My doctor wanted me to explore having bariatric surgery, so I went to an informational seminar. The doctor spoke about our stomaches and how it is a myth that our stomaches shrink when we eat less food. He talked about the elasticity of the stomach and how it can impact you knowing that your are full. I had talked about being an emotional eater and how sometimes after eating a full dinner just minutes later I will still be hungry. He had talked about the elasticity. I had decided to wait and see how this go at losing weight goes, but I've thought about at times. In talking with my husband, I felt like this is something that would be helpful to distinguish between.

I do use the food tracker and it has been helpful in working on portion control. I"ll have to pay attention to what I'm eating to see if there are empty calories at play. It's rare i have that satisfied feeling, but maybe I need to learn to listen to my body better.

Sugar and crunchy things usually go down unnoticed. That's why people who intend a handful of potato chips don't notice that they're polishing of the entire, large bag. Same for cookies and such.

I used to be able to weigh out an ounce of half ounce of tortilla chips and be fine. That came to an end when I didn't stop at the ounce. I tried buying boxes of individual one-ounce bags and failed. I'd finish one packet and then go back to the kitchen for another...and another...and... I had no choice but to stop buying chips in any packaging.

I do experience this and it is tough to deal with. I often feel like I did not eat enough. I think some of it has to do with eating empty calories. I notice it a lot when I eat a candy bar or chips. Your body sends that signal of being satisfied and then we end up eating more. It is hard to break.

Feeling full versus feeling satisfied or satiated--there is a difference between hunger and wanting to eat more.

I'm not sure what you doctor's objections are, nevertheless, hunger is a feeling of discomfort and/or weakness caused by lack of food. In another word; it's physiological.

If these physiological symptoms are absent, the desire to eat may just be a craving- like the feeling I get every time I smell bacon cooking-- a psychological response.

I not sure what stomach size/elasticity has to do with the DESIRE to eat. It probably has to do with HOW MUCH one can eat.

I agree with the prior post:Don't kid yourself about the amount that you're really eating. Wha t helps me is to drink water with my meal.

I know nothing of such stomach maladies, so I'll give you my take on deciphering the difference between genuine hunger and emotional eating. My having a lapband may help me distinguish more easily than those who haven't had one of the restrictive surgical procedures. I'm unable to say for sure, because I probably never in my life before surgery thought about it.

When I eat, I watch for the moment when I want to continue eating -- "I could eat another couple of bites" - but recognize that I don't need them -- I feel satisfied with what I've already eaten.

As an aside, I recall my father saying on a few occasions when I was a kid that the time to stop is as I discovered for myself at age 61.

In doing research as my doctor asked me to do. I learned that sometimes when people talk about never feeling full no matter how much they eat, may be because of how their stomach is with it's elasticity. Others have said that's part of emotional eating. How do you differentiate between the two and know which you are? I experience this quite often when I have eaten dinner and 15 minutes still hungry and it feels like I hadn't eaten anything. Anyone else go through this and what are your thoughts?
