emoticon congrats to everyone!

Idgie - it is great you stayed conscious about your choices, and didn't throw yourself off the rest of the metaphorical stairs!

Mary - I'm impressed you are able to leave unplanned food on your plate, I often can't do that (so I had better not put any on my plate at all!)

Barb - your plan is great, l hope it went well!

Good job, everyone! I did okay but not great, and I was able to just let it go and get right back on track. Much better than using it as an excuse to just go wild.

I'm at home now from year end party, savoring each tiny bite of my square of dark chocolate.
I stuck to my plan in 100% and it was surprisingly easy!
Didn't touch bread rolls and butter.
First I filled a large plate with raw vegetables and a few slices of cantaloupe.
Then I went back, served myself a portion of goose leg, cabbage and mashed potatoes.
Sat down and ate it slowly and mostly mindfully - it really helped to see it all spread out in front of me! I felt pleasantly full and didn't feel desire fir seconds and dessert.
I think this was my easiest time eating out ever.
I add this to my Worth It Memories (Foundation skill 10).

Good job here. I ate mindfully and left unwanted food on my plate. I stuck to my no sugar plan and did not miss it at all. And my weight is down a little this morning.

My meal plan is start the day with a fairly high protein breakfast (done) and then have small portions of the mid-afternoon meal, heavy on the veggies. I do have a small piece of pie with my name on it for dessert. I will eat slowly and mindfully. But most of all, I'm going to relax; savor the food that I have planned, and enjoy the company.

My meal plan is in the tracker and I am well within the nutrient allowance for today. I will be preparing a variety of lovely veggies and the traditional turkey with stuffing that is made from whole wheat bread and a lot of savory veggies and herbs. There is no desert on my meal plan. I'm on Day 39 without sugar and it is not worth blowing that streak. I'm practicing the foundation strategies with other Blue Book readers and today I intend to be mindful and savor every aroma and every bite. I have to remind myself to take credit for all of it and to believe in myself.

Plan for today:
B: chickpea-flour "omelet" (a.k.a. chilla)
L: veg soup and sweet potato
D: veg soup and sweet potato
S: veg soup and sweet potato

Plan for tomorrow:
B: veg soup and sweet potato
L: fruits and veggies while cooking
D: fat-free mashed potatoes, vegan oil-free gravy, steamed asparagus, whole-wheat dinner roll
S: fruits and veggies

Plan is not to indulge at all in off-plan foods. My only indulgence days are birthdays.

Sounds good, Trina!

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in Hungary, but I'll think about you Sparkers in the USA! My company's year end party is on the 23rd, I'll use this event for the purpose of this challenge instead.

My Plan:
Breakfast: usual oatmeal with fruit
Lunch: usual butter and cheese sandwich, cucumbers, banana
Dinner:half glass of wine upon arrival, one portion of traditional baked goose legs with cabbage and potatoes, salad, and a portion of fruit.
*portion: OK to eat 25% more than usual, but it will be One Plate, all my food spread out in front of me AND eat it sitting down, slowly, mindfully
*NO starters, appetizers, bread, soup, dessert -.and NO seconds
*I'll drink plenty of water, leave early, and have my one square of dark chocolate at home

I'm going to a Thanksgiving dinner offered by a friend. Since I don't really know what's being served, I'm going to eat as diabetic friendly foods as possible.
Limit to one dessert, if it isn't super sweet.

On actual Thanksgiving, I'm not sure yet. I'll do the same if I'm invited to someone's house. Hard to determine. Just trying to have some idea of a plan.

Hi Team Members,

this challenge is about enjoying Thanksgiving fully, without negative feelings the next morning.

Assignments:
-write a food plan on 21st November for the next two days
-whatever fancy food you wish to eat, put that on your plan too
-follow your plan on 22nd and 23rd November, monitor in writing
-use your Beck skills to stay on track, wherever you are in the program (eat sitting down, slowly, noticing every bite... plan and monitor eating in writing ... deal with food pushers... respond to sabotaging thoughts)

Share your plans and results here!

There will be a similar challenge for Christmas days too.

Have a great day,
Kriszta

Way to stick with the plan, Kriszta.
I'm sticking to my self-imposed Sweets and Treats Fast that I've done between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve the last few years. I'll be challenged on Thursday at our company Christmas party, but I'm up for the challenge. I will keep your good example in mind if/when I am tempted.

I'm after the work Christmas party which I chose to practice my skills,
as we don't have Thanksgiving in Hungary.

