I know not to use Spark's exercise minutes to count up my team exercise. I keep track my exercise myself, so that the exercise points for this team, don't get inflated. I do walk intentionally and will usually start my activity watch for the walking indoors or outdoors activity. I set my watch for when I do dvd activities and when I do machine activities. All those things are intentional.

I am in the process of switching gyms to save on money, I have been a member of my current gym for a very long time, but I haven't been in 2-3 months except maybe twice, so instead of paying an outrageous amount every month, I am going to go to my city's fitness place that includes the pool where i take classes and I can swim and it is cheaper for both my husband and I to join there than where I am now. I will have this all done by Saturday.

I intentionally do workouts after work, but lately i have been getting up from my desk to walk around the schools to get more steps than i normally would have. these walks usually take about 15 min, so i add that to my time.

I'm only going to stick to tracking intentional exercise like I did before. I am on my feet all day at work, but I don't track it, because to me it's not intentional enough nor gets my heart rate up enough usually to count as exercise.

I have a fitbit and I write down my mileage before I go out the door to walk. When I get back, I check my fitbit and write down the ending mileage. Then on the Fitness Tracker page, I click the mileage tab and enter my minutes and miles. It calculates the calories burned.

Once a week I organize and do some cleaning of a home and it takes me three hours. I get a massive workout going up and down stairs, with a weak laundry and I count this as heavy cleaning. It’s intense and takes me a while to cool down in my 20 min car ride home

I dunno what to make of this. I organize my days so that I walk 8 to 10 miles each day. It's intentional insofar as I am choosing to do things like walk to the train station a half mile away instead of the one nearest my house. But it's not beyond my normal, since I'm shooting for a lifestyle that keeps me healthy and so my normal is to walk most everywhere. That doesn't count as exercise?

I learned that most chores don't raise my heart rate to my aerobic zone, so I don't count them in the challenge.

I use my Polar heart rate monitor for most exercise sessions, so I know I'm not "cheating" on the minutes. The only exceptions are swimming and an occasional "active rest" walk.

I log intentional exercise and extra mins I may get in at the end of it. I only log housework when washing walls and moving furniture and then I don't log it til I hit the 50 min mark and I have to feel I have moved fast enough for me to consider it cardio. Weed eating I do all by hand and I have the same rule of 50 mins and I have to feel it qualifies as cardio. I will have to look over the cardio workout ideas. Maybe I could relax the 50 min rule since I based it on making myself taking a 10 min water break every hour

After reading the links there are other things I can log and my 50 min rule could be dropped.

I am re-writing my 'intentional exercises' in order to 'qualify' for the Team fitness minutes..

I will find them through the fitness tracker library

Some of my activities are not 'liked' by a select few and are not considered exercise.. so I will do other stuff to make it count!

I used to let my Fitbit track my exercise. Last year I realized how stupid this was. I went from 90+ minutes a week of intentional exercise to 90+ minutes a week of sometimes intentional and sometimes just because the day got busy. I now enter all of my exercise manually and it is only what is intentional.

I only count minutes from intentional exercise (so it doesn't include housework, etc.) Most of my intentional exercise will include either walking outdoors or indoors on the treadmill, exercise DVD's, strength training and some stretching.

I only include intentional exercise.

Any exercise I get because I have to do it, I do not count. I did all that stuff and still gained weight these last few years. So anything above and beyond what I normally would do, is the only thing I count. I do not include doing laundry, cleaning the house, working at work for my job...these are all things I do/did while I gained all my weight. So I only track the extra walking for intentional purposes only.

I have a stationary bike in the office at home, and that counts, but I don't count the time I spend walking to work from my far-away parking spot, etc. During the next challenge, I plan to up my daily commitment to 30 minutes from the 10 it was in the last challenge. I weigh 30+ pounds less now, so it should be easier, right?

My fitbit counts all my steps, but only counts continuous activity such as my walk toward activity minutes. I do 3-4 miles a day of a brisk walk and usually get 50-60 minutes of activity time. I add my stretching (5 minutes) that I always do after walking.

I do strength training 3 times a week at a 60 minute class that includes aerobic warm up (10 minutes) strength and 10 minute stretch and yoga. I set this up in my groups tab.

I do a thoroug cleaning of my house once a week, it takes me 2 1/2 hours to go from top to bottom. I count 60 minutes of heavy housework toward my activity minutes. I work up a sweat especially doing the vacuming and floor scrubbing.

I work in my garden several times a week in the summer and this time of year. Once I get out there I'm usually good for 2-3 hours of work. Again I only put it in as 60 minutes gardening.

Why do I only count 60 minutes? Well I guess if it's something I have to do I'm not sure it counts as intentional. But I figure if I've worked hard enough to be sweating it should count as something.

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon Tracking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Get out and have fun today! emoticon emoticon emoticon
