I just saw your note, @LINDAF49 - wow, no one has answered it? I truthfully can not see the details clearly on this pyramid graphic and I have no easy (ie not time-consuming) way for me to enlarge it here on my laptop so I can see it clearly.

Usually on these kinds of things, I've noticed they are talking about the standard "button" mushrooms like any American Grocery store would have in a little pint or quart size carton in the produce aisle. Some places they have them in a bin and you can pick out and put in a bag and weight the bag, getting the ones you want. Usually you want them to feel firm and clear skinned and dry and white or beige. If they look bruised or gummy or grey/dark mottled, it's probably best to skip over them.

For those, I just wash them gently in warmish water, make sure there's not any dirt or grit in the gills on the underside of the smooth top. I usually trim the very ends of the stem up to an area that isn't pithy.

Then... you can slice them various ways, depending on whether you need them to "look pretty" (like for a raw salad topping). or you can just rough chunk them into little bits and cubes, like for casseroles or soups where you will end up cooking or blending them later, or where it just doesn't matter.

There are websites that discuss other nuances of picking, preparing and cooking mushrooms, but I'd encourage you to start with that one. You can also find them in little tiny cans in the canned vegetable aisle - usually they are up high or down below, in the most inconvenient places for me (5'3") and those are pre-cooked and usually used in soups, or open a can and pour it out into a crockpot with your veggies or meats or other recipes.

There are other varieties like portabello, shiitake (spelled different ways usually no hyphen but SparkPeople's profanity robot thinks I am cussing here.)., etc that are much larger and have a different mix of nutritional benefits (mushrooms in general have natural forms of sodium so you usually don't need to add salt at all if you cook with mushrooms. Also they have many minerals - can't think of all the ones but I know selenium is one.). These two - portabello and shiitake (and I'm not certain I am spelling it right), will usually be found in specialty areas of a grocery store, or at an Asian market if your community has one. They are used in a lot of vegetarian cooking because they can be prepared on the stove and fried or sauteed or steamed, and even used as a "meat feel" in sandwiches etc.

I'm not sure whether to suggest trying some at a restaurant, because not knowing where you live or what is available, sure as I do, the restaurant might do something in their mushroom preparation that you wouldn't like it and not knowing enough about it, wouldn't be able to truly tell if it was the mushroom causing the problem or some other food in the mixture. Mushrooms are used frequently in Chinese and other Asian dishes, but also in French cooking and I've seen them used in Mexican food... used in cooked Roast Beef with veggies ... it may be truly world wide? I just don't know.

So anyway. I hope I didn't overwhelm you. But I love mushrooms, so yea, I'm a bit biased... and I'm more likely to eat them at a restaurant. I also have some dried ones at home in a bag - just pull them out and re-hydrate them in water and into a pot of soup. Works great!

I weighed in ysterday for the Oklahoma City Weight LossChallenge, so I have until 19 July to lose as much as I can. I know I need to watch anti-inflammatory foods, so wish me luck and go give me encouragement (if you have time) on my Page.

thanks emoticon

I'm thinking seriously about sending the link, to the people who are on the weigh in forum and not to the whole team, that way I won't disrupt their day with unnecessary spark mail.

Thanks for the input
Hugs
Linda

Hi Linda,

I don't need reminders as I automatically weigh myself several times a week but do not mind getting the reminders as it helps me remember to log in and post mt results.

Thanks,
Leanne emoticon

To the People on the TEAM who weigh in each week, does having a spark mail sent to you remind you to weigh in each week, or is it just mail you open because it was sent to you. I received a complaint from a person who does not weigh in, that is why I'm asking.

Tell me if you want the link to be mailed to you each week, thanks Linda

you can answer right here, thanks

Hi Linda- not sure about what affects weight lost surgery, but due to losing weight I can no longer wear my lower denture, at this time, so I have been running carrots, broccoli, onions, baby spinach, endive, celery through food processor, til it is like the consistency of a grated carrot.

I also do this with my nuts first, then put in a coffee grinder. I grind my flax seed, pumpkin seed there also.

I eat at least 5 cups (below food processing) every day, usually big salad with sardines at lunch and added to my beans another time during the day. I freely use most spices & herbs except salt & black pepper, I limit them and I use sea salt instead of regular salt (which has sugar in it)

If you need them to be like apple sauce consistency, what about making sauces by cooking and mashing like potatoes, but without extra ingredients like butter and milk. (have you thought about natural baby food, I have heard that people who has had this surgery.

Hope you can use some of these ideas.

Onward & Downward
Linda
