Thinned my carrots out again, the cold weather has not hurt them. Found a few more zucchini under the dead leaves. Added zucchini and carrots to a pot of veggie soup for dinner. Also made zucchini grilled cheese sandwiches to enjoy with the soup.

Planted a bed of red onions today. I was going to pull out the watermelons but discovered another good size melon growing so I will leave it for now.

Temps got down to 32 on Monday morning but warmed up to 65 so no damage that I could see. Still a lot of green tomatoes that I am hoping will ripen before freezing. The joys of gardening!!

Fencing is pulled and all our supplies have been brought home from the rented plots. The deer have been feasting on the leftovers, don't think there is a leaf left on the sweet potato vines or any small sweet potatoes we left behind. Momma mouse moved her family elsewhere.

Planted a bed of yellow onions this morning, thinned the carrots and started preparing another bed to plant red onions. emoticon I am going to clean out the watermelon bed to prepare it to plant garlic.

Cold weather is moving in so I harvested all of our peppers, cucumbers and watermelon, red tomatoes and head lettuce. Still have 4 pumpkins that are to green to harvest and lots of green tomatoes so we will cover them tonight and hope they don't freeze. Weather will be back up in the 70s during the day but 30s at night. emoticon

Started emptying some of my flower baskets. Did one already and will do a 2nd one tomorrow, dump everything in the compost bin and clean out the pots. Hate to do it, I usually leave them as long as possible, but some are looking pretty sad. I also cleaned out the hummingbird feeders and refilled them for the last time. I haven't seen the hummers for a week or so, so they may have already started to migrate south for the winter. The bees are still visiting it, and I may get some visitors when the hummingbirds that spent the summer in Canada start flying south too.
Just have the 4 tomato plants at home left. Going to finish tearing down the fence at the rented plots this weekend. Already took off the top layer of fencing so the deer can get in and enjoy the tomato vines and sweet potato vines, plus the volunteer wheat from the seed in the straw we used for mulch. .

Getting a bed ready to plant onions. Getting anxious, harvested some potatoes to go with dinner. They need to grow some more so I am going to wait for the first frost to dig the rest.

Wow, that's a lot of pumpkin! Sounds like you are almost done for the season.

Our morning temp was 39 so it won't be long before we have our first frost. There are still a lot of green tomatoes so I am hoping the temps will hold until they have time to ripen. I harvested almost 2 lbs of hot peppers yesterday and made pepper jam. The zucchini is still producing about 2 a day. I am going to grind and freeze some of it today, there are 10 sitting on the counter. I have been making savory zucchini bread that we use for sandwiches and individual pizza crust.

Happy gardening!
Debra

Picked 75 small to medium pumpkins, lots of tomatoes, last of the beans. Weeded. All that's left are a few potato plants, the tomatoes, and all the sweet potatoes, that we'll wait until frost kills the vines before digging them up and seeing how we did this year.

Hi, am joining your discussion b/c this is my first day back with SparkPeople and your topic seemed a helpful one. I am hoping to learn more about gardening. I'm a mission worker working in Ghana where it is very hot and dry. I've seldom tried to have a garden in such a climate, but I will be trying one now as a "role model" to neighbors.
Do you have any experience in gardening in very dry climates?
Thank you!

Sorry for your loss, after all your hard work. emoticon

I dug up two potatoes for our dinner on Sunday, I usually let my potatoes go until the vines start to die.

Glad you have some veggies to enjoy! emoticon

Sorry to hear about your grapevine. I hope the others are left alone.

I was going to dig up the rest of the potato plants. A few were mostly brown so dug them up. Went to dig one of the ones that is still very green and the potatoes were small. So changed my mind and decided to let them grow until they too start to die back or are killed by frost.
Pulled most of my cucumbers, thanks to powdery mildew. They weren't doing anything anyway. Still one vine left that has a cucumber on it that isn't quite ready to pick yet.
Beans are about done, corn is done, tomatoes are really ripening now, so picked lots today. Zucchini is also done, thanks to powdery mildew too, so I pulled them and hauled the vines off as I don't want it to spread to anything else. Have some yellow squash plants that still are fine and producing.
Sweet potato vines went all over, weeds in that area didn't have a chance. Still very healthy, so they probably won't get dug until a frost kills the vines.
Pumpkin vines are also dying. LOTS of orange pumpkins to pick, probably Thursday or Saturday, since we have things going on the other evenings.

