OK, got the test run in. 250 paired steps (250 left, 250 right), 12 minutes, ridiculous heart rate. My goal will be upping steps to 1250 at the same rate of steps per minute (or better) with lowered maximum heart rate. I'll be trying to get in as much as I can during the week but will only post weekly results. I must have pretty good cardio-vascular, my recovery rate is such that I should be able to go over my max heart rate in spurts like this. Hammies- not so much, definitely feeling the last 30 or so reps.

Carol- there are lots of sand hikes around here (heck- it's a big old sandbar) and across the bay there is a sand hill, better than 100 yds up and steep enough that most of it requires hands to stabilize the climb. Awesome! Do that a few times with kids who have boundless energy. Even better- the 30 foot steps coming down!

The stepper has an 18" throw and multiple settings for resistance by moving the hydraulic cylinder in or out on the step. Very old school in keeping with the rest of my little circuit trainer (bought in the early 90s).

Good glute work outs are always worthwhile. I'll have to look that piece of equipment up. Since I'm a Cal gal most of my work outs are outside except for the early morning thing I do every day. We have soft sand hills for our glute work outs and oh man are they tough. Ever walk 5 miles in hilly sand?

Thanks all for ideas. I loved the snowshoeing... I'm a flatland waterboy, not Jeremiah Johnson (it was such a visual in my head). No gym, all at home.

I think I'm going to tackle my hydraulic stepper for February. It's more like wall climbing than an elliptical. It is the one piece of equipment that has taxed me in whatever level of fitness I've been in. I'm a bit leary as my heart rate always shoots with it. I'll do a test run this weekend for a baseline in keeping the rate reasonable and a program for the month. Upside? Great glutes and reduction of the last of those stubborn love handles. I WANT to complete that swimmers taper.

I guess this topic is cool to me...

Goals don't have to be only fitness related.

Maybe there is some goal that can help make the other ones easier to reach.

One goal that is my top goal every day is to sleep. If I don't sleep right I don't eat right, I can't workout hard, and I can not think efficiently.

Maybe there is something like that for others too.

Goriana - Tranpoline work outs are fun and very good for you. I taught trampoline for ... gosh, I'm not sure how many years and I loved teaching it because I got such a great work out. Even the little trampolines have super beneficial properties to the work out.

Jon - I forget, do you belong to a gym or are your work outs all at home? You're so cold there, what about snowshoeing?

I second what RJ said. Trying something new or fun keeps things interesting. In the past I tried trapeze and acqua biking. This year I might try aerial yoga or trampoline aerobics. Dance and martial arts are another kind of fitness that might be fun...and ice skating.

those are once in a season kind of things...

on a weekly basis I try a new exercise or a new route or a new recipe or even do my routine in a different order or at a different level or with a friend. Anything to make it different works for me.

Hello everybody

My race schedule for next year has been on hold pending the final word on the new job. I finally found out and was able to pen out my races for this year. My daily goals are my training goals and sticking with my nutrition. would love to have a forum to post them. I can't check in twice a day but now that things are shaking out after the holidays, I can check in weekly.

Jon--You could have a goal of trying something completely new weekly, biweekly or monthly...I don't know you very well but things that come to mind...go to a climbing gym once, sign up for a walking tour of something, do a different youtube workout once a week, sign up for an obstacle race, running race, bike race, there's even a charity stationary bike event (http://www.fatcyclist.com/2013/04/11/the-
2013-100-miles-of-nowhere-plan-your-ma
dness/ . Also, one of the funniest blogs I've every read). Just some ideas. I find that trying something completely new is refreshing even if i go back to my routine.

What else do you like to do Jon? I can't stand ST myself, so I really don't have any suggestions.

This challenge will focus on daily "get things done" goals, I think. Many different categories, not just workouts, although those will also be included.

I really like that idea too. Spark's front page has something along those lines, like 8 glasses of water, 5 fruits/veggies, sleep, etc. Maybe I set up my goals to show that way, I don't know. I bet I did.

Regardless, having those small goals and meeting them every day is very motivating. I like that idea.

