I define house work as exercise. When you constant moving while working. Walking around the mal is moving just like shopping.

It took me time to gain this weight and it will take time to get it off.

I can do it....

Yes, I do intentional exercises every day. For the challenge I record walking, gym and strength training and those alone total more than 120 minutes per day. If I were to record yard work, gardening, heavy outdoor jobs, like fixing fences/ corrals or heavy housecleaning I would have 8 hours of exercise almost every day!!! AND I'm suppose to be retired!!

Have a lovely day everyone.

The only exercise that I count off my fitbit is my "active minutes" which means I must move for at least 10 min consecutively before I record that time on a team. I do intentionally get in walking steps all day long since I donít really go anywhere. I also count shopping/walking as active minutes since I only go maybe once a week. Cleaning gets recorded only for the time my heart rate goes above 120. I also hit the activity timer on my fitbit when I know I am going to be active for over 5 min so it will record my average and maximum heart rates and can see if I am working out with enough intensity.

I am walking Daisy every day and adding distance about every third day. I do Yoga, strength exercises and the stationary bike. Today was my very first ever day at the gym. I am learning the equipment one piece at a time. It was fun. As far as other activities, I do include gardening because that is pretty active and my heart rate is up. I'm sorry to say I very seldom do HEAVY housework!

I track walks that extend past 10 minutes--we have quite a few up and down hills here so I know my heart gets going on those. I definitely track mowing and gardening--which I do a fair amount of--and for fairly long periods of time. I track any exercise and/or stretch time that extends beyond 10 minutes.

I don't count my general day to day activities such as cooking, sweeping, dusting, etc. I do count planned activities (when I count walking it is uninterrupted bouts usually on the treadmill), weight lifting, dancing, calisthenics, etc. If I took say, a 5 mile hike, I would definitely count it, or if I do a big job out of the ordinary for me, I will count that. The day to day things I do are done even if I don't schedule any planned time. I feel like those things are included in my Basal Metabolism count. They are like breathing to me. If I didn't do those things, I would be a slug emoticon . Am I doing it correctly?

I only count intentional exercise. I count my steps over the whole day, but I use another app to only track my intentional exercise which it then posts to Sparkpeople.

I walk 2 hours a day, an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.
I keep track of my steps which are averaging 20,000 a day.

So cool to include so much in the fitness plan. I never pay any attention of anybody's calorie tracker for fitness. I don't think any of it works. I definitely won't use it for an excuse to eat candy or cookies etc. Everything has to fit in my tracker plan.

My current plan doesn't include "intentional exercise" because I committed to 30 days of healthy eating before adding intentional exercise. July happens to be the month I add exercise to intentional eating, so July WILL have intentional exercise including yoga, walking at lunch, and some exercise videos. I may even try water aerobics.

Yes, at least 60 minutes on the treadmill 5 days a week at 2.5 mph., some strength work every day, no set amount, stretches every day.

Goal of 10,000 steps on fitbit every day and yes, I know that all of that is not "intentional" activity but if I walk to the bank, around the block or to the refrigerator......it is intentional! LOL

If I didn't "intend" to move, then I wouldn't.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Yes. Hubby and I try to walk in the evenings as often as possible. I hate housework and avoid it like the plague, so when I do it, it is definitely intentional. I hit it hard and am very strenuous about it so that I can put it off as long as possible again. emoticon Actually, when I'm doing typical cleaning, I vamp it up with as many strength training techniques as I can think of, like doing calf rocking and heel raises instead of standing still, and marching or dancing instead of walking. I do whatever I can to make it more fun and up the calorie burn. I push mow, which is cardio and strength training for me since I'm not in that great of shape. Other gardening / yard work really gets my heart rate up too, so I figure it counts as well.

I have to have "intentional exercise time" of walking, aerobics, and weights beyond my normal daily routines or I do not seem to make progress.

Does it really have playing an instrument for burning calories? As a professional musician, I spend hours a day doing that but I don't think I lose many calories from it!

I count the gym & outside walking & yoga as exercise, not everyday activities & go by the rates on the gym equipment as Spark peoples calories burned are much higher then what I do burn, It states more calories burned walking then gym, it is wrong.

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon racking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.
