You have a point! Don"t think I want to eat something without even knowing what category it fits in. emoticon

I don't eat nearly as much processed food as I used to. And I am more prone to put something back if the label if it has ingredients that I can't pronounce. If I don't know what it is, why would I want to put it in my body? I'm having a tough time teaching my teenager these principles as she is a junk food junkie. She has gotten better, but she's not one to try new things, especially if it's "healthy."

I am a scratch cook. I very rarely eat things that are boxed or pre-made. I will not eat fat free or low calorie anything. I avoid chemicals and things I can not pronounce.

I was really wanting a dessert last night and the chocolate chips in the freezer were calling my name. I thought what I would do is make one of my low cal slushies that often satisfy that chocolate craving - one TBL of unsweetened cocoa is 10 calories. Add with a bit of stevia and a few drops of almond (or vanilla) extract to grated ice and water and I have a cold chocolate drink that satisfies. But I had just put water on for herbal tea and before I'd finished that, I'd forgotten about the chocolate. :)

"One man's junk is another man's treasure." Perhaps we need a different term for appealing food that potentially harms us.

For someone struggling with diabetes, a treat with artificial sweeteners may not be junk. For someone like me with FODMAP sensitivities, artificial sweeteners are a huge no-no, so even a piece of sugar-free gum is junk.

It's a bit like the word "diet," It can mean all the foods, healthful or unhealthful, that we actually consume, or it can mean a regulated plan based upon any given attributes: calories, nutrients, sources, etc.

We have attended several Mended Hearts conferences where we have had doctor's talk to us about diet. They mention if you read the label and there are more than 5 ingredients, you probably should not eat it. If there are words you cannot pronounce, you probably should not eat it. If the food comes to you through the car window, you probably should not eat it. I would consider all of these items junk food.

sometimes it is better to eat the full fat or sugared food, than those with other ingredients. Sometimes foods that substitute sugar, have added fat to make up for the taste.

I know that I will not substain a diet that forbids all but fresh foods, I know that I 'want' junky crap foods, and that I often don't feel like fixing real food. My problem is more control over the amounts of these I eat. I've unsuccessfully tried 'rules' like no junk until you eat fresh first, but all in all, I've come to accept that feeling totally deprived isn't the way for me either. Not that I've found the way yet:(

It won't work unless I do!

I try to avoid most processed foods and rarely even go down the center aisles of the store - choosing instead the meats, freggies, and such.

i dont eat anything processed. if it has more than a couple ingredients, or something i cant pronounce, i dont eat it.

Someone asked about sugar free. kind of easy list..if the sweetener starts with mal, DONT EAT IT.
(Malitol and Maltodextrin. both bad.

there are some natural sweeteners that are fine for you
erythritol
allulose
stevia
monkfruit.
they are all natural, and dont cause an insulin response.

@4CONNIESHEALTH Exactly! I am of the thought if it's got fake ingredients it's junk. If your conscience says it's junk, it's junk.

Raw almonds are one of my healthy snack foods. 7 are 40 calories. Drinking water is helping.

I have the same issue with sugar free foods. Is it good or bad? I have sugar free coffee creamer and is it better for me or not? How about sugar free sweetener, candies and Ice cream. Even though it has no sugar and therefor less calories, it does have carbs and chemicals. Which is better? If I have real coffee creamer it is healthier, but then it also is more like candy which is bad. This has always been an obstacle for me. I try to cut out everything but then I'm not living, I'm on a DIET!!!!

My favorite quote from this week's challenge details written by our awesome Challenge Creator, KALISWALKER is,
emoticon "If you have to ask is this junk food it probably is!"
Someone asked, "Is a Fiber One Brownie considered junk food"? How much nutritional value does that brownie have? If it has nutritional value what is the source of that nutrition? I bought those brownies before, once. I was dumbstruck when I found one in the back of my cupboard that had to be at least 6 months old. As I was getting ready to throw it in the trash my curiosity was piqued so I opened it and took a bite. I was amazed that it was still as fresh as the first one out of the box. It still had the same cardboard-like taste too. I hate to waste food, but it did go in the trash. I never bought them again. That's one of my junk food stories. I have many.

What are some healthy substitutes you all use to stay away from junk? I like KALISWALKERS pickle substitute. emoticon