I followed my plan at the party in 100%!
No starters no soup no bread no dessert.
I stuck with the meal I chose: duck, pumpkin puree (which was a disappointment, a sauce rather than puree, I expected something more substantial - but it tasted good, at least), the gnocchi (not as good as it sounded either), salad.
My boss asked me several times if I wanted this cookie or that cake... but quite half heartedly ; )
I think he knew I wouldn't eat, and I just kept saying no thanks.
... and now, at home, I got to eat my planned square of dark chocolate.
I'm happy with my food tonight.

I could have subbed the gnocchi for mashed potatoes, rice or canelloni,
but I know deviating from my plan on impulse is a risk.
Had I done that, there is a chance I would have made other changes too, maybe turning into overeating, even a binge.
I'm better off sticking to my plan.

Here is my plan for today. There are delicious foods I will prepare and serve that bring back sweet memories of long gone family. I'll call them special. We eat our main meal early in the day and plan to have leftovers instead of dinner later on. I am going to have measured portions of those old favorites at our main meal and i am going to skip putting anything on my plate that I don't love or that I can have another time. I will eat slowly and savor every bite. And I will redistribute those other left over foods to another day. Or not at all. I will skip the gravy and go for the savory herbed items instead.

I am putting a special response card on my phone to read through the day. I use my phone as a kitchen timer so I will have it nearby and every time it sounds for tasks I will pause and read that response card. And my Advantages list.

Today is supposed to be cold but sunny. I will take a walk at First Encounter Beach, so named because that is where the Europeans first met native people. I will think about how complicated life is for immigrants, and about my own immigrant family who worked hard to make a better life. I will consider how I can make life a little better for the community where I live. And how an attitude of gratitude is as nurturing as the feast I will enjoy today. Happy gratitude day.

Dinner is logged for tomorrow:
Turkey dark meat - 50 grams
Cheesy potatoes - 1/4 cup
grapes - 1 cup
black olives - up to 16, then walk away.
corn - 1/2 cup
cherry fluff salad for dessert - 1/2 cup, with permission to go for seconds. I can't find reliable info on how large a serving is, so am going with the high estimate on the small serving until I have time to analyze the recipe.

We are only at the in-laws for dinner this year - lunch will be totally in my control. My biggest challenge of the entire day will be to avoid snacking. I'm psyching myself up for that big temptation.

Good plans, thanks for sharing!

My day will be easy, because we don't have Thanksgiving here in Hungary, so just my simple regular dinner.
But we will have an early year end party at work on 1st December, so I plan for that now.
Checked the menu:
-soups & appetizers: none, I'm not into them and they just make me hungrier (that's why they are called appetizers ; )
-bread: nope - I can have bread at home any time
-main course: roast duck, ginger pumpkin puree, gnocchi with walnuts - normal dinner portion +25%
-salads: not much to choose from, but there is cesar salad, and I can pick out a bowlful of lettuce
-dessert: nope, last year cheese cake was an eye opener, they look great - but taste is nothing extraordinary. Instead, I'll have my usual 1 square of high quality dark chocolate when I get home.
-alcohol: half glass of red wine upon arrival - that is easy as I have to drive home

But I know this is far less challenging that a real, traditional family gathering...
I wish you a wonderful celebration and delicious meals.

Eating Lighter today because tomorrow is a little bit of everything.
Then a nice walk afterwards.
I don't want to deprive myself but I will remember that it's just food, it's temporary, and I will eat again in a few more hours.
I am eating healthy because I choose to. I am not depriving myself.

Made my plan for Thursday. I modified my regular daily meals to account for a larger and earlier dinner than usual. I am accounting for a small piece of pie along with some sorbet and some side dishes. I can make this work and come in at a calorie range that could be considered ‘maintenance.’ Friday I plan to go back to my regular plan, incorporating left-overs into regular meals and snacks. The biggest change is that I am going to count calories when I see what the leftovers actually are. Other important commitment is making time for physical activity!!

My mealplan this week includes hitting the low end of my calorie range on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to help accommodate the extra calories planned on Thursday and Friday. I've tracked what I think is my typical Thanksgiving indulgences and allow for further indulging at our Friday pie-for-breakfast tradition and then a reasonable portion of leftovers for lunch, and a capper of oatmeal for dinner ! :D all the calories are in the tracker and I know that just having guides in my head of how much I planned to eat will help me enjoy and make good choices.

Getting ready to do my plan. I'm getting a better idea of what Thursday will look like and will post the plan in a day or two. FYI- as someone new to Beck, I can also see that giving myself credit for helpful behaviors and reading response cards for sabotaging thoughts will be very helpful.

We will be caring for our 3 g-kids during the next two weeks to include the Thanksgiving holiday. We have already coordinated our menu and I have selected what I want "most" to eat.

