Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

All Saints Day
All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows' Day, or Hallowmas, is a Christian celebration in honor of all the saints from Christian history. In Western Christianity, it is observed on November 1st by the Roman Catholic Church, the Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church, and other Protestant denominations. The Eastern Orthodox Church and associated Eastern Catholic churches observe All Saints Day on the first Sunday following Pentecost.
The Christian festival of All Saints Day comes from a conviction that there is a spiritual connection between those in Heaven and on Earth. In Catholic tradition, the holiday honors all those who have passed on to the Kingdom of Heaven. It is a national holiday in numerous historically Catholic countries. In Methodist tradition, All Saints Day relates to giving God earnest gratitude for the lives and deaths of his saints, remembering those who were well-known and not. Additionally, individuals throughout Christian history are celebrated, such as Peter the Apostle and Charles Wesley, as well as people who have personally guided one to faith in Jesus, such as one's relative or friend.

In addition to weekly worship gatherings, "All Saints Day" annually reminds us of our connectedness as Christians. It's commemorated every November 1st. Perhaps, you were taught to think of saints as statues in a church building. But the Bible teaches something completely different. Who is a saint? You are. That is if you’re a follower of Jesus. God calls a "saint" anyone who trusts in Christ alone for salvation. See Acts 9:13, 26:10, Romans 8:27, and 1Corinthians 1:2.

Holy Saturday is the final day of Lent, of Holy Week, and of the Easter Triduum, the three days (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday) immediately preceding Easter, during which Christians commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ and prepare for His Resurrection.

I cannot remember, but, I am sure I have...

Has anyone attended Holy Saturday Services? Do they have Communion? As old as I am, I've never attended a Holy Saturday service. I'm thinking of going this Saturday.

Protestant versions of the Bible have fewer books than the Catholic versions.

Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, Maccabees I & II, and Esther were the latest writings of the Old Testament and were written in Greek rather than Hebrew.
In 1534, Martin Luther translated the Bible into German. He grouped the seven deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament under the title "Apocrypha," declaring. "These are books which are not held equal to the Sacred Scriptures and yet are useful and good for reading" because those Old Testament books were not written in Hebrew originally.
His action had the permanent consequence of omitting the seven deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament in Protestant versions of the Bible.

I only ask this because I know that there are a lot of people out there that know more about the bible than I do... I just don't know much (LOL), but I probably know more than I think I know. (Ha!)

Does the Catholic Bible have ALL the books in them where other religions don't have them all?

I thought I've heard that where we have all the true books, there are still some books that aren't in our bible b/c they aren't proven to be correct by theologian scholars.

I'm so confused.

Pray. Hope. Don't worry.

The Blessing of the Throats is a sacramental of the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated on February 3, the feast day of Saint Blaise of Sebaste. It also celebrated in some of the Eastern Catholic Churches, and in parishes of the Anglican Communion on the same day as a commemoration.

The Order of the Blessing of Throats on the Feast of Saint Blaise is in the Book of Blessings (de Benedictionibus).

This year, Pancake Day is taking place on Tuesday February 13 – so get that lemon and sugar - or whatever floats your boat - at the ready.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday - so the date varies each year but will be between February 3 and March 9.

The day precedes Ash Wednesday, which is the start of when Christians celebrate Lent and typically fast from certain food or activities.

Very cool!

I now have a prayer card that I touched to the reliquary of St. Francis Xavier's arm.

edited to add - I don't know what something that our Lord Himself touched would be considered. If saint's bones, items they touched are relics, then I would imagine there is something much greater about something Jesus Himself touched. Oh! And I just thought - all the Apostles would have touched that chalice, too, right? Wow. Best. Relic. Ever.

MeToo! I didn't know there were 3 classes. I suppose that's one reason everyone wants to find the chalice from the last supper. My little 3rd class relic is a cloth that was touched to St. Rita's bone/ relic.

I only recently learnt that there were different classes as well.

