this week was difficult. i find that most of my sugar cravings come in the afternoon and evenings. Haven't been doing a great job of finding substitutes for when my cravings hit. Will be redoing week 2 and being a lot more mindful than I was last week.

Mid-way through week 2 for me. I am reducing sugar by trying to avoid the candy jar in the afternoon, I have stopped adding honey to my hot tea in the morning and I have switched out my whey protein in my breakfast smoothies to one that contains no sugar. So far I have been doing well in all areas except the afternoon candy jar.

You have the right idea about the coffee. emoticon Everybody has their triggers.

Sugar is so bad for our bodies. I try to paint a picture in my mind of what it does to us when I reach for it.

I find these challenges help me out and keep me motivated.

I crashed yesterday but was under a lot of stress. I got up this morning and read the Spark mail and that put me back on track.

Good luck on your journey

I hope this message is in the right place. I just started week 2 today. So far I have found I crave to eat sweets in the afternoon. I always end up grabbing something from the vending machine at work. My plan is to be more prepared. I will bring some kind of fruit for a mid-afternoon snack.

I also love to drink coffee in the morning, only one cup. But I usually put flavored syrup and milk or a flavored creamer in it. I believe it jumpstarts my cravings for the day. I will try to avoid coffee altogether and choose tea or water. If I find that I really miss the coffee or this leads to other bad habits, I will look for sugar-free ways to make my same coffee.

The one other time I crave sweets is at night after dinner. I have heard that brushing your teeth as soon as possible after eating will rid your craving. So that's what I'm going to try.

I'm glad I have a plan, but I'm a bit nervous! emoticon

Day 11. I'm pretty happy with myself :) have not found myself tempted to reach for my old cravings for a few days now at least. Didn't ride my kitchen of the cranberries and walnuts I struggled with for so long either. They are still there, I'm just done with them :)

Week 2

I did pretty well on week 1. I would read a few pages in different books I have, about sugar and how in affects our bodies. This helped me through some days when I needed a reminder.

My Niece is living with me now and we do not have sweets in our house normally. Last week she made fudge. I just had a taste.

I sure can understand why folks have trouble quitting smoking. Sugar really is a drug.
The ads on TV don't help. Always pushing us to buy junk food.

Eliza .... I feel I need something at bedtime or when watching tv too.

I track it early in the morning because I know i'll have it.

I always track either, 1/2-1 c. honey nut cheerios, or regular cheerios, snack size popcorn, or sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds. Something that I can graze on that takes a while to eat. I also concentrate on the bites to slow down. I'll pour out a little on the table and grab one at a time.

Just track early in the day and make room for it. It's much easier than fighting that compulsion and giving up and running for junk food before bedtime.

It keeps me happy, within my calories and my stomach full before I go to bed. If I don't eat right before I go to bed my stomach is rumbling and keeping me up .

If you don't love yourself....how can you expect others to.

My snacking is after supper, when I am sitting in bed, idling watching television and playing on the laptop. I seem to want crunchy things at this time. It is very hard for me to say no during this time because I am usually too wiped out to engage in another activity to keep my mind busy but not so tired that I can sleep yet. emoticon

The majority of my sugar intake begins in the afternoon. I plan on substituting some other foods for the ice cream, candy, etc. I am thinking of using metamucil cookies (high in fiber); carrots (crunchy), fruits and other substitutes which will give me the same feeling.

I've realized that the majority of my snacking if happening n the afternoon when my babies are sleeping. I usually find myself with some extra time on my hands. And eating something filled with sugar just seems to win. SO, I just need to keep myself busy. Maybe actually clean the house while they sleep. emoticon

So I just tried the protein pancake (non-dairy)recipe and were they delicious!
Used strawberry protein powder and topped them with natural peanut butter (no added sugar) and a small banana.
Shockingly, I think I like those more than regular pancakes with syrup. Great substitute.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by my results for week one. I wrote down everything that I ate without making any changes and what I discovered is that I eat far less sugar than I thought. That does not mean that I am comfortable with what I do eat , it means that I have more control than I was feeling like I had.
I am interested to see how this week goes, I am very interested in seeing where my "secret" sugar is in my diet.
Have a great week everyone!

