QT - that stuff just looks so nasty but probably isn't as bad as it looks. Of course, I don't eat red meat so I wouldn't try it anyway.

Pops,
I had to laugh at the three items that you listed... my husband eats all three! But he is a Cajun and after 20+ years of living here, I have learned that they eat just about anything! The first time he cooked a dish called debris, I said, "What?! You do know what debris means, don't you?!" Needless to say, I did not try it! I absolutely refuse to eat something that not only smells like trash, it is called another name for trash!

Pops doesn't care for Brussels Sprouts or beets.

Can not stand and will absolutely not eat two things that used to be fairly common. One can still be found at regular butcher shops, beef tongue. The other is a specialty item, pickled pigs feet. Make it three things - no Mountain Oysters.

I'm good for snails, calamari (squid), snake, calves brains, alligator, frog legs - mostly willing to try anything that's not still alive and I'd prefer they take the feet off of frog legs. But you can't have everything your way.

ohh about sweet potatos, if you like them baked and plain or mostly plain. take a whole raw sweet potato. cut a slit in the top running most of the length of the potato. put in a small pat of butter or the topping of your choice, or none at all. and cook in the microwave on medium power until tender (usually 8-10 minutes for a small potato) and voila... a quick easy side and no having to turn on the oven!

I'll have to try it again soon... emoticon
The more healthy foods I like the less likely I'll get bored.
Learned just a few years ago that sweet potatoes sliced and baked are delicious - much better than mashed the wya my mom always made them and healthier than smothered in sugar and crumb topping or marshmallows emoticon

Krander- That's how my grandma prepares it as well. She slices the eggplant into 1/8 inch slices, removes as much as of the seeds as possible. coats them in breadcrumbs and bakes them at 350 until they're just slightly crispy. then she uses them in place of noodles in lasnaga(sp?). It is really really wonderful!

SaltyChocolate - I want to but I don't want to prepare it myself - for fear of ruining it. Good tip about the seeds! I'll have to keep that in mind when attempting another eggplant dish. My mom doesn't like it either but said that my step-sister made a delicious eggplant lasagna with frozen breaded eggplant from Trader Joes. I've been meaning to try that too.

Kramder, have you tried baba gannouj? (Also spelled babba ghannoush) It's delicious. It is roasted eggplant with garlic, lemon juice, tahini, all mashed together. It's delicious. It just cant' contain the eggplant seeds; they are very bitter.

As far as I know there is exactly one thing I don't like (and I really am willing to try most anything - I haven't obviously and I probably won't have the opportunity for a lot of things and why should I add something else to the list of things that I do like??)
Yes my biggest stumbling block is that I really really really like food all food!!
Oh BTW I LOVE brussels sprouts (so good roasted with a little evoo drizzeled over and salted yum!!) and the one thing that I don't like - so far - eggplant but I will attempt it again. I've heard that it is horrible when cooked poorly. I can not cook it properly neither can the Olive Garden for that matter.

Nope - though I will make myself eat some healthy foods in spite of not liking them, like tomatoes and spinach. Absolutely hate sprouts and salmon, which is way too fishy. There are very few fruits I don't like - cantaloupe being one. Veggies - I like enough to make do, like potatoes/sweet potatoes, most beans (except Lima), corn, peas (as long as they're frozen), carrots and pickled beets.

I have yet to try Brussell sprouts but I have a bag of frozen ones in my freezer; I might give them a try. Now salmon is one of my all time favorite foods.

The one food I tried that I thought I wouldn't like but now totally enjoy is sauteed fennel. I still don't care for the raw stuff - too harsh. But fennel sauteed with some olive oil and dried sage is absolutely delicious. It's also great in roasted root veggies - yum!

I LOVE Brussels Sprouts! My kids don't really care for them, but they will eat them. (I am very blessed they my kids have always been willing to try anything).
I am originally from Kansas but married a Cajun and have lived in Louisiana for over 20 years now... so there have been quite a few things that I would probably have not eaten had I not moved here... crawfish for one. I FINALLY decided to try it last year. I can't say that it is awesome... but I will eat it now. I think it is more the thought that bothers me than the taste.

I have tried foods I thought I didn't like, and I was right. That is a big problem for me. I only like five veggies: corn, carrots, beets, all beans, (especially green beans) and green peas. I don't eat fruits except occasionally applesause if there are no lumps. I saw brussel sprouts being prepared using nutmeg on TV one day, it looked good. I wish I could eat more veggies. I have tried many, also tried fruits. I like the flavor of most fruits, but not the fruit itself. It is great you came to like the sprouts. They are good for you. Thanks for sharing your success.

I thought I would hate salmon - but I finally tried it and it is now one of my very fav things !

I also tried brussel sprouts recently - wasn't crazy about them -but wasn't horrified like I thought I would be.

I'm just curious here.... Have you ever tried a food that you thought you would absolutely HATE.... and then you actually like, or even love it? If so, what is it?

The reason I asked. Brussel Sprouts. I always thought they were gross looking, and smelly and would be horrible.... oh how wrong was I. While they aren't my favorite thing ever, they were still pretty darn good (especially with some butter). Definatly something I would have again, although I will say that I do prefer spinich) Hugs!