Several years ago, my work colleague's granddaughter had a stroke shortly after birth. The grandmother's new parish was in the process of being built, and it was to be dedicated to St. Gianna (recent saint, mother, wife, pediatrician). She wrote to the husband of the saint, and obtained a piece of clothing that St. Gianna had worn. It was placed in the incubator of the newborn baby and the family begged her intercession. The little girl is now school-aged and she has no ill effects from the stroke. They had thought that she would have developmental delays or physical challenges, but she does not, praise God!

Anyway, I had no idea before then that clothing could be a relic - I thought it was only bones and things.

That will be so nice! And I didn't know until recently that there are different classes of Relics. I have a 3rd class relic that was given to me, (and the whole third class pupils at the Catholic grade school I went to), 58 years ago. I don't recall anything being said about the different classes.

Tomorrow, I have the opportunity to venerate the arm relic of St. Francis Xavier!!

For the first time ever, the relic will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada!

I've been reading up on it. I've only ever seen one other relic in my life (first class relic that is) and that was a bone from St. Anne's arm. This is a whole arm!

The priests handed out a program that had prayers and hymns for the ceremony. One by one they lit a candle in a votive glass and said the person's name and the family went up to the alter area and received the candle, returned to their seat. After all the names were called, more songs and prayers were said. Then the priests had a little open house in the kitchen/ dining area. It was very nice. Alot of people were there. It maybe lasted 30/ 40 mins.
Thanks for asking!

Our church is having a "Liturgy of Remembrance" this Sunday. I'm not sure what exactly that means....... does any one know? It will be in the evening. Is it like a Mass? Will there be Communion?

Denver, Colo., Jun 2, 2017 / 02:52 am (CNA/EWTN News).- This weekend, the Church celebrates Pentecost, one of the most important feast days of the year that concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church.

Here’s what you need to know about the feast day:

The timing and origins of Pentecost

Pentecost always occurs 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, and ten days after his ascension into heaven. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and Pentecost depends on the timing of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13.

The timing of these feasts is also where Catholics get the concept of the Novena – nine days of prayer – because in Acts 1, Mary and the Apostles prayed together “continuously” for nine days after the Ascension leading up to Pentecost. Traditionally, the Church prays the Novena to the Holy Spirit in the days before Pentecost.

The name of the day itself is derived from the Greek word pentecoste, meaning 50th.

The reason Pentecost falls 50 days after Easter comes from a parallel Jewish holiday, Shavu`ot, which falls 50 days after Passover. Shavu’ot is sometimes called the festival of weeks, referring to the seven weeks since Passover.

Originally a harvest feast, Shavu`ot now commemorates the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai, when the Lord revealed the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. Every year, the Jewish people renew their acceptance of the gift of the Torah on this feast.

What happens at Pentecost?

In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room.

A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, allowing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other. It was such a strange phenomenon that some people thought the Christians were just drunk – but Peter pointed out that it was only the morning, and that the phenomenon was caused by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit also gave the apostles the other gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission – to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel.

Where’s that in the bible?

The main event of Pentecost (the strong driving wind and tongues of fire) takes place in Acts 2:13, though the events immediately following (Peter’s homily, the baptism of thousands) continue through verse 41.

Happy Birthday, Church

It was right after Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his firs

The Gift of Motherhood

Today, we celebrate the feast of Mary, Mother of God. Her relationship with Jesus bears all the hallmarks of motherhood…tenderness, affection, and love. Mary was the first to believe. She courageously accepted God’s message that she would bear the Messiah. Through her life, she shows us how to believe – how to follow her Son, Jesus.

Mary is also our Mother, and she bears a deep affection for each of her children. “Mary belongs indissolubly to the mystery of Christ, as she belongs also to the mystery of the Church from the beginning, from the day of the birth of the Church” (St. John Paul II, Mother of the Redeemer, 27). In our efforts to build the Church, we rightly look to Mary who brought forth Christ, so that through the Church, Christ may be born in the hearts of each of us.

