The fund raising can be intimidating, but you have to not be afraid to ask for $. You will get some no's, don't take them personally. I found that making it part of conversation, making my story personal and telling everyone I see and know about it and what I am doing got me quickly over that feeling of intimidation. I carry my cards with me. Mine have the TNT Logo, my name, website for donating, my training blog, season and event. I also wear the wristlet that looks like a hospital bracelet with names of survivors and a non survivor on it. I get a ton of people asking about it, and get random donations that way.

Plan events that are easy to bring together and pull off, require little effort, and are low cost. Do it early and have a plan/calendar in place.

Send out letters to every single friend, family, acquaintance past and present you can think of. Half way through training send another letter to everyone that didn't respond with an update letting them know there is still time to donate. I always include a SASE. It makes a difference and is so worth it. I am close to being done fundraising and my event is Walt Disney World.

Good Luck and Enjoy the experience. It is like no other.

The ideas are great! I am excited about participating in the next Team in Training event, but feel a bit overwhelmed about raising that much money (never had to raise that much money before). I am def. taking notes of what everyone have said...

"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.
So love the people who treat you right,
forget about the ones who don't
and believe that everything happens for a reason.
If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it.
Nobody said that it would be easy,
they just promised it would be worth it."

I chose the purple card with the purple flower on it. On the top it reads: The Leukemia and Lymphome Society. Under that: Raising awareness & finding a cure. Below that I have my full name and under that I wrote in "Runner". Then below that I put my event info: (this is last years card) Santa Barbara 1/2 Marathon, November 3, 2007, Goal $5,000.00. Next I put my email address and below that my webpage address.

I don't have a sample to send you, but if you go to www.vistaprints.com. They have free cards you can use. You only have to pay for the shipping and allow them to put their company name on the back of the card (it's very small).

Do you have a picture of an example of a business card I could make up? I think this is a great idea but unsure on what to put on it.
Thanks

I would just make new ones. You want to look professional when you're asking people for money, especially if you don't know them well.

I did the business card for my last event and I didn't use it to my full advantage. I have a lot left over. Do you think it would look cheesy to update the info somehow?

The business card is a great idea! I just started my website up last night and I've already had a few donations.

I did the business card and it is great to hand out! I have gotten donations from strangers because of my wrist band I wear and then handing them the business card with my website address.

Thanks for the great advice. I really like the business card idea. Already I tell people that I'm doing TNT and they automatically say they'll support me and donate. The business cards would be very handy.

When I was speaking to one of the participants I'm mentoring this season, she asked me to give her a list of things she should do immediately to get her fundraising started. Thought I would share:

1. Set up your website!
2. Make a list of everyone you have an e-mail address for. Write an e-mail to them with the link for your website included so they can make a donation. Ask them to pass your e-mail along to everyone in their address book.
3. Create a signature line for your e-mail account that includes a link to your website and encourage people to visit it to make a donation.
4. Create business cards with your website address on it so if you're speaking to someone about your involvement with TNT, you can give them a card so they can donate when they get home.
5. Write your letter.
6. Make a list of everyone you know -- family, friends, business acquaintenances, church members, old school buddies, neighbors, etc. Don't leave anyone out. Create your mailing list from this.
7. Copy your letter and stuff your envelopes, address them and get them ready for the staff to send them (remember the first 100 letters are mailed for you by the Society - check for your chapter's deadline). Don't forget to include in your letter a donation form and a copy and 2nd donation form. Ask them to pass the copy along to a friend.
8. Sit down and think about the rest of your fundraising plan.

Strong reasons make strong actions.
