Thanks for the Challenge!! This was my first try and I have learned so much. I was amazed at the real number on my eating habits.

My Fitness may improve but right now I am happy about the new ideas.

Thanks again.

As I was tallying the points, I realised that some of you (if you've been adding up your own points) will have different totals than what I've listed.

That's because of the limits we had on the cardio (max. 30 points per day, max. 3 times a week, on your PRE-SELECTED days!) and strength (max. 5 points per category per day, max. 2 days per week!). And also because the macro-nutrient ranges needed to be met for each of carbs, fats and proteins every single day. My spreadsheet also did not give points if anyone went below 1000 mg of sodium - the parameters were 1,000 to 2,400 mg of sodium per day.

I know this challenge was nit-picky to track! Hope this clarifies things a teeny little bit!

Cheers,
Maya

And the results of the challenge are in!

Yes, I know it's technically not the 4th any more, but I've not been to bed yet, so I'm claiming creative license or something. :)

emoticon Our big winner on points is Mel (Melteague) with 420 points!

Mel put in a LOT of hours of exercise - that Masters' championship has obviously lit a fire under her! CONGRATULATIONS, Mel, now THAT's the competitive spirit!

In second place, we have DFR9179 with 330 points - another fabulous effort, congratulations!

Lisbeth04 brings home the bronze, with 310 points - way to go, Lisbeth!

And, coming right at her heels, a special mention to Jenn72(295 points) - you were SO close to 300 points!

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Only 8 of us actually completed the challenge:

MELTEAGUE
DFR9179
LISBETH04
JEAN1964
JAMIEHORN20
AVONWITHJENN
MEL122769
DSHRBURR4

CONGRATULATIONS to each of you for continuing through the entire 14 days. I know it must have been difficult to find the time to DO everything, and THEN to track all that detail!

Thank you for sticking with it through the end! :)

And WOW on those results - way to go, each and every one of you!

Cheers,
Maya

Jean: You asked "What do we do after this challenge?" ...

well, that's up to you. You can continue tracking your food and exercise, making sure to do some cardio and some strength a few times each week. And tracking your food will definitely help - I've found that I'm much less likely to gain weight if I am tracking.

No, it doesn't mean I don't gain, jut that I gain MORE if I don't track. :)

We'll do another challenge towards the middle of May ... please post any suggestions for what you'd like to see on that challenge. And in the meantime, continue eating healthy and exercising so you stay on track!

Cheers,
Maya

Um, just read Mel's question:

No tracking for today - yesterday was the last day of the challenge.

Just weigh in and post your final weight today.

Whee! Sorry to have disappeared on everyone like that, but I needed some mental health time. :) I had a great weekend of vegging out - gotta say that's NOT going to look good when I get on the scales.

Yes, today is final weigh-in! Get on those scales and report back.

I'll tally up the numbers and post the results by tonight!

THANKS, everyone, for playing! You all did a great job!

Cheers,
Maya

Ok, so I had a bad weekend...but that's ok. I am hoping it will turn around this week.
Is the challenge officially over now? I know the original post said Sunday, but the date said May 4th, which is today.
I gained 2.6 lbs, but lost 4.25 inches, so I can be happy with that.

Maya, my calorie range has changed too, but because of the challenge ( I think you mentioned we were to stay in the same range all the way through)...I have posted as if they are still the same ( does that make sense?)
exapmple:
yesterdays post for yesterdays fat % I was over in the challenge range, but still ok in my new calorie range...
I guess the new calorie range is because of the increased CARDIO ( ie 2 hours on cardio days)...

What should we do about that? Should I keep posting in the Challenge range as started on the first day?

OR
are we permitted to enter the new range???

Let us know , thanks
HOPE THE RAIN STAYS AWAY TODAY..we were suppossed to go on a picnic!