Harvested more zucchini today, I grated 4 today and made cheesy zucchini bread, zucchini brownies and will make some zucchini grilled cheese with veggie soup for dinner tomorrow.
I still have 9 zucchini on the counter.

The cheesy zucchini bread was quite yummy, we will add garlic the next time we bake it. Recipe is on Pinterest as is the zucchini grilled cheese.

I'm jealous of all the tomatoes and peppers. I'm probably going to have to buy some to make my salsa for the year. I have some new blossoms forming as the weather is cooling, but if we get another blast of hot air they will be gone, too.

Your garden sounds great, Cathy. Except the tomatoes. I fantasize about rain. We aren't likely to have any before November, if then. It is cooling a bit here, not expected to be over 90 all week.

Great!
We got several inches of rain over the past 2 days. Came nice and slow, so soaked in to the ground well. Means I don't need to water for at least a week - but I DO need to go mow the yard again. Cucumbers are slowing down (only have the 2 volunteer plants). Picking corn now from the 2nd planting, and picking beans too. Potatoes are starting to die back, so hope to dig them up this weekend after the ground dries a little. Getting zucchini and yellow squash too, and some tomatoes. Been a rough year for the tomatoes. They don't like to set fruit once it gets above a certain temperature.
Also picked our first orange pumpkin. We usually do start getting them around this time of year. Fortunately they also do keep as long as they are stored in a cool place.

So far everything is working! Wasted lots of time rebooting everything multiple times. Should have just called the company after it quit on me the 2nd time. Would have saved myself lots of time and frustration, and maybe I could have gotten some of my yardwork done.

On the bright side, we did get about half an inch of rain last night. Means I don't have to spend time watering for a few days, and the weeds should be easier to pull.

Didn't even get over to the garden plots to check. Had to water all the flower pots, and spent lots of time trying to get my internet working - ended up needing to get a new modem, hook it up, and then get it activated again. Before that I rebooted the router, modem, and my computer multiple times. So much for all the things I had planned on getting done today!

Sorry about all your heat, I admire your determination to plant. The high here was only 91 today, cooler than last week, but still not pleasant. I've always said I could have a garden or fingernails. I think I should have opted for fingernails this year. Between heat and drought my garden is not impressive.

We are in our 21st day of temps over 100!

I spent the morning preparing a raised bed so I could plant some carrots. It is now or never so despite the hot weather I went ahead as they need to get growing, our first frost date is October 15.

I decided to try broadcast planting, I put the seeds in a pepper shaker and just shook them all over the bed, then I covered them with more garden soil. I have to water about every 3 hours to keep the soil moist. This will be a challenge as I am gone 3 days a week so I will be depending on my husband to keep the bed moist.

We got rain yesterday, about an inch. We really needed it. Now it is going to be easier to pull weeds, which unfortunately seem to thrive even when it is so dry!

I see no new cucumbers or squash growing, I am thinking it is from the heat. We finally had a nice comfortable day, high was only 98. It has cooled off now, at 6:30 it is 85.

We had a few sprinkles this afternoon, we were hoping for rain.

There is still lots of smoke from the CA fires.

One of the problems is that when they find a plant they like to eat, they leave pheromones on it to attract other beetles (so they can mate with them) and the others then home in on the scent. So I also douse my plants with soapy water and then spray them really good to try and wash off the pheromones, hoping that others in the area won't come calling too. The numbers are definitely going down, didn't see any on the sunflowers today and only a couple on the petunias.

Cathy, I hope you get your bug problem under control, have you tried Neam oil? I have never used it but have heard that it is a natural insecticide.