I'd participate in that!

Ideas of goals are just like I posted above, and maybe 30 minutes of cardio, 15 minutes of stretching, etc.

That's a great idea Goriana - I can do 24 hours at a time. I'm in! Shall we post it as a new challenge with a February heading?

Oh, ok, Goriana... I'm hatching an idea.

Maybe pick from a list of goal categories each day and post at least 2 or 3, then check back at the end of the day if you made your goal or not. You can switch categories every day if you like.

How does that sound?

Need ideas for February then. I like how Kourtney outlines every step for every day. I don't think I can do that for a whole month though. Maybe for a week at a time. My schedule has gotten fairly unpredictable though. What other ideas do you all have?

I just saw this thread....

I was on a team once where we posted daily goals. Everyone selected their own goals. Some had only one or two, some had a long list. In any case, it was fun to go back at the end of the day and brag with the 'goal met' emoticon. It got me a little further than I would have on my own...

I actually managed to get in 8000 yards over 3 swims last week. It helps that our weather is more normal now for an Ohio winter -- in the 20s instead of subzero! Being that cold makes it really hard to want to get wet, even if it's indoors and heated. I'm up to 15,750 for the month. Not near what it has been in previous months, but at least I'm swimming, right?

How about February? Is anyone game for another month challenge of some sort? Come on folks, I'm having trouble being creative here....

Well, we went into the deep freeze and I was totally not motivated to go out in the cold to get to the pool, so I didn't get in my three swims for this past week. I did go today though, for 3200 yards.

I'm hoping to get there again Sunday and either Monday or Tuesday

My goals this week:

Drink sufficient water every day
Walk on treadmill 45 minutes Monday and Wednesday
Ride on Thursday

Simple start!!

I'll also think about some kind of competition, but now that it's already the 6th, I'll probably wait until February!!

My first week was far from perfect too, but I did swim.

2000 yards on Friday
2550 yards on Saturday

Goal for next (this?) week is to swim three days, at least 7500 yards total.

Heather - I REALLY like the idea of a competition!!! Not sure who had the time to run it (you volunteering? :-P) but it would be fun!

My first week was far from perfect, but let's focus on successes:
- I swam
- I did both home body weight workouts
-I tracked food more days than not
-Scale read down today (funny how that works lol)

RE 100 mile challenge - I think I may start one for 2014. I really like comparing from year to year and keeping a tally. :-P. I've been toying with a "100 swim" or "100 yoga classes" challenge too, but we shall see.

I'll post my new week thread once I'm at work. I swam this morning too but I'm in Vegas for the rest of the week w/o a pool, so no more swimming til next week. I'm planning on doing body weight ST and yoga at the hotel to stay on track. Then maybe a hike this weekend.

xoxo

i'm on a couple teams that post competitive challenges. seems fun to me in principle, but in practice if I've no hope of being in the top half, it's not that motivating.

:) I'm so competitive!!! I don't always get accountability without competition. Of course, that often has kept me from participating in things!!!

I'll continue to give some thought to a personal challenge for myself, and also see if anyone else is interested in a points kind of challenge.

Weekly and/or monthly challenges are great for me, along with central reporting. That's what my goal was when I posted monthly challenges during 2013. I'm not sure if I'm creative enough to come up with something new every week though! LOL

I can't get into the points and competition though. I did it twice on the BLC teams and it just isn't my cup of tea. I do better with plain old accountability, by posting results, both good and bad.

Is anyone interested in a kind of structured challenge? One where we give specific challenges each week, and we record our results centrally, one of us keeps track of everyone, and points are awarded and people can compete to win? I tried this once before and it wasn't super active, but was an awful lot of work for the leader. It's fun to do challenges like this, but only if people are interested. I'll post a separate thread to ask the same question to see if there are any takers.

For me, I am continuing on my slow and steady fitness plan set out by my trainer in Sept. I lost momentum over the holidays and with the special project at work over the last two months, but I am committed to this plan and even thru all that I managed to not stop completely working out, which for me was a real win!