Jackie,

I know it is easier said than done, but don't be so hard on yourself!
I struggle with that OFTEN! When I tell myself I failed, it really hinders me from seeing my success and what I DID do right.
And I think you are already onto your success!

1. You did the best you could with the time you had.
2. Now you know the importance of planning and preparing.
3. You got to enjoy a delicious European croissant and cappuccino in Italy [a moment in time some people, like me :), can only dream of]

You didn't fail, you succeeded!

emoticon

Best wishes :-)

I already failed this morning....I didn't know what to do. I had to go out early for bloodwork and could not eat beforehand. I was so hungry this morning and could not return home after the bloodwork to eat and I couldn't get to the grocery store for something healthy to eat. As I am in Italy, there are only bars here to eat and they only have croissants, at least in my town. So I had a croissant and cappuccino. It was so good but I am so disappointed because I wanted to eat well, but was not able to. That's why they say to prepare healthy, portable snacks. I just didn't have time to prepare this morning.

I'm in week 2 and have cut out some sugar already.....my weakness is chocolate. I LOVE CHOCOLATE. I also indulge in cookies and milk and I like ice cream a lot, but at least ice cream I can eat in moderation. I read about an idea of a dollar a day for me for every day that passes without eating sugar. I am going to do this to save for a pedometer to track my steps each day.....two goals in one!

Starting week 2 today. The hardest sugar item for me to kick will be ICE CREAM. I cut back on sugar in general last week, but now it is time to nail the huge reason for my sugar issue. How am I going to do this, I have not figured out, but I am determined to become sugar free, well close anyway.
Today and tomorrow my plan is to have a Skinny Cow treat. The reason for this is two fold.
1. I have two left (stupid I know, but I just do not want to throw them away)
2. It is hot here and I have plenty to do that will keep my hot. Then I will quit cold turkey.
After I am done with the ice cream I am thinking about making my own pops like with fresh fruit or even Crystal Light.
After some time of that I think that I will no longer crave ice cream 24 / 7.

Managed 23 days with no soft drinks! Drinking lots of natural fruit juices to curb my sugar cravings. At work have prunes and nuts to keep me going. I confess I have given in to chocolate but this little progress is my motivation😊

At the beginning of week 2 I have discovered that I can live without sugar in my coffee. I am still a coffee with cream and sugar person but have found that vanilla flavoured liquid stevia is not bad at all in my coffee. Now to just wean myself from the cream or maybe even the coffee...hmmm. not yet.

After week 1, I really found that refined sugar and artificial sweeteners are my triggers. It was near impossible to stay away from them for a few of the days, so the things that I'm going to be avoiding this week include:
- Sucralose/Splenda - I usually put this in my coffee in the morning. I've been slowly cutting out the caffeinated coffee and drinking more decaf so that when I quite, it won't give me 2 weeks of withdrawl headaches like the last time!
- Corn based products - high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, etc

However, I do tend to chew gum when I'm having the munchies, so I'm going to have to see about finding something without that junk!

So week one was interesting because I got to really pay attention to when I craved sugary things.

The 3 sources of sugar that I tend to reach for is:
1. post-dinner sweet-snacking
2. non-diet sodas (not often, but I enjoy them)

I honestly don't have a habit of certain sweet foods. I'll just randomly eat different sweets if I go out to eat or something like that.

Day 14: End of week 2. I think it went well. I did have some unplanned sugar, but not candy, cakes, pie, etc. I had waffles once for breakfast and after eating I thought about the syrup. It did not trigger cravings, but I was worried. I have been having fruit bars at night, but had a push up 2 nights, again I worried about triggering cravings, but it didn't seem to. Overall I had a great week! Ready for week 3.

Week two went okay. I learned more about the hidden sugars, especially in fruit juice and other foods such as granola bars. I also realized that even the "lite" pancake syrup I use for my waffles has lots of sugar. I have switched from regular waffles to whole grain, and found a sugar free syrup. I looked for the sugar free juice last night but did not find it in the frozen section. I prefer making my juice from concentrate, so will have to search a different store to see if I can find a healthier one. I will also be looking for a healthier version of ketchup since my son loves to use that as a condiment. Definately made me more aware of the amount of sugar in our foods.

