End of month results.

Things went well with the after work workouts until this week. We had events every evening except Tuesday, so I only made one after work workout. I almost blew off Tuesday, but this challenge gave me the incentive to stop at the gym. I made up for it by going Thursday morning, but that meant missing a swim. I did swim on Saturday for 62 minutes instead of the usual 30. No yoga this week, and I was feeling it today. So I've started the week off well with yoga and swimming this morning! On to the next challenge!

40.25 miles swim. So I crashed that 30. I missed the first day due to weather but other than that every Saturday and Sunday saw me getting wet. Consistency has always been the way I hit any goal, personal or professional. My other goal for August is a prime example; I just couldn't build any consistency on the stepper. My max was 300 (300 L& 300 R). I'd take too many days off between hitting it and found myself sliding back to an earlier count. Sorry my posts were so thin here. That might have been an impetus to more stepper but I had fun this month so there's that. Wow, I haven't posted to the 100 mile challenge since early July (what was I saying in an earlier post about being lazy?) so I'd better head over there.

End of month reporting...

I made my 20,000 yards, actually went over by 550 emoticon

Eating was a horrible bust, especially the last half of the month. I gained close to six pounds. WTF emoticon emoticon

Laurie,

The best part of age group swimming is even when you have a crummy swim you have the chance of earning a ribbon!

50 Back - First Place 59.95 seconds (6 seconds better than seed time, even with running into the lane line)

100 Free - Third Place 2.09 (Lost goggles AND cap off the blocks! Worst time ever.)

200 Mixed Medley Relay - Second place (swam back stroke leg)

Yay! Good to hear from everyone!

Mary, how did you do in your events on Saturday?

Gor, I love how you're concentrating on stuff with hubby :-)

Kourtney, is your trip to IL work or pleasure? Or both? Have a good, safe trip!

8/17-8/23 Results

1) Keep the streak going on MyFitnessPal YES
2) Swim with masters group M-F instead of MWF YES

This Real Challenge is becoming a HABIT!
3) Elliptical AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week (1 distance day, 1 interval day (new)) YES
4) Yoga AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week. YES
5)Rest one day on weekend YES
6)No running on the road until after masters meet to let heel heal YES

I made my goals this week and swam in 3 events at our meet on Saturday. I almost didn't get on the elliptical on Thursday because of the meet, but did a light workout just to stay in the habit.

Weight has stayed the same this week, which is ok. We had the grandkids this weekend and 2 minor league baseball games to go to. It was our last 2 games and last chance for a funnel cake which I'd decided to defer to the last game to keep on track with my weight and healthy eating. My mom and I shared one and it was delicious.

My update:

1) Turn off the media (TV, computer, cell phone) by 9pm Sunday-Thursday.
Yes.

2) Lights out and sawing logs by 10pm Sunday-Friday.
Yes.

3) Hit the fitness center by 6:30am on Monday(Swim/Walk), Wednesday(Swim/Walk), Thursday(Strength) and before 5pm on Sunday (Strength) Swim/Walk on Saturday AM. Skate on Tuesday AM and Friday AM.

Yes. I swam twice and it would have been three. I learned that an evening of wine doesn't make for an early morning the next day.

4) Cook for the week on the weekend.

No. I haven't really felt like cooking this month. It is a good thing the freezer has last month's leftovers....I baked cookies and I enjoyed it. I used to bake all the time. I don't remember how I let it go, but I still enjoy it and must do it more often, just for fun.

5) Smooches for honey when I arrive home. 5 minutes of meditation. Joy talk in the evening. M-F

Yes.

6) Laundry, clean kitchen counters and kitchen sink 1x week.

Laundry is all I did. I will work on this next month.

7) Clear out one box per week from the garage.

Nope. September stuff.

8) Pack for tomorrow Sunday-Thursday.

I did this most of the time. Sometimes I only did it half way, though. This is something else to get more consistent about.

9) 3-10 minute movement breaks M-F

Yes!

10) Do something fun or novel each week(end)

Yes. Skyrobics trampoline aerobics and baking. It is good to have something to look forward to. We also ate out, but I wasn't that into it. I'm not sure why. I usually enjoy eating out.

Overall: i learned I better keep the evening wine to a minimum if I want a good morning swim the next day. I also learned that i need to plan out my weekends better so I can enjoy getting stuff done.

We still have one more week, right?

Alrighty I haven't been reporting (or doing well.. it's like to two go hand in hand! *facepalm*)

So here's how my month went:

Food - eating alright but not really tracking... so probably not eating as well as I think.

Water - haven't been tracking so likely haven't gotten anywehre near enough.

Weigh ins: I'm a big bloated right now (TOM), but it's been an up and down month, with a low of 168.9 and a high of 173.9. Time to make CONSISTENT progress!

Yoga - the first two weeks I did well, with 3 yogas a week! Last week I only got in one. :(
Cardio - only 1 per week. I want to up this!

Goals for this week:

2 yogas (Tue and Wed) and 2 cardios (Mon and Thu). I head to IL for a week and change on Friday, so I want to be heading there feeling successful and able to handle the stress of family food habits.

I also want to be consistently tracking food EVERY DAY and hitting my calories at least 4 of the 5 days. I'll make another plan once I'm in IL and know my schedule a bit better.

xoxo

Kourtney

Reporting in for week of 8/15 - 8/22

I swam once, on the 15th, 2500 yards. 4800 yards to go.