Well, I'm not off to a very good start. I woke up early intending to go to the pool and found my car blocked in by two other cars and a lot of snow. And my motivation went right out the window.... POOF!!

Seems like my main goal needs to be to just GET THERE!

I kinda like the set-your-own-goals version of the challenge. I do that on another team, too. My January goals are
(1) consistency with exercise. nothing more specific - I just need to quit with the excuses and do something every day.
(2) emptying the fridge before returning to the grocery store. I need to quit wasting food that's forgotten in the back of the fridge.
(3) I haven't gotten new clothes since my weight loss, and I have a fabric stash that needs to be used up. 'nough said.

I think Mary nailed it with nutrition/healthy eating. When I got to the goal of my old playing weight I thought "Got this locked". Looking back at that chart and seeing it starting to go back up is when I realized this isn't diet and fitness, it's life style.

My January is "just more of the same", bike, row, bands, circuit and free weights. I mix them up enough to not be bored but, oh man, all of you with pools...

My challenge is nutrition/healthy eating. I need to re-lose the 10 lbs I gained earlier in the year. I lost 5 this fall and then put back that 5 over the holidays. (I did enjoy all the yummy holiday dishes and kept up on swimming, so it could have been 10lbs.) Then I want to get to my goal weight and learn how to eat to stay there forever! (except holidays when I'll be realistic and know I'll gain about 5lbs)

I'm going to use MyFitness Pal to track as it's more convenient on my phone than SP. I will update my weight tracker on SP weekly.

My exercise habit is pretty good with swimming at least 3 days a week., the elliptical 2 days a week and strength 2 days a week. I slacked off on the weekend runs in December, but started back yesterday (5 miles and my legs are feeling it today).

I'm registered for 2 half marathons and know of at least 2 swimming events that I'll register for this year. These are what keep me on track for exercise.

Okay, I haven't heard from anyone else, so since Kourtney posted her January challenge here, I'll do the same instead of starting a new thread.

I'm not going to be as regimented as Kourtney, for two reasons. One, I'm just not motivated, and two, I have no idea what my schedule's going to be like. I could end up with all the time in the world, or I could end up with none at all. So keeping it simple is the way to go for me.

Fitness: Swim at least three times a week. No particular yardage goal, but I generally go at least 2000 to 3000 yards at a shot, so that's between 24,000 and 36,000 yards for the month. Big range, but mostly I just want to get in the water. I got a new swimsuit and cap for incentive :-) The cap's red :-)

Nutrition: Ugh, this one's really bad. I've gained 6 lbs since Thanksgiving, and I'm hoping I can get rid of at least that gain by the end of January. I'll do it by purging my diet of junk food and sugar and simple carbs. Lean meat, veggies, fruit, eggs will be the mainstays of my diet. Again, simplicity rules. I need to get back to tracking too.

Probably not a 100 for 2014. 2012 was active, 2013 turned into Carol, Jo and me. Lots of joiners, not much swimming. 2014 for me? Meh, lots of the same stuff unless someone comes up with something intriguing as I'm tapped out at this point.

Alrighty, kids - I've made myself a plan for January.

It's *very* regimented, involving a mixture of swimming, yoga, and bodyweight exercises. I'm hopeful that having a set schedule will help me get into a flow. Usually working out leads to better eating (or vice versa), so I'm going to focus on exercise this month.

This month gets a *bit* hectic. I start a sewing class, a yoga class, and a Spanish class. And I'm traveling to Vegas next week. SO it'll be good to have things pre-decided before all that craziness happens.

My plan involves:
- Posting weekly plans and status reports (on my blog)
- Staying on track while things get hectic this month
- Mixing it up to keep me focused

Wish me luck!

Kourtney

Now that December and 2013 are coming to a close, lets recommit to our fitness programs for upcoming 2014. December's challenge was not very active because everyone was so busy over the holidays. I hope more people will join me for January!

Does anyone have any challenge ideas for January? Let's get creative!

Also, are people interested in another 100 mile challenge for 2014? Anyone can start that and we'll make it a sticky!