Hello everyone, this was a good week challenge.
You are right Neecole. You need to watch it all.
Even BBQ Sauce has sugar in there. Not to mention Bread.
Which I love to eat Bread and Chocolate.
(Hence the reason I am trying to cut back here).
Started liking the Sugar Free Vanilla Ice Cream from Blue Bell.
I also like the Crasins from Ocean Spray. Hope that you are doing well.
Have a good evening and a great weekend!~ Holly emoticon

How has Week 2 been going?
Today is the first day of week 2 for me. Week 1 went fairly well though.

What did you learn about sugar this week?
That it's in just about everything and you really have to pay attention to what you're buying and eating!

Do you have any sugar "triggers"? If so, what?
Not any specific food really. More like just emotions, stress, and certain times of the day (8:30 PM is a rough one for me as far as sugar cravings go).

How do you plan to avoid your triggers?
Try to minimize stress, learn to deal with emotions properly and be aware of cravings for what they are and not give in.

Week 2 went well for me as I was down 6/10th pound at weigh in this morning. My cravings were nearly all gone and didn't get out of control. I did have some chocolate just a small amount 3 or 4 days. Most days I didn't even want any which is very unusual for me as I had been eating 1 or 2 fun size chocolate bars per day. So far this week I've not had any cravings. I do have fiber and or protein bars that I use.

I hear you on a rough 2nd week. I also am trying to blog. I did not learn as much this 2nd week as I already knew about the other names for sugar. Hoping week 3 teaches me something new again.

Well my week has gone rather poorly in that I did not live up to my goals. I do feel however that it is a success in the fact that I am still logging in and reading and trying to re-commit. Part of it is to stop thinking of myself in a "new" and "different" situation and accept that the changes that I have made in my life are permanent and part of my lifestyle change. I am going to re-run the week two challenge next week!

Well, I have successfully made it through Week 2 without soda, chocolate, or pastry. I avoided some other sugary sweets along the way as well! Surprisingly, I have a lot of energy despite having given up soda. We'll see how long that lasts once school starts up again though.

I overcame a major ice cream craving last night, and it feels great! I went to a friend's house for a girl night, and I had planned to be back at my apartment by 10pm to watch last night's episode of Newsroom. Well, I had never been to her house before, and much like my own, there is a dairy queen right down the street. We watched a movie, and the whole time I was thinking about it and how I wanted a Lemon Meringue Pie blizzard for the ride home. I ended up staying for a bit after the movie to have a nice chat. I knew my show was DVRing at home and that if I stuck around for just a little bit, the Dairy Queen would be closed by the time I left. That was true, and by the time I got back to my apartment, I was more interested in watching my show and going to bed than stopping by a store for ice cream. Woke up this morning feeling proud of myself!

Well this week has been better than last week. At least I know for sure what my triggers are, mostly boredom and stress. I definitely need to plan a treat each week otherwise I'll go off the deep end, but it can't be ice cream just yet!

I like to keep a package of mini chocolate fudge cupcakes in the freezer. When I want something chocolate I allow myself 1 of the cupcakes frozen. The frosting tastes like fudge and that satisfies my sweet tooth without going overboard. I put it in my tracker and allow for it.

Susan - I think that unplanned eating is definitely a trigger that belongs here! I sometimes can't pinpoint a specific craving that I have, but I know that when I have a craving of any kind, I tend to fulfill it and overdo it. Unplanned eating, indeed!

I'm halfway through week 2 and I've successfully avoided my triggers! Have I eliminated sugar and desserts from my diet altogether? No. I had frozen yogurt last night and had a couple bites of key lime pie the other day (I know that this could count as pastry, but there wasn't much crust, so it was more of a pudding). More importantly, I made sure that I had enough room in my nutrition intake for these things, so I did not go above my calories or carbs for those days.

I was very proud of myself at the frozen yogurt place last night. Usually, I load my yogurt with candies and top it with hot fudge, but I refrained last night! Instead, I enjoyed some fat free cheesecake flavored yogurt topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and a little bit of graham cracker. It was refreshing and delicious, and I felt full at the end.

I have also now in my 8th day without a soda! Woohoo!!!

The important thing to remember is that we are not attempting to cut sugar (or other bad foods) out of our eating altogether. I constantly read articles on this website about how that leads to yo-yo dieting. One little step at a time to substitute our cravings with healthier alternatives is all it takes to make lasting changes. I hope everyone else is finding success!
