nope popeye... for most things I actually add in the brand (IE I eat the rozini smart taste pasta... and I go by cups not ounces, 3/4 c uncooked = about 1 c cooked, ect)

the amusing thing is that after all of that work... i never made the dish....

my plan had been to make it then split it up and drop off most of it to a friend of mine that just had a baby on 9/11... turns our her husband doesn't eat cheese lol (yeah i'm laughing my butt off right no btw)

so instead, i just cooked up the chicken, made the pasta and then just threw in some spaghettii sauce) which calorie wise isn't that bad either lol

anyway that's where i'm at. still keeping track of the calories though (man it is hard)

If you are going by Sparks's calories for two ounces of cooked pasta - they are wrong.

I've always thought two ounces of cooked pasta looked way too small, so I took three different kinds of pasta (macaroni, linguine, and spaghetti), measured out the 2 ounces of dry weight and cooked them.

The three of them ranged from 3.25 to 3.75 ounces when I weighed the cooked product. In one of the blogs, Coach Nancy said that a half cup was the measure for pasta and rice.

Just a heads up and maybe where your big difference is.

It also makes a big difference if you are using breast meat or thighs (higher in fat & calories) and skin on or skin off (Did that sound like the Karate Kid - the old one?).

I don't know what the other ingredients are, but if it has mild cheddar cheese, you can substitute low fat Cheddar, but use 1/3 less - or fat free sharp cheddar at about 1/2 the amount of mild.

I was in the food business for about 18 years and I've picked up a few tricks for substitutions here and there.

Go to SparkRecipes.com (under the Healthy lifestyle heading) and do the recipe from there. It will be the easiest way to figure it out and add to the tracker. A food group will add all the ingredients to the tracker and if you by mistake and add it twice it will save you a headache of deleting a bunch of ingredients. You can also start a "cookbook" for your recipes and even share them with others if you choose.

PS. I was surprised to find my husband did that to find out the calorie count for the little nut squares he makes for the squirrels and for sale on his website. He was impressed with it.

QT - I don't think you are missing any steps - that sounds about right. But another benefit to using the food groupings - you can save it and it's easier to add to your nutrition tracker.

Go to Nutrition Tracker and add this as a food group, where you can enter all the ingredients and then you can look at them individually within the grouping. Then you can see where you want to make alterations based on the big picture.

Ok I'm kind of stuck... I'm taking one of my favorite recipies (garlic chicken Mac and Cheese) and I'm trying to rework it to make it healthier (currently it's about 1000 calories per serving) ouch... but how do I figure out the calorie content? my thought was to sit down with each ingredient and write down each of it's calorie/fat/ carb content for the amount used in the recipie and then add it all together and then divide it by the number of servings? but is it that simple? I feel like i'm missing a step somewhere... anyone have suggestions? thanks
