Yeah, Jon, since we've been doing Sunday to Saturday, let's start posting on the new one next Sunday instead of in the middle of the week. Kourtney already set it up and posted the link

Successes:
- Lost 1.8 lbs!
- Hit 70,000 steps for the week (that's my weekly goal).
- Tracked food and hit my nutrition goal every day (although some days are estimates b/c I ate out...).
- Drank 6c of water or more 4/7 days.

To Improve:
- I ate out 7 meals. I want to get that down to 4 meals this upcoming week.
- I want to keep sane as my TOM starts - no overeating from stress/anxiety/etc!
- Push back on perfectionist thoughts....

Declare badassery?
YEP! I rocked this week and will KEEP rockin' it. :D

Successes
- Ate 5 or more servings of freggies on 6 out of 7 days!
- Managed to do a little house cleaning
- Remembered vitamins every day
- I lost a little over two pounds, BUT (see badass comments below)

To Improve
- Only hit my goal twice, need to try for at least five days
- Still having problems getting in enough water
- More workouts. Only swam twice and walked once this week

Badass?
Don't feel so badass this week. I've been sick since Friday. Weight loss might have been water weight so I don't know if I can maintain it.

This is just a tune-up for May, BAB. You *do* remember that I, the fitness minutes above all else guy, was begging Laurie to pump up the "lifestyle" points, don't you? That was to give you a fighting chance, so, yeah, bring it. Heck, I'm not even going to be in the water for May so you'd better take your best shot before June...

Week of 04/13

RUNNING TOTAL FOR THE WEEK: 30.5 26.5 29.5 27 29.5 23 32 Total: 198

A good week for fitness. Lots of yard work Saturday and Sunday just seemed to pump me up during the week. For some unexplained reason I got 8 hours of sleep last night. I can't remember the last time that happened. It was interrupted as usual and I finished the night on the couch but actually slept rather than cat-napped. I'll take it!

New week goals? More sleep! I like it! Get on the stepper as I didn't this week.

Awesome? Why, yes, thank you for noticing.

Report 2-3 successes
- Got in a good amount of yardage this week, as well as a bike ride and a couple of short walks
- Did really well on food, both eating and tracking, until Friday and Saturday and then I got derailed with stress and did a lot of emotional eating.
- Ate LOTS and LOTS of freggies and really worked hard to minimize the empty carbs

Report 1-2 areas you want to improve next week
- More walking and biking. Should be doable now that the weather is *finally* better
- Still gaining weight. Need to get the emotional/stress stuff under control

Declare that you are totally f@cking awesome for participating in this challenge!
- Well, surely more awesome than the last couple of weeks!

Very cool, VDREZA. Glad to have you with us! I took a peek at your home page and it looks like you've been doing great. Any hints or tips are welcome! Toss them over to the "Good Morning Swimmers!" daily postings. It's nice to have another open water swimmer in here with all these pool jockeys (yup, I know you swim pool as well, I'm just feeling lonely on this beach while waiting for the water temp to reach reasonable). Is there a name to use other than the Spark tag? Sorry if I missed that.

I set those numbers based on the fact that I can swim a 500 in just under 10 minutes. So it was meant to give ME about the same number of points either way. I made myself the baseline because it was the only knowledge I had. A slower swimmer could use the time measure, and a faster swimmer could use the distance measure.

That said, I don't swim open water, so I really don't know how long it takes to swim a half mile. If you're swimming 1.8 MPH, that's what? A third of a mile in 10 minutes? Or about 15 minutes to swim a half mile?

I can change it if you want, to make you the baseline, so that either measure will give YOU about the same points. Then a slower swimmer can use the time measure, and a faster swimmer can use the distance measure. Or I can leave it alone and you can measure it in whichever way gives you more points. It's up to you.

And I think we should start over at zero on May 1. And I'll start a new thread on May 1 also, because this one's getting cluttered.

Laurie- check the time v distance numbers. Pool; 500 yds, figure a bit over 1/4 mile (440 yards) is over 4 miles an hour. Open; 1/2 mile or 10 minutes? I know I average 1.75-1.8 MPH so I'll definitely be counting 10 minute increments for 24 points / hr instead of 14 / hr for distance. Did I miscalculate the numbers?

Swimming (pool) 500 yds OR 10 mins
Swimming (open water) half mile OR 10 mins

Re checking the spreadsheet every day....

I finally gave up on entering on the computer and printed the damn thing out. If it's staring me in the face, I'll remember to do it. If it isn't, well, out of sight, out of mind.

Do you guys think we should start over at zero on May 1? Or just keep going with the running total?