Mary, the Mother of God and our Mother, has a completely unique and maternal role in the life of the Church. On this special feast honoring the gift of her motherhood, please join me in praying for her powerful intercession as I reach out to help those less fortunate, those in material and spiritual need, and the forgotten.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us and for the Church throughout the world.

Let Go and Let God!

The first Gospel of Advent urges us to stay interiorly alert and awake, ready to respond at a moment's notice to the signs of God's coming.

What might be the signs that you are 'dozing off' spiritually? What can you do to "stay awake" for the Lord's coming?

Look it up! Matthew 24:37-44

i did a payer walk last week. my church did not run it. another one was in charge. it was a neat it sprinkled a little but it was neat to take the time in public prayer. it started at 1 church and went through the neighborhood. we had a station at a small park, at a cemetary and ended at a small chapel. it was about 2 miles. there was a bus for people who struggled to walk it.

I was not able to take part in a procession this past Sunday - I was sad that I missed it! Hopefully, next year I can take part again.

What order of nuns are they?

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

Don't forget to begin the Divine Mercy Novena today..

I began to fast on bread and water...didn't do too bad with it...it is a challenge, but, I had to stop when I was put on graveyard shift...it's been a couple of weeks and I'm still struggling to make the adjustment

If you are interested in fasting, check out "Live the Fast"...it's an amazing story and the breads bought there are very nutritious and filling...

Lent is a time for fasting. many people find it difficult either for mental or medical reasons. There are other ways of fasting.

A Different Type of Fasting

There are many ways to fast. Why not fast from criticism, gossip, judging others, or passing on rumors? Why not abstain from unwarranted fear and anxiety? You can also tell that inner voice inside your head that criticizes you to abstain from eroding your ability to be the confident, blessed person God calls you to be. These are beautiful ways to observe the Lenten call to fasting and abstinence. In the book, Praying Lent, the authors offer suggestions on different ways to fast during Lent.

Epiphany is Wednesday.. emoticon

at our church they will bless water Tuesday..at the church.

the priests can also go and bless your home if you want.. definition:

Epiphany, a feast day which celebrates the Magi's visit to the infant Jesus in the Western church traditions, and the baptism of Jesus in Eastern church traditions, is celebrated twelve days after Christmas in some Christian traditions. Many people may come to the dictionary because they hear the word used to refer to a religious holiday, but they may be more familiar with the second meaning of "epiphany": a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way.
Epiphany comes from the Greek word that means "appearance" or "manifestation." The feast day marks the "manifestation" of Jesus to the world, and the second, more familiar "epiphany," is the sudden "appearance" or "manifestation" of something in a new, clear way.

THE STORY BEHIND CORPUS CHRISTI:

The feast of ‪#‎CorpusChristi‬ celebrates the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. The feast dates to the Middle Ages and originated with a visionary nun and a Eucharistic miracle.

In 1263 a German priest, Fr. Peter of Prague, made a pilgrimage to Rome. He stopped in Bolsena, Italy, to celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Christina. At the time he was having doubts about the ‪#‎RealPresence‬ of Christ in the Eucharist. He was affected by the growing debate among theologians---for the first time in the history of the Church---about the Body and Blood of Christ being actually present in the Blessed Sacrament. In response to his doubt, when he said the words of consecration, blood started seeping from the consecrated host and onto the altar and corporal.

Fr. Peter reported this miracle to Pope Urban IV who was then in nearby Orvieto. The pope sent delegates to investigate and ordered that host and blood-stained corporal be brought to Orvieto. The relics were then placed in the Cathedral of Orvieto, where they remain today as seen in this photograph.

This miracle confirmed the visions given to St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon in Belgium (1193-1258). She had a series of visions in which she was instructed to work to establish a feast to honor the ‪#‎HolyEucharist‬, to which she had a great devotion. After many years she convinced the bishop, the future Pope Urban IV, to create a special feast. Soon after her death Pope Urban instituted the Corpus Christi ‪#‎feastday‬ and celebrated it for the first time in Orvieto in 1264, a year after the Eucharistic miracle in Bolsena.

