Not a bad analogy, but that was not so much my quarrel with Home. I had the sense it was more like an unfinished canvas, like she ran out of paint. I think my main frustration was with the character Lily. For the first half of the novel, Lily exists only as a part of Frank's story. But then she appears on her own for a chapter. We aren't given the sense this is merely a cameo performance; Morrison brings her skill to play and creates a fine portrait, as though she were setting Lily up to be a parallel or secondary theme. And then she drops her. Had Lily not been brought to center stage at all, I think I might have been content to read the book much as you did, as a narrative poem or parable of redemption and return (it did remind me a bit of Pilgrim's Progress). But the introduction of the character at a time when she really did not advance the main narrative set me up to expect a more epic scope for the remainder of the book. One thing I should note, though, is that I read this on my Kindle. I never saw the book, or held it in my hand, so I had no idea of its size or heft. I do acknowledge that if I had encountered the book as a slim volume, my expectations might have been different, and therefore might have been met.

I liked HOME the way I like an exquisitely poetical narrative poem; some of our members have not liked it as much and I understand how it can be a failure. If you want to see an oil canvas and the artist gives you a small water-color miniature, you can feel betrayed.
