I try to always have fresh fruit on hand now. I am also trying fruits that I have never had. I don't keep sweets in the house any more!

You may try chocolate nibs. A more intense flavor and small morsels.

Tried some graham crackers dipped them in low calories chocolate to take the place of candy bars. I found a granola recipe on here to try. It took that need for sweet and crunch away.

emoticon All ... I like carob chips for chocolate binges. Stevia, or Walmart brand sweetner (blue or yellow pkgs). On occasion, I enjoy no bake cookies, but I haven't tried them with a sugar alternative though. I like fresh fruit salads as well.

I haven't thought about fig bars in forever. I always fond them to be too sweet and that by itself is a built-in proportion control for me. Thanks for the reminder.

I make my own trail mix and add yogurt covered raisins for the sweet fix...
Kind bars have little sugar and I like Fig bars...also, I've been introduced to figs...they fix that sweet tooth!

Roly, I keep fudge-cycles in the freezer for my chocolate fix.

I also keep Organic Cacao Powder around, 0g of sugar! I will sprinkle on oatmeal, mix in yogurt, coffee etc. It is not a big chocolate fix. Good to have around.

Does anyone have any tips for chocolate alternatives that are quick and easy and have a long shelf life? I have tried shopping for fruit and only buying what I need but then I will have a few days where I am not hungry between meals/not craving sugar and so it goes off. I'd like something with a shelf life that will last a few weeks in the pantry and be healthy (currently using dried sultanas and mixed nuts but want more variety). If it could help boost my veggie intake it would be a bonus!

Also with my current work (40 hour week plus 9 hour commute per week plus dance/band lessons) I'm not home a lot to do a lot of food prep, hence why chocolate has been so convenient and a good pick-me-up!

I make sure to have a good supply of fruit and try not to eat too much of that. It's a good thing that I do most of the cooking and from scratch. I just have to make sure that I don't do any baking for awhile. I was amazed at what I didn't know about sugar from a quiz that I just took.

I have two huge triggers that I am aware of. 1. Donuts. It became habit to stop at Dunkin on the way to grocery shopping on Friday mornings. It's right across the street from the grocery store. It was easy, quick, tasty, and cheap, but it cost me in weight gain. I found this to be true years ago when I was working upstairs over a donut shop and someone went every day to get a load of donuts for the office. I eventually gained 10 pounds from it in a short time. I had to convince myself that I hated donuts. The power of the mind is incredible. I managed to not eat donuts for years because I hated them. To bad I dropped my idea of hating them. So, back to hating them. In my case, I have to as sugar melts my veins and can up my risk of diabetes.

The other is McDonalds French fries. The picture on the side of a truck drives me crazy for them. I can't go to McDonalds. I have to have a mind view of a big pile of poison for me.

Cookies are the third trigger. My husband and I are cookie monsters. We can't buy them because we won't just stop and 1 or 2 or 3. We don't stop until the bag is gone.

I have to eat more veggies than fruit in place of sugar. I need more veggies anyway so that is going to be my alternative. I've also found that when I stay away from sugar, I have to really be determined for the first 2 - 3 weeks because the craving is so bad. Once I get past that, things settle down and it's a learning time for me to eat more healthy. You would think that after this long, I would know how to eat healthy, but I seem to have never grown up in the eating department and I always revert back to the old ways of McDonalds or Dunkin and food I know I should not eat.

Good luck all.

Keep in mind fruits have sugar in them, especially dried fruits, so moderation is key!

Upbeat music is a good suggestion. I have been trying to listen to music more often but for some reason my active listening has become less frequent as I got older. But I do feel so good when I listen to good upbeat music. Thanks for suggestion. emoticon

I know being house bound or winter-depressed can be a bummer. These last couple of days here in central Texas have been really messy and cold. When I begin to crave something "evil" I have been listening to my upbeat music and moving a lot. That's the only thing that has helped.
Lots of folks check in to these message boards so I'd just keep posting! And check out the articles and videos menus!

"Cuties" are my salvation...They are the mandarin oranges. Extremely sweet and delicious after a meal. I do pretty good using them as a dessert. My addiction kicks in really strong around 2-3 in the afternoon and by 4 I'm goofy!

emoticon Try naturally sweet veggies like sweet potatoes and acorn squash. Try with a sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. Both blend well cubed and baked with apple juice and cubed apples. You can add a small portion of craisins or raisins for added sweetness, remember to limit the number when using dried fruit.

Sweets after meals are challenging for me, too. I made a Spark People chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe, and limiting myself to one of those after a meal is helping.

I still have an enormous amount of sweets in the house from the holidays but have frozen them. Now I can't just reach in and indulge a craving. I went to a fresh market and bought lots of fruit & veggies that I cut up and can snack on. This is the actual first day I am again changing my eating habits from the holidays.

Good luck!! We can do this.

For me, a large trigger is the after meals sugar trigger! After lunch and after dinner I ALWAYS want something sweet. I have tried this week to replace the chocolate with fruit and it actually works perfectly. I haven't been able to avoid all sweets but now that the holidays are over and almost all chocolate is out of the house it should be much easier! I have also tried to make alternatives to eating 20 chocolates such as making hot chocolate or chocolate soy milk. But the fruit seems to be doing the trick and I dont feel yucky after and dont wake up with a sugar hangover!
Now of course, I do love chocolate and need to find new ways of incorporating my favorites into my life without all the junk! I have found a black bean cake recipe! It looks delicious and I plan on tweaking it a little. I have found a natural alternative to the regular icing sugar and will use coconut cream instead of the butter. And soy yogurt for the icing :D That not only gets rid of alot of the horrible sugar but also the flour, butter and salt! I'm really looking forward to it.
There are plenty of other recipes that replace the really bad white devil sugar with honey, fruit and agave that I look forward to trying. We cant avoid sweets, we just need to change them!

Cheers to positive change!
