POTRIDGE, Why freeze beans? Beans aren't a specialty item where you'll go weeks or months without using them. Put the cooked beans in water and put them in your fridge. They'll keep for weeks but realistically, you'll use them long before that, no?

PS: You wrote "Took forever." I can't give you useful advice from hearing that kind of language. I soak them overnight, rinse, boil for 40-45 minutes. Done.

I cooked my first dry beans on the stove. Took forever. Then froze them. I would pour them into dishes that I was making. Last time I made them, I used my Instapot and then froze. When I went to use them they were frozen into one big ball. Any ideas as to how to freeze them in a big freezer bag so that I can just use what I want and put back in the freezer? I had to defrost all of them and hope I can use them before they go bad!

With COVID, I'm home all the time so preparing dried beans are no problem. Now that I've become used to how easy prep is (and not as heavy as cans to schlep home from the store), I plan to give the leftover cans in the back of my cupboard to a food drive.

PS: You cook pinto beans for 4 hours, CD? After soaking overnight, I cook them 45 minutes. Maybe you're not soaking them?

It depends on the bean. Pinto and cranberry beans, lentils, and navy beans I buy dry. But black and kidney beans I buy canned.

Canned....because I am lazy, I don't prep well in advance, & I would forget about soaking the beans.

I like dried beans best. I've gotten into the habit of preparing them every week and like to have cornbread or tostada shells with them, and chopped onions and bell peppers.

Canned. Because I know me. I'm not going to think enough in advance to soak them overnight.

Dry. Cheaper.
Soak overnight..or even during day and cook in evening/morning-
Put in crock pot/instant pot and done.
Plus I can batch cook so I have them ahead of time...also they taste better-esp with a bay leaf /spices during cooking and I can control the sodium better than cans.

It really depends on what I am making. I use each for different things.

I love dried beans. I make a pot of bean every 4 days. I usually alternate between black beans and pinto beans, because this is what my mom and I prefer on our tostadas. I have a pressure cooker I use called an InstantPot. I just throw in the dried beans (rinsed), veggie broth, spices, and mirepoix from Trader Joes. It takes a couple of hours to cook because the InstantPot has to pressurize and depressurize and I cook them under pressure for 45 minutes. I don’t have to soak the beans and I don’t have to monitor the InstantPot, it has the convenience of a crockpot except much faster. My mom says the tostadas I make are the best ever, and they have no salt.