Laurie - I love the new sheet! And I love that I can get points for things that I *need* to do but don't *want* to do (like cleaning...). : D

Report 2-3 successes
- Definitely an improvement from last week.
- Got in 3 fitmob classes, 1 swim, and 3 yogas.

Report 1-2 areas you want to improve next week
- I got off with food tracking - only tracked 3 days this past week! Let's track every day this week.
- I want to check in to the spreadsheet and my blog daily. It helps me keep on track and recognize my accomplishments (and doing so necessarily involves taking time for myself, which has been a hard thing to do lately).
- get more sleep. No more of these back-to-back 5 hours nights!

Declare that you are totally f@cking awesome for participating in this challenge!
- I'm not feeling *quite* that awesome, but I'm getting there. I'm planning to make some PROGRESS this week. let's DO IT!

Jon,
Make sure you have the most recent spreadsheet. I changed it and re-uploaded it about a dozen times as I thought of new things. ( emoticon Sorry )

Not everything on this challenge is meant to raise heart rate or even be related to fitness or nutrition. I was thinking more along the lines of a more well-rounded existence in general, and basic life happiness, which includes nutrition and fitness, but also many other components. I added that section on Home and Life because after being on this team for umpteen years, I know that a lot of us have a lot of trouble doing these things, even though they are good for us and will ultimately make us happier, more productive, and thereby healthier, people.

For myself? I despise yardwork and housework and I will avoid it at all costs. It means my house is a pigsty and my yard is a mudhole. So if earning a few points helps me get it done, then so be it. Same with getting off my butt when I don't have to, getting myself out of my house and into the real world, and reading a book instead of staring at the television. I am the laziest person on this planet (trust me, it's true) and anything that helps me change that is a good thing.

I have edited the spreadsheet to make it more relevant based on comments from users. Here's the link to the new one:

drive.google.com/file/d/0B63kzPqtgL0
qW
HZ2RlFndTFjS0E/edit?usp=sharing

We'll start this new one today, 4/13. You can still use the old one if you want to, but the new one gives the potential to earn many more points.

Changes include:
emoticon 1. ADDED STEP COUNT TO EXERCISE SECTION.
One point per 1000 steps. Great for fitbit users. No other changes to this section.

emoticon 2. CHANGES TO EATING IN VERSUS OUT REQUIREMENT.
It's not fair to say we can't ever eat a meal out. Eating out is fun and good for socializing and sometimes you can't avoid it. You still get points for eating meals prepped at home, but you can also get points for eating out as long as you make a healthy choice.

emoticon 3. COMBINED THE SNACKS PURCHASED OUT AND JUNK FOOD POINTS:
Same reasoning as above. An apple is an apple. What difference does it make if you bring it from home or buy it someplace? Now you get points for avoiding junk snacks, so matter where you get them.

emoticon 4. CHANGED THE POINTS EARNED FOR WATER:
You now get points for any water you drink, regardless of how much

emoticon 5. CHANGED THE POINTS EARNED FOR EATING "FREGGIES:"
You now get points for each serving, regardless of how many

emoticon emoticon emoticon 6. REMOVED THE "EMOTIONAL/PERSONAL GROWTH" SECTION AND ADDED "HOME AND LIFE"
It's just more relevant to our needs as a team I think. Many of us find socializing with others to be difficult, while others don't like to be alone. Now you can earn points for both. Points should be self-explanatory.

emoticon 7. REMOVED THE "REST AND RELAXATION" POINTS FROM GENERAL HEALTH
See #6 above. These points were pretty vague. The new "Home and Life" section includes several new, more specific ways to get points for rest and relaxation.

emoticon 8. CHANGED THE POINTS EARNED FOR SLEEP
You now get a half a point for each hour.

emoticon 9. ADDED A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR OR DENTIST TO THE GENERAL HEALTH SECTION
Because we should. Self-explanatory.

WHEW!! Happy points gathering!

Laurie-

I like the point / 1000 steps even though I have no way of tracking and my career is mostly desk-bound.

Only if the activity raises ones' heat rate. Yardwork- definitely as long as we're not contemplating things like sit-down mowers. Raking, clearing (my body is telling me that was 100 points yesterday and more to come today) and garden tending? Yes. Cleaning? Unless it's spring cleaning (beating rugs, moving furniture, etc) probably minimal points as at least one is moving. I don't recall raising my heart rate vacuuming or mopping. Maybe general cleaning would be covered on steps? Reading? Not unless it was a self-improvement tome although with my Kindle addiction I could rack up some serious points.