Inspired by the miracle, Pope Urban commissioned a Dominican friar, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose the Mass and Office for the feast of Corpus Christi. Aquinas' hymns of "Pange Lingua," "Tantum Ergo," "Panis Angelicus" and "O Salutaris Hostia" are the beloved songs we still sing today during Exposition and Benediction of the ‪#‎BlessedSacrament‬.

Jesus asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy, which falls on the Sunday following Easter, be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy. The nine day Novena begins on Good Friday.

Jesus gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena. The Novena and accompanying intentions for each day can be found at:

“It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; he is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; he is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is he who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is he who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is he who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal.”

ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II

What is happening with the link, I believe, is that the link is being divided up in the post. So far, I've found if I just put the basic link in there, and then you copy it to your browser search, you can get to the article. Don't use SP's "link" feature.

I could not see it..

WHAT IS PERPETUAL ADORATION?

Perpetual Adoration is a Eucharistic devotion whereby members of a given parish (or other entity) unite in taking hours of adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament (in most cases, exposed), both during the day and throughout the night, seven days a week.

Why is exposition in the monstrance preferred?

To see Jesus visibly present under the appearance of the small white host is much more conducive to intimacy than hidden away in the tabernacle. Moreover, it adds an extra responsibility on the adorers to be sure to be faithful to the hours they are scheduled, since the suggested norm for having Jesus exposed in the monstrance is that there should be at least two adorers present, and He must never be left alone. Could not these words of our Lord be applied today: "Indeed, this is the will of My heavenly Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son, and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day."

It looks a good one, a nice review of Adoration.

I wish you well in your endeavours to increase your time spent in Adoration. I know I go through periods when I cannot sit still in the chapel. My friend that I go to Adoration with also has that problem sometimes. I know if we are alone in there, and one of us gets "antsy", we wander around, admiring the statues or the monstrance, etc, as we know we are not trying to be disrespectful, but just are having trouble sitting in one place for too long. We don't dare do that when others are there, though, as they may not understand, and we don't want to distract them from their prayers.

edited to add - the link I provided isn't working either. If anyone wants to see the article, simply go to EWTN website and search "adoration"

I have problems with sitting still, silence and calming my mind. I We have a perpetual adoration chapel in my area. My church and 3-4 others take care of it. I finally went on monday afternoon. i planned it the day before and decided to not make any excuses. i figured i may not last an hour, but i still thought it was something i wanted to do. i was probably only there for about 15 minutes. but i did like being there.

About the St Gerard medal .....I would have it blessed. Most priests are very willing to do it.

I recently had a rosary blessed, I was not sure it was blessed because I bought it years and years ago at a flea market ( I did not want it getting into the wrong hands and have since gotten to really like that particular rosary) and when I asked the priest he said, if I was not sure he would reccomend doing it. So I had it blessed by one of my favorite people in the world [who just happens to be a priest].

Take Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O lord, I return it. All is Thine, dispose of it wholly according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and thy grace, for this is sufficient for me.

Happy Birthday to the Church today!

I sometimes feel that the Holy Spirit is forgotten as well - and without Him. where would we be, right?

BENE - that's wonderful that you have Holy Hour on First Fridays. The parish affiliated with the Catholic school where I work has Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on first Fridays. I feel so blessed to be able to go in here on my break times to adore.

I know what you mean. I find the Holy Spirit so special and so forgotten most times. I pray to the Holy Spirit whenever I have a difficult decision to make and ask for knowledge and wisdom in making the decisions;

Let Go and Let God!

I would definitely get it blessed, Angie. Wear it often, and always to Mass. When you bless yourself with the Holy Water entering and leaving Church, touch the medallion with the Holy Water after blessing yourself. If it is in God's plan, He will bless you with another child. It never hurts to pray to our Mother Mary, also.