Okay, Maya -- I said there wasn't a DQ or BR for the 31c deal --- I didn't say there wasn't an icecream STORE! They've got a Braum's here - which actually has a mini GROCERY store attached with prices lower than Walmart! AND, of course, every flavor of icecream imaginable in half gallons for sale.
Oh, btw, that peanut butter fudge sundae about KILLED my stomach! I'm with your niece - I threw half of it out!

Maya- I will try to get caught up on posting tonight or tomorrow. My dad had surgery and I have been spending time at the hospital and haven't had time to log into SP (have been logging on my body bugg, so I do know where I am at calorie wise). Just wanted to let you know I haven't dropped off the face of the earth again!

They didn't have French Vanilla, and I was tempted to try the Maui Brownie. But I got ONE scoop. Of Rum'n'Raisin and high-tailed it out of there before I could stick my grubby little hand in my pocket and pull out extra change. :)

The kids? Don't ask. The older one went with her friends to the B-R less than half a block from home and got her "max" of 3 scoops and ate it all. Then we all piled into the van to go pick up the little guy ... and she got 3 scoops when we went with him to the B-R right by his school.

The 7-year-old finished barely ONE scoop before declaring he didn't feel too good, and the older one, also after about a third of the 3-scoop-melange, decided she wanted to throw up now. :) Didn't, but wanted to. So I told both of them they DIDN'T have to finish the ice cream (they normally have the "don't waste food" routine) ... you shoulda seen them perk up!

The 12-year-old dumped hers in the trash when we got home, the little guy is "saving" his - in the freezer. Who knows when he'll remember it again? He's definitely an "out of sight, out of mind" type of guy.

I think they BOTH learned that just because something is cheap (or free) doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy eating too much of it, even if it's delicious.

And yes, it WAS delicious. Not as good as rum-n-raisin anywhere in France (you can actually taste the rum and the raisins are PLUMP there), but pretty decent.

AND we all had a healhty dinner after. So that was good.

Yeah, I *knew* you all wanted all the details. NOT. Too bad. :)

Cheers,
Maya

No BR *or* DQ in this tiny town, so I'm saved! LOL
GREAT choice, Mel! Frozen yogurt is DELISH! That's what I get if they've got it in the Pralines and Cream flavor .. MMMmmm!
I'm lucky I don't have an ice cream scoop here at the hotel, otherwise I'd have bought some yesterday! Instead I settled for some new blue bunny brand yogurt bar things that SP blogged about last week. Haven't tried them yet!

Yes I am TOTALLY planning my snack, looked up the nutritional info and am having Dule de Leche ( one scoop only IN A CUP!)....
and it is totally within my ranges so I am ok with it....
I am going armed with JUST ENOUGH MONEY with the taxes so that I CANNOT GET MORE if I am tempted( we all know how the EYES like to make things look irrisistable)...

If they don't have that flavour I will go for Chocolate Trilogy... I don't usually Eat Ice cream at all , so this will really be a treat....I usually only have FROZEN YOUGURT or SORBET!

I am having a rest day today from exercise and I am finding it SOOO HARD to not jump on the treadmill, I know my muscles need the rest.....so I did some gardeing instead...lol

Enjoy the sunshine even if the breeze is chilly!
Maya you better check back after and CONFESS if you misbehave and I will do the same! That way we will not dare dissapoint , right?

ROTFLMAO MAYA! GOOD JOB on planning the "snack"! DS#2's favorite ice cream is french vanilla, also.
My "favorite" is pralines and cream - then rocky road - then butter pecan - then ... OH HECK! I'm "good" with ANY icecream (well, not cake batter ice cream or cookies & cream. YUCK)

How about you, Mel? Are you planning in your snack, too?

French Vanilla, if they have it. Plain vanilla if they don't.

And I had a HUGE salad for lunch (NO starches), so it fits beautifully in my calories for the day, AND I still have room for dinner after! :)

Me good. Me planned it. Me talk like a moron.

Yeah, Mel, I checked out their website and saw the 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. thing, and their per-customer limit.

Hmmm. HMMMMM! Think I should splurge on a B-R cone today? 31 cents can't be beat. And since they have a 3-scoop max, I could get a HUGE cone for a buck-ten or so (taxes, right?)

Okay. I'll be good. I'll go there *after 5 p.m.* and I'll tell the kids before we leave that, if I try to order MORE than ONE scoop, they can yell LOUDLY at me to ONLY have ONE scoop or I'll get FATTER. :)

They obviously LOVE the idea of embarrassing an adult, and I'm thinking the humiliation factor ought to kick in at that point! ;)

Let's see how it works, okay?

Cheers,
Maya

Jean, don't worry about the totals - the spreadsheet does that for me. Just put in the points. If I see something obviously "off" (like claiming 2 points when someone's exceeded the sodium limit), I'll drop you a sparkmail to double-check.

Yeah, I know it can be discouraging, but the point is, if we don't try to stay within the ranges, then we can't know whether staying in those ranges actually works. As for the points, they're just a bonus, is my opinion - it's more important that we try, and if we're *close* to the limits, even if over or under by a bit, then we're doing well on the whole.

(Talk about a run-on sentence there!)

The closest DQ is 30 miles away? How about the closest Baskin-Robbins? :D (Yeah, turns out it's the Baskin-Robbins that has the 31 cent promotion, and it's only today. I don't know if the same deal is even being offered TODAY at the US stores, or whether it's only a Canadian special!)

By the way, Jean, you're doing GREAT!!

Cheers,
Maya

Maya, I haven't been good keeping up with my daily points. Are you needing all of us to figure the totals? When I come so close on the "more" nutrition numbers, it is so hard not to count that. I try but some days to get those right I struggle. I am still learning about all the good things we can eat and still stay within range.

Oh, now that 1c extra, I'd really think twice about getting any scoops --- 31 cents is a GREAT price, and you are now armed with nutritional information!
No worries on ME craving icecream - DH took me out last night and I got a HUGE thing and it made me SICK - too sweet!!!! I should have stuck to MY guns and had an orange!!! LOL

Hello there , thanks for the info...I looked at the DQ info and nearly had a heart attack! It is really high in calories!!! wow!
The good news is that I was mistaken it is 31 cents a scoop night at BASKIN ROBBINS, tonight , not DQ!!!
So I got the info for them and they are way easier, because the portions are smaller and I am able to track it.- And I promise to only have ONE SCOOP!
I hope I am not making everyone crave ice cream now!!! sorry!

The problem with teas is that they dehydrate.
Nothing, absolutely NOTHING replaces pure, unadulterated water.
I, too, enjoy a cup of tea on occasion, but don't substitute it for water - I still get in my 20 cups water in addition to coffee/teas.
Maya drinks her water hot from the tap seeing as y'all are so cold up there in Toronto!

What about herbal tea or flavoured tea? Isn't that also really "flavoured water"...my problem is I prefer hot drinks, although I do drink my water, I also have a lot of black tea and herbal tea??/

on my exercise days I have no problem getting my water in , but my rest days are a challenge!~
any advice?

Jean - I use to think I was doing "okay" getting in maybe 4 cups water. I was also a Diet Dr. Pepper drinker (maybe 6 cans a day). After my journey here on SP began and I started reading articles, I realize that I had been chronically dehydrated for a LONG time. SOME people say that you can get the "water" you require from fruits/veggies/juices. Sorry, but with everything I've read, the only true source of water ... is WATER! Fruits are sugars. Veggies are carbs. Juices are sugars - more than you realize.
Today I drink at least 20-8 ounce cups of water each day. I'm not telling YOU to drink that much and sure not saying for you to jump from 8 cups to 12 cups overnight as I know it takes time to adjust.
The "rule of thumb" is to drink half your weight in ounces of water daily. So, for example, if you weigh 200 pounds, your body REQUIRES 100 ounces, or 12-1/2 cups water. And that is to simply function. Once you start talking, thinking, moving around, exercising you begin to require more water. For every 15 minutes of sweat you lose a cup of water. So it's not only important to remember to hydrate, but also to REhydrate throughout the day.
Sorry for the long reply, but you hit on my FAVORITE subject! LOL

Jean, way to go on the strength workout!! Your body is going to thank you for that.

As for water, I also carry a 24 oz. water bottle to work. I take a drink when I'm thristy, bored, hungry or whatever. I usually get 9 cups of water while at work. Just keep the water beside you at all times. You'll be surprised how quickly it will add up.

Jean, good for you on the strength training!

I get my water in by using a 24 oz. water bottle at work. I keep it filled and usually go through at least 2 a day (that's 6 glasses right there!). I drink a bottle of water (16 oz.) before I go to work and one when I come home, with dinner. Any extra is just bonus! :)

HI Everyone - We are getting close to the finish line. I finally got in the Strength points yesterday. I only did lower body and can feel them this morning. I guess I really need to keep those up and start on the rest of this body.

Thanks for all the support. I love reading everyones message, I realize I am not the only one who gets off track sometimes.

Dang. Everyone's been busy chatting and I've been MIA! Sorry!

Wound up having a completely unforeseen busy weekend, and today was hectic too! I'm playing catchup on the posting myself - I don't think I actually managed to stay in my sodium ranges more than maybe ONE day out of the past four, but I'll know more when I finish logging all the food I ate.

I did get in a fair amount of exercise, but I'm feeling really sluggish, so I suspect if I were to weigh in today, I'd be weeping!

Grr. Gotta pay more attention!

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!

Cheers,
Maya

Sorry Maya - I have been out of pocket all weekend - I will try to get caught back up tomorrow. Sorry, but I did not track this weekend (not enough hours in the day) but I did get plenty of exercise. I am sore all over and sunburned too.

God Bless you - Sheri

Hello all...
Ready for another week???

My sodium was out of range today...quite a bit, and I am not sure what it was exactly, will have to go back and check everything individually to see just what it was that did it!

I hope to do better this week....

Have a great night all and only one week to go ...looking forward to seeing everyone's weight loss at the end on May 4th.....

YOU CAN DO IT!!! YES YOU CAN!!!

We went to a special dinner and sneak peak for a Nebraska Educational TV last night. I went completely off schedule but I had a good time and didn't go way overbroad. Hope that is OK for me, mentally.

Today I am back and strong.

Has been a fun week with the challenge - the sodium thing has been a problem until today - this is the first day I have been under 2400. It is hard to believe it is that high every day!!

Hello team!!!! I just wanted to see how everyone was doing and feeling with the challenge so far. It's almost been one week and man that sodium thing is so hard to maintain. I don't think I have gotten any points for that one. LOL! Anyone else having that issue?

I just realised I posted having done 73 min cycling today , instead of 37min! sorry....lol...
Not that it counts for points because today was not a cardio day for me...but I did not want you thinking I took THAT long to get around my little tiny Lake ...lol.....

Goodnight all,
I am clearly way too tired,,,have a great weekend.

You rode around the lake? I'm envious, Mel! I am remembering back to a couple of GREAT early morning jogs around Lake Ontario (all the way south of Lakeshore to almost Islington) last summer - GORGEOUS trail!

Have a great weekend. And yeah, imagine us all peeking over your shoulder and then reaching over and pushing things back OFF your plate at the pot-luck! :)

Cheers,

Victrola, that's fine - I'll make the adjustment, thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, that sodium thing REALLY sneaks up on you - I'm finding that unless I eat home-cooked (preferably cooked by ME!), I get way too much sodium. After almost a year of cooking with very little salt, I can now FEEL my body getting dehydrated on days when I decide to indulge in restaurant fare or fast food - I still don't do the frozen dinners or cured meat sandwiches. :D

Seems to me our bodies are smart if we LET 'em be smart!

And hey, everyone, hope you have a FABULOUS weekend. The forecast for Toronto is WARM weather. With a couple of thundershowers thrown in, but I can deal with that! :D

Cheers,
Maya

Sorry to all - in my post of stats today I listed my calories as 1200-1600 instead of 1200-1400 so I need to have 5 points taken away!! Can't read my own writing!!
It is still surprising on the sodium - Am trying though!!

Jean, it's about challenging yourself - you do what YOU find challenging. The points are just added incentive. :)

Mel, I'm up in Woodbridge - lived downtown at the Harbourfront until a few weeks ago. :) Yeah, Richmond Hill is almost-neighbour-land!

At least it didn't rain *much* today! I was able to get in an outdoor walk. Yay!

Team - I know I won't keep up with the exercise points but I like the challenge. I haven't done any strength but I spent 1 1/2 hrs picking up rocks, put in bucket and then emptying them on the fence line. One of our farms has NEW rock every spring, I feel like God gives them to us.

I'm having a good time on this.

Whee! We had 16 initial posts! That's a good number - almost half of us that signed up have already posted for yesterday.

We are, however, missing initial posts from quite a few participants ... just thought I'd do the reminder thing. I know some of you will be traveling, but I don't know about all the rest. :)

Will the following teamies post ASAP, please, on the stats thread? Then I can have a nicely filled in spreadsheet without all the sad empty rows!

CAROLINAVEGA

WINTERSTIC
KASSIDY5

I'll follow up with your friendly reminder emails, too, just to be on the safe side.

I'm loving the amount of cardio going on, but only a few have done any strength so far - I didn't do any either, yesterday, but I'm doing mine today, a full-body workout.

Now I'd better send out that reminder SparkMail before I forget!

Cheers,
Maya

Oh, another thing.

The Cardio days.

Please state what THREE days of the week you are COMMITTING to your minimum of 20 minutes of cardio.

If you don't do cardio on any of those promised days, you get 0 points. But also, if you do cardio on a *different* day that wasn't on YOUR list-of-three, you get zero points.

Yeah, tricky. Yeah, mean. Yeah. Okay. :)

Cheers,
Maya

I hear ya, Mel. We've got rain up here in Toronto, too! I'd love to see the sun shining instead.

Jenn, I didn't chane my carb settings. Just decided to stay to the lower end or even below - yes that means fewer points for the challenge. :)

Oh, I've noticed that the fat/carb/protein thing seems to be confusing ... to clarify:
- you must have *at least* the minimum of each of the three, and *at most* the maximum of each of the three to earn your 5 points. So, if you got carbs and fats between the high and low marks, but your protein was below the minimum, you won't get yor five points.

I know there are reasons to eat "off-recommended-range" (I'm going to find it hard to stay within my recommended carb range myself - I always either overdo or underdo it!), so I won't harp on it tooooo much, but my spreadsheet simply won't give you the points if you're out of range. :)

Cheers,
Maya

Muahahaha. Sorry, everyone. That's what happens when you try to answer intelligently when you're half asleep!

Okay, NOT a blonde moment. *I* was the one with the brain fart.

Cardio: 5 points for every 20 minutes, max of 30 points per day. :) AND a max of 3 days per week for points. :)

SO I guess the actual max per week, if you did 120 minutes three times that week, would be ... 90 points.

If you do cardio on more than 3 days, we count only 3 days. And to Mel's question on the not-quite-20 minute thing: we're increasing by 5 points at a time, rather than figuring out percentages, so if you're doing 90 minutes and want a couple extra points, I'd suggest a ten-minute cooldown cardio thingy - to get it to 100 minutes.

Now, I hope I've removed my foot from my mouth properly. :)

But I also suspect my foot will be RIGHT BACK in there pretty soon - like the next time someone asks a question! :)

Cheers,
Maya