Speaking of yard work, I noticed that the tracker lists gardening and farm but not yard work. Having worked on a couple of farms growing up heavy yard work is closer to farm than tending flowers.

Anyway, I think I'll sit out the rest of April and hit it again in May.

Haha.... that's specific!

Okay, how about 1 point per 1000 steps?

I made the changes you suggested. Any others?

Does anyone do the emotional/personal growth thing? I don't do any of those. Should we add in stuff that is more relevant? How about cleaning/decluttering? Doing yardwork? Going to a club meeting? Volunteer work? Reading a book? Other ideas?

Thousands works. :D

let's up:
- water (1 pt per 2 or 3 cups?)
- staying in cal range (3 pts?)

Okay, I can add steps in. You want it measured in Ks? Or in number of steps?

I'll leave the points alone for exercise. But can you be more specific about the lifestyle things? Which lifestyle things are you talking about? It's sort of all "lifestyle"

I realy like Jon's idea of weighing lifestyle things more heavily (but not by reducing those points :P just upping the lifestyle ones). Tracking food is a BIG thing for me so I'd LOVE it to be worth more than 1 point. :P Upping points for water would be good, too.

I also track steps and would *love* for that to be on there too! I aim for 10k a day, so maybe a point for 10k (or fraction of a point for less / more, e.g., .8 for 8k, 1.2 for 12k, etc). Thoughts?

Okay, then I think I should redo the points spreadsheet. I'd like to get some input from others before I do it. I can raise the points for the nutrition and general health parts, and lower the points for workouts. What about the emotional/mental health part? Is anyone actually using that? I'll earn a point or two if I go to a CLE, but I'm not reading articles or doing anything else there that would earn me any points. (Although I actually earned a point tonight by attending my son's soccer game) Remember, I adapted this from Mary's school district's program, and a lot of that was probably geared towards the common needs of educators. What do you all think? Leave it in or take it out?

You can't out-train a bad diet". I did and as soon as I slacked off, figuring I had this in the bag, I started back up. As I posted, that's when I realized lifestyle was more than the Big Sweat. I think there should be more weight given to tracking things like diet in the Nutrition and General Health categories of the spreadsheet. One point each? Maybe two in general, maybe more for things like junk food avoidance, veggies/fruit or tracking food intake (portiion control there as well as overlapping the junk catagory) or water intake. Personally, I think those are the areas that post long term gains.

I do apparently have the metabolism of a large rock, even with the swimming. I blame menopause. Then again, I have never considered exercise to be a weight loss tool. I like it for other reasons, but it has NEVER helped me lose weight.

Remember the old saying: You can't out-train a bad diet. At the moment, my diet is pretty bad.

What did you have in mind for weighting, Jon? Just less points for workouts and more points for other stuff? Help me out here....

But the bad eating times add up and count for more, Mary. I lost my weight, figured I had it licked, slacked off and discovered that my exercising (think I'm bad now?) was covering bad habits as my weight immediately started going up. That's when I took Spark to heart and realized it's a lifestyle change. That's why I suggested weighting things other than minutes heavier.

I agree with Jon. I might not do anything else, but track fitness points and it keeps me from gaining back all that I lost, even during the bad eating times.

Maybe the lifestyle stuff should be more heavily weighted. It's the how-you-live-your-life that takes it off and keeps it off. Exercise kickstarts the process but the rest of the day, everyday, counts for more. I do my daily fitness minutes religiously as otherwise I'd have the metabolism of a large rock.

I guess everyone held posting end of week for end of month.

Successes? Definitely more stretching. I was doing the minimums, as it turns out. Ten minutes really is a long and lean thing.

Improvement? I'm still warily eyeing that stepper...

Next week? Collapse. Nah, this was a good Challenge, I'm going to work on that devil stepper. Really.

Awesome? Yes, but the Missus lets me say it (grin).

- 106.5 points. Meh. Not as good as last week, but I think I lost a pound, so I'll take it, and the 3 points that goes with it.

Report 2-3 successes
- I'm sleeping pretty well
- I'm remembering to take my vitamins
- I'm working on weaning off the scale. The batteries died, I changed them, and the scale still doesn't read right. I can weigh at the pool. I don't need to weigh every day at home.

- Eat out less - aim for 17 meals in.
- Track food and stay in range! I only tracked & was in range 5 days. Let's make it 7.

Declare that you are totally f@cking awesome for participating in this challenge!
- I'm not feeling terribly badass... gotta step it up this week.

Laurie - most of my fractional points come from sleep, or from portions of 500 yards swam and weird length yoga sessions.

Are we all adding points up in the same way? How are you guys calculating that you're getting fractions of points?