Now to follow through and not let my "deprived, CAN'T eat what I want as much as I want" evil twin scream too loud that she drowns out my "want to reach my goals and not feel stuffed" good twin win!!!

yay for this thread!! looking forward to being mindful around thanksgiving noshing this year.

edit: I just went in and threw a bunch of estimates in my nutrition planner for next Thursday based on what I typically eat on Thanksgiving. now there's an eye opener. Time to think on that and come up with a more reasonable approach. maybe. I do so love thanksgiving meals and I don't eat full turkey dinners like this but once a year. On the other hand I don't like feeling stuffed to the gills. So there is some room for improvement.

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

Definitely interested in participating in this - thanks for the opportunity. One of my challenges will be that I have two celebrations - one at home with friends on the 23rd and one with in-laws and other family on the 25th. So my plan will stretch out a little:). Or maybe take it in two stages??

This turtle is to remind myself that slow but steady wins the race.

Thanks for the Thanksgiving Challenge Kriszta....what a great idea! I remember back to the first Weight Watchers meeting I attended in November 2007 after I restarted. They passed out a paper plate and everyone had to draw what they were eating and the portion amount on the plate. We then calculated the calories for the various dishes/portions. Oh My! It was an eye opener. Doesn't take much on that holiday plate to get to 700+ calories. Good luck everyone and looking forward to reading your food plans! Have a great week. Hugs, Rhonda

I'm planning for an improvement on last year. I will be more specific about possible unexpected temptations. I will bring my own tea bags. Plus this year our format is a little different. We are gathering for only one meal, and I expect our day will be a little shorter than normal. Therefore there will be less time spent constantly flexing my resistance muscle and therefore less risk of being worn down.

Hi Team Members,

this challenge is about enjoying Thanksgiving fully, without negative feelings the next morning.

Assignments:
-write a food plan on 22nd November for the next two days
-whatever fancy food you wish to eat, put that on your plan too
-follow your plan on 23rd and 24th November, monitor in writing
-use your Beck skills to stay on track, wherever you are in the program (eat sitting down, slowly, noticing every bite... plan and monitor eating in writing ... respond to sabotaging thoughts)

Share your plans and results here!

There will be a similar challenge for Christmas days too.

Have a great day,
Kriszta

The beauty of maintenance and the Beck techniques that I've learned, is that one indulgent day does not derail the entire effort. Getting back on track after one day (or even after just one off-plan snack) is not only possible, but is expected. And sure enough, Friday I got back on track, and now I look forward to a good 29 days of staying on track before building in some Christmas Eve recklessness.

Jeanknee, you really hit the nail on that one.

The peace and joy I feel is because I am making and acting on conscious decisions. It isn't about the food at all.

It feels good because I don't feel compelled to act on my unconscious decisions and I don't have to deal with the emotional aftermath of those decisions.

Kathleen,

Glad you had a terrific day!

One of the things I've noticed over the years in my CBT practice as it pertains to eating is it's the thinking that matters most to me, not so much whether or not I stayed on plan, over ate, under ate, etc.

It's what I was thinking BEFORE my choices. Were my choices conscious or unconscious. There are times that I consciously and purposefully over or under eat. I am well aware that I am choosing to go off plan and I do not beat myself up for it. I've made the choice. I know there will be consequences and I deal with them.

I give myself cause for pause when I realize that something unconscious has driven me to behavior that does not support my health and well-being. It's the unconscious choices that concern me. That's when things like the 7-question technique support me.

Hmmm... All went according to plan until 8:00. We ended up staying at our family gathering until 10:30. Alas I did about 500 calories damage in those last 2.5 hours on cashews, black olives and peanut m&ms when I expected to have been at home with my tea. However, I feel the extra visiting and family time was worth the temptation (and caving to it). I had such a terrific day.

emoticon Kriszta for sharing the holiday challenge and creating the thread for us to share our holiday experiences.

Like OHMEMEME, I'd pre-tracked 0.5 C - 1.0 C for the holiday favorites and knew what kind of wiggle room I had before heading over to my sisters. It really helps me seeing it ahead of time. Ate everything I'd pre-tracked and added a beautiful fruit salad that was available.

I did excellent yesterday ... breakfast as planned, no snacking between breakfast and Thanksgiving meal, enjoyed holiday visit and meal, no eating following Thanksgiving dinner and bedtime.

Awoke this morning, stepped on the scale, saw the same thing as yesterday morning.

It is so wonderful to wake the morning after, free of a food coma. I'm so happy to not be doing that to myself anymore.

There was some interesting conversation around the dinner table about my food choices. They were shocked to see my plate free of bread, gravy, and turkey dressing. Many commented that they simply could not live without bread or dessert. I shared that I once felt that way. But, it's a choice. Do I want bread or my health and do I wish to live free of pain? When I mentioned pain, everyone responded that they'd be living without bread. So, there you go. Choices. Grains are no longer my food.

