we had a set of Corelle in our motor home, now that is what I use, small bowls, plates, salad plates, even small cups, but that i what I use, and my husband likes the larger plates, although I should sneak him meals on the smaller ones,

We have to make up the fajita at the counter and then put it on the plate so it fits.

Just measured the ones we use now. We have 8.5 inch (salad plates) and 7.5 inch (bun plates) and they seem fine. The 7.5 inch are the ones we use the most. Having a plateful of food seems satisfying. Some foods do not fit on like tortillas.

I purchased new plates this winter and it took me a while, because I was looking for smaller plates, no bigger than 10". I could not believe the difficultly I had with this. Well, I also wanted matching bowls (smaller also), and salad plates. I finally found a set at Kohls.
10" dinner plates, 4' salad plates and small bowls. We donated all the other 12.5" plates, 12.5"!! What sparked this for me was when we moved last summer, our plates barely fit in the cabinets. The house was only 18 months old. So I immediately went and got a tape measure and realized we had big plates.
I have to say, we still only eat one plate for dinner (lunch or whatever) and none of us realize a difference while eating.
So I'm doing well for the 9" in plate. I use my 10" one and am mindful to reduce even more for the challenge.

What I own are big dinner plates. So my food end up looking lonely!

Just downsized all dinnerware. Now I only have dinner plates with 10" plates with 2" border (square plates) and smaller plates. Bowls are 2c and 1c. Very helpful with portion control.

I am using an 8 1/2" paper plate and it has a rim. It was really hard to put my chicken, 2 c. of green beans, and cucumbers on that plate but I got it to fit. emoticon

We tend to use the smaller plates more often. I even purchased a dinner set with 1 cup bowls (have you measured your bowls lately?) The only drawback to using the smaller bowls was that once we had a cup of fruit in the bowl, there was no room for the cereal.....oh well...

I just measured and my salad plates that I use for most every meal are 8 inches including the rim so that the eating/actual plate area is 5 1/2 inches. I rarely use the big dinner plates.

As a child, our plates were probably 9 in. My dinnerware was custom made by a local potter so my plates are 9" & I have no larger plates. Most days, though, I eat using a 6 in. plate that I bought from her at an arts festival.

In my family we routinely eat on our salad plates and rarely use our 12" dinner-sized plates. Sure helps with space since we have a large table! It also helps the food not look so "lonely." But occasionally, if eating something saucy (like salad, etc.) the sauce gets into other foods -- those are the occasional times when I use a bigger plate.

There's also a trend towards humungous cups/glasses -- most of the ones you can buy are pint sized or larger. We got 10 oz drinking glasses from Crate and Barrel that seem much more manageable. Although this doesn't matter as much since we mostly drink calorie-free beverages like iced tea or sparkling water (or water).

Do you remember as a kid when your family had a `normal` sized dinner plate.

How are you doing with eating off a 9 inch plate. Does it seem to be the right size.

Do you have tips to share with us
