become certified search dogs. In addition, I also am training my Spaniel, Buddy for canine search and rescue. He himself was a shelter rescue 6 years ago! Goes to show what these animals can do when given a chance. Plus this adventure has been great for adding exercise to our lives in a fun and productive way. And as a final note, our dogs have spurred us to relocate to 10 acres in Southern Oregon so they have more room and a healthier environment, allowing us to adopt 2 addional rescue dogs. Total canine count to date: 6. We love it!

I do agility with Max. I have used the body fit media band, and found that I bunred 550 calories during a one hour class! He's a border collie so all the running around does wonders!

We also have lots of trails around and one of our favortie things to do is explore! Any Seattle area folks out there?

I'm new but I just saw your discussion. I live in Hickory, NC and my Scottie dog loves to hit park trails. We are a short drive to the mountains, so in addition to many local parks, there are a lot of trails off the parkway--pretty much everywhere if you explore. Also, many times the trails don't have much traffic so I can let him off the leash. He loves it!

Good local parks are South Mountain State Park, Baker's Mountain, Upper/Lower Creek Falls (off Hwy 181). This Highway has many trails for bike riding and hiking off of it, and is also popular among motorcyclists as it is very curvy.

I will be getting a one off workout looking after my axolotl soon as I am going to buy some sand for its tank and i have to scrub the sand extensively to make sure I get all the dust out of it before i put it in the tank. If I don't get rid of the dust from the sand then I will have merky water forever, so I have an incentive to do a good job. I am told it will take a couple of days of scrubbing the sand in water and sifting it through a sieve to make sure there are no rocks that my axolotl might swallow. ( as they eat anything that fits in their mouth).

Playing in the yard with a ball or frisbee. It's great for a great run for them, for us it would be enjoying a nice day and sunshine, which we all need some sun/ for the vitaminD. We would use our arms legs and feet alot.

Hi, I'm new. I have a Jack Russell mix, her name is Brandy, also a JackRussell name Joey. And I have a calico cat named Susie. Their my kids and the keep me "very busy". I love them very much. We have a acre so when we are out with them, it is enjoyable and fun for all of us. When the weather is nicer we go to paths for walks.

Whenever I workout my cats want to workout with me! No, not really, they're just in the way wanting attention. Lol I walk dogs as a little business on the side of being a Veterinary Technician. I also take them to the dog park, swimming, play ball, or just play around with them in the yard.

Way to go for volunteering at your local shelter! I would if mine was closer but it's about 45km away. I tried to when I was in the city but they had a waiting list!

A bit of track, as I have an axolotl, and three fish, none of which can be fitted with a lead and taken out of their tanks for walks, But this thread has me thinking .... that if I at least walk at the same time of day on a regular basis I will get to know local dogs ( i can not have a dog in a first floor one bedroom flat) that way I can interact with them to some degree. All the local dogs already have people to walk them, but it doesn't mean i cant join in by walking at the same time of day. I get the added bonus that I am not the one responsible for picking up after they do doos

I love walking dogs, but I don't own one. I used to walk my neighbor's Husky but they relocated. So now I go to the local Humane Society and I signed on as a dog-walker.

Walking shelter dogs is important because it gives the dogs a chance to burn off the pent-up energy from being caged. In turn, they show better to prospective owners. The jumping, racing, pacing is reduced and they have a better chance of being adopted. I get such a good feeling from trying to help out at the shelter.

The purpose of this forum is to generate ideas for more ways to exercise with animals. The animals could be your own, belong to someone else, a charity, etc.