Go! Go! Go! Beck Team!

Thanks for sharing the survival skills and sharing support! Special thanks to team leader Kristza for posting this challenge plan. It worked for me!

I especially liked the thought of "it's only one meal."

I think the plan took away a lot of the anxiety about losing control.

A decision made about how much to weigh is a decision made on how to live. (KANOE) I have decided.

Stuck to my Thanksgiving plan... normal servings of several items on the table... no seconds. I skipped a few of the items on the table. Ate 2 boxed processed wheat containing items and my indigestion went crazy.... it was a wonderful family gathering... so good to see family members again that I hadn't seen in a few years.

Back to Beck today. Yay!

Have a great day everyone!

I've been seeing comments along there lines of "Remember, it is just one meal." For my family, there is food enough for each person to eat multiple meals in one sitting. As much as I miss holidays with my family, I am better off staying away at those times. It is just too hard to eat only enough food for one meal. And the leftovers are just as bad. Much better to visit at other times when it is easier to make healthy choices at meal times.

She believed she could so she did.

I'm in! Food is tracked. Breakfast will be just a little lighter BUT THERE WILL BE BREAKFAST. Tracked 1/2 c or 1 cup servings of feast favs including turkey, casseroles (cornbread dressing, yams, broccoli salad) and dessert (unknown at the moment as my sister is prepping so no spoon-licking sampling here). ENJOY!!!EATSLOWLYANDMINDFULLY Somewhat over cal range but....counted and planned. STICKTOTHEPLAN I'm with Jeanne, two meals Thursday. Absolutely no leftovers except the turkey for Friday! OHWELL and BACKONTRACK

My ARC include keeping recently lost pounds off for holidays, enjoying shopping and dressing up for holiday activities, feeling in control, starting a new year in a happy place!

Best wishes Beck Sparkers!

There will be about 17 of us gathering tomorrow. It is potluck. For our family, this will be a small gathering. We're a large extended family and about 8 - 9 families will not be joining us.

I've not yet pre-tracked tomorrow's food. But, my plan is formulating. I know that I will eat a regular breakfast. Meaning that I will consume around 500 calories which will include approximately 25 g of protein. I will not eat lunch tomorrow. Our Thanksgiving meal will occur in the late afternoon and will be my second and last meal of the day.

Nothing will be consumed following the Thanksgiving meal. There will be no snacking between breakfast and the Thanksgiving meal and there will be no eating following the Thanksgiving meal. I know that I can do this. I've done it successfully the last several years. It is also not unusual for me to consume two meals on the weekend instead of three. So, this routine is really no different for me. The context is different and I need to be aware of food pushers which, thankfully, are usually not an issue amongst this group. Thank you family! I love your support!!!

With my newfound awareness that grains are not tolerated by my body, it will be very easy to forego all baked goods available. Not my food. So, I'll be happy to join those partaking of dessert later in the day, by joining them with a fresh cup of black coffee.

To our success ... emoticon

I am pretty sick, so I have no idea what Thanksgiving will bring. I suspect the challenge will be consuming something other than a hot cup of tea. Guess I am bowing out of the challenge.

I have written my food plan for the next two days. I use portion control as my diet plan and I will be using that during these next two days, too. The Beck skill that I will use the most during this challenge is to eat everything while sitting down. I am doing all the cooking for the Thanksgiving meal and this skill is what will keep me on track. I also have my reasons to lose weight, response cards, and list of distraction techniques handy.

Declining invitations to events that you feel you can't handle safely is exactly the right thing to do. It isn't cheating, Strongdawg, it's being willing to go to any lengths to achieve a goal. Good for you!

Honestly, this is the first Thanksgiving in 17 years that I get to have company. We invited a few male students at the bible college over. We don't have much money ourselves, so I pray just to have enough food for everyone. But I'm SO thrilled and thankful to have company, I don't care what or how much I eat, or even if I get anything! Ok, stuffing, I gotta have stuffing!! emoticon

This will be interesting to see how everyone handles the holiday. I already have my food plan written down through next week, though, because I need to get to various grocery stores to get everything I need (curry leaves?) Next week the stores will be a war zone, so early shopping makes the holiday a little less stressful.

Hi Team Members,

this challenge is about enjoying Thanksgiving fully, without negative feelings the next morning.

Assignments:
-write a food plan on 23rd November for the next two days
-whatever fancy food you wish to eat, put that on your plan too
-follow your plan on 24th and 25th November, monitor in writing
-use your Beck skills to stay on track, wherever you are in the program (eat sitting down, slowly, noticing every bite... plan and monitor eating in writing ... respond to sabotaging thoughts)

Share your plans and results here!

There will be a similar challenge for Christmas days too.

Have a great day,
Kriszta

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings
