No weight gained over the holidays. Looking forward to downward movement on the scale with the start of a new calendar year.

12/18/16 - I'm at + 2.6

My son and his wife are staying with us for the next few weeks until they can move into their new home - so I've had to fix more delicious meals.

Okay Nancy, this happens. I have a few questions for you. What did you do in the days before weighing in? Was there a party? Did you go out to eat? Did you eat things that are extra salty? Have you had enough water to drink?

Do your best. On "non-celebration days" be sure to log and measure ALL food. here is a link to a blog I wrote last week.

You'll be fine as long as you don't use this gain to keep "breaking eggs".

I started at 196.2 on December 1, 2016
I would be so happy if I can stay this weight for the next 22 days until December 31.

If I don't want to pack on the pounds again I have to prepare my food ahead of time so I can eat the same breakfast and lunch everyday. Then I have to stop eating after 7:00 p.m.

I'm starting at 0 on December 9, 2016

I am already -1 lb since before T-Day!!!

Holiday hint: Take time to really taste and enjoy the food you are eating. Don't just shovel it in your face!! You may find that the first taste is the best... so why eat more?

I'm starting at 0 and will give a + or - every week. For instance. If I gain one lb. I will post
"+1". If I lose the same "-1". I'm hoping to get to New Years day to be at least a 0 and not be a +.

Holiday drinking hint: trade in the eggnog and rum!! It is between 450 and 500 calories, mostly fat, for ONE cup (That's 8 ounces total with 1 1/2 of that being rum).

Pick your favorite flavor of vodka, add it to flavored sparkling water and add fruit... Less than 150 calories for a 1 1/2 oz vodka. Be aware that some companies hide sugar and fake sugar in some sparkling water/ soda water/ "fizzy water". Read your labels!!

My favorite is Indio Spirits Blood Orange vodka, with lemon/lime sparkling soda and a lime wedge.

I also will sip a nice single malt Scotch, neat, and have a glass of water on the side.

Patriots, Red Sox, Keto, Zumba, Highland Games are my passions. I may live in Oregon but my heart still roots for Boston!!

33 Days. 4 weeks. 2017 is coming up, FAST. I have to admit, the last few months I've slacked off a bit. I could give up and wait till New Years for the next "Resolution", but I don't want to go backwards. I don't think that you do either!!

There are many contradictory studies on Holiday weight gain. Is it 2 lbs? 7 - 10 lbs? Anything in between? The one thing that most studies do agree on is that the weight that is put on in that time period my never come off.

I put this challenge out to you, Patriots fans.
I Challenge you (and me!) to get to January 1, 2017 and NOT gain weight.

The following tips are condensed from an article on WebMD. I have included another link with more hints on how to survive the Holidays.
www.webmd.com/diet/features/s
urviving-
the-holidays#1

1. Trim back the trimmings. To shave calories, go easy when adding nuts, cheese, cream sauces, gravy, butter, and whipped cream. Trim calories wherever you can so you leave the party feeling satisfied, but not stuffed,

2. Wear snug clothes and keep one hand busy. When you wear snug-fitting attire, chances are you'll be too busy holding in your stomach to overeat. Hold a drink in your dominant hand so it won't be so easy to grab food,

3. Chew gum. When you don't want to eat, pop a piece of sugarless gum into your mouth. This works well when you're cooking or when you're trying not to dive into the buffet.

4. Be a food snob. If you don't love it, don't eat it. Scan the buffet for foods you truly treasure and skip the everyday dishes that are available all year long. Go ahead and indulge in your personal holiday favorites, then find a seat and, slowly and mindfully, savor every mouthful.

5. NO SKIPPING MEALS. Always eat normally on the day of a party. Start with a nourishing breakfast, have a light lunch, then a small snack or salad shortly before the event.

6. Check it out. First things first. When you arrive at the party, grab a sparkling water with a twist, and wait at least 30 minutes before eating.

7. Add fun and games. Take the focus off food and getting family and friends more active during holiday parties. Think football, horseshoes, badminton, sledding, ice skating, or building snowmen. Indoors, most homes now have Wii or other gaming system. Getting Grandpa up to do Dance Dance Revolution can add to the laughter and calorie burn!!

8. Alternate alcohol with non-alcoholic beverages. Cut your alcohol calories in half by alternating water or seltzer between alcoholic beverages.

9. Skip the appetizers. If you need a little nibble before the meal, go for the veggies, fruit, salsa, or a small handful of nuts.

10. Limit the variety. Put only two items on your plate when you go to the food table. Return as many times as you like, but only take two items each time.

Now, I'm not saying that we should all stick to eating carrots when there's YUMMY food around. I'm just thinking that we've all worked WAY too hard to lose weight and get healthy to throw away that time and energy.

Here's the rules:
a. Post at least once weekly to this Challenge:

b. Please reply to this message with either your beginning weight or start at 0 and give +/-

c. Give an update to how you are doing, share a secret with the rest of us as to how you will eat, move better during the holidays.

d. Stay active!! especially when stuck inside due to weather!!

Be healthy. Be active. Enjoy!!