It's been a bad week without swimming. I'm up 2.5 lbs and I'm not paying great attention to my eating. I have to shop for groceries and I'm going to stock up on fresh produce. The pool reopens Monday, but I won't get there till Tuesday because Monday's schedule is already packed. Hopefully I can get rid of those extra pounds next week. I still want to take it easy on the swimming. My back seems better, but I don't want to risk a re-injury.

My update:

1) Turn off the media (TV, computer, cell phone) by 9pm Sunday-Thursday.
This one is really paying off. My husband is so happy he even unloaded the dishwasher (which is my job) and did not even brag about it...a little attention and he become the most understanding guy in the planet!

2) Lights out and sawing logs by 10pm Sunday-Friday.
I had a late night last week and let my sleep fall off which means that I did not get up early. The worst thing is that it impacted my whole week as it took me that long to get back on schedule. Next time I fall off schedule I need to get back on quickly and suffer the early morning pain for one day instead of letting it become a week of pain.

3) Hit the fitness center by 6:30am on Monday(Swim/Walk), Wednesday(Swim/Walk), Thursday(Strength) and before 5pm on Sunday (Strength) Swim/Walk on Saturday AM. Skate on Tuesday AM and Friday AM.
Zonk. When I don't get up early because I let one day go late, I screwed my whole week. Lesson learned. It will not happen again. (see above.)

4) Cook for the week on the weekend.
Nope. I've been eating from the freezer. Last month's cooking is paying off this month. I'm glad for the rest.

5) Smooches for honey when I arrive home. 5 minutes of meditation. Joy talk in the evening. M-F
Of course. I do this because it makes my household much happier...and me too!

6) Laundry, clean kitchen counters and kitchen sink 1x week.
I cleaned the bathroom instead. Maybe I'm not much of a housekeeper.

7) Clear out one box per week from the garage.
Zonk!

8) Pack for tomorrow Sunday-Thursday.
This is still an area for improvement. I get home too late and am hungry. By the time I'm done eating, it is time for light out. If I eat a pbj on the way home, things go much better. I need to pack my pbj with my lunch.

9) 3-10 minute movement breaks M-F
Yes!

10) Do something fun or novel each week(end)
We ate out. I always enjoy that. I'm a bit sad that the little mom and pop type place in my new (as of one year) community are not as good as in my old community. Maybe I need to keep exploring and I will eventually hit on the gems. I learned that yelpers in orange county don't have the same tastes as yelpers in los angeles county. I've been using yelp to help find restaurants and they let me down.. emoticon

Overall: I want to get back on my schedule as soon as I can after it gets 'off track.'
I want to pack my lunch and an evening sandwich so I am not so hungry when I get home. I want to do the household stuff that I know will help me feel better in the long run instead of watching netflexx... I can still 'visit' with honey. He can join in or recline, but I need to get my garage back. I think that is a big task and I'll have to focus on it next month. This month I'm going with the morning and evening things that make me and honey happy.

Decided to report today instead of my usual Monday.

1) Keep the streak going on MyFitnessPal YES
2) Swim with masters group M-F instead of MWF YES
Now the REAL CHALLENGE
3) Elliptical AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week (1 distance day, 1 interval day (new)) YES
4) Yoga AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week. YES
These 2 are getting easier. DH has just asked that I not make it too late on the days I go to the gym. So I need to try and leave work a little early or at least on time.
5)Rest one day on weekend YES
6)No running on the road until after masters meet to let heel heal YES

I've really been keeping track of my food on MyFitnessPal and it is definitely paying off. I was down again this week. Even with pizza for bookclub night on Monday and Friday night, plus a buffet lunch yesterday.

Laurie-Try to enjoy the rest and substitute that bike your dusting off for a few rides. Great job on avoiding all the white stuff. Maybe a trip to a farmer's market or vegetable stand will help you find some appealing veggies?

Reporting in for week of 8/8 thru 8/14

4 swims totalling 7200 yards. 7300 yards to go.

I probably overdid it this week. I am hurting :-( But the pool is now closed for nine days. I'll be interested in how this enforced rest will affect me.

The clean eating is going okay. I had two days where I had little or no control over the food I was eating (either eat what's there, or eat nothing ... pick your evil) and I'm up half a pound. I also really need to work on veggie consumption. I'm in one of those awkward phases where veggies just aren't appealing to me. But I am doing well at tracking and avoiding sugar and white flour and processed junk.

...I typically don't get online in the weekend, so here is my update:

1) Turn off the media (TV, computer, cell phone) by 9pm Sunday-Thursday.
YES! It is making for a better marriage because my husband has my attention and he likes that.

2) Lights out and sawing logs by 10pm Sunday-Friday.
75%. I stay up for 30-60 minutes after honey goes to sleep and "break" rule #1 by going to my ipad.

3) Hit the fitness center by 6:30am on Monday(Swim/Walk), Wednesday(Swim/Walk), Thursday(Strength) and before 5pm on Sunday (Strength) Swim/Walk on Saturday AM. Skate on Tuesday AM and Friday AM.
Yes. Fitness is always easy for me. I even went to the gym on Saturday before the amusement park visit...patting myself on back....

4) Cook for the week on the weekend.
Honey cooked, so I didn't have to. Yay!

5) Smooches for honey when I arrive home. 5 minutes of meditation. Joy talk in the evening. M-F
Yes. I am happier and honey is happier.

6) Laundry, clean kitchen counters and kitchen sink 1x week.
1 out of 3 isn't...good. I need to figure out how to clean the kitchen. The good news is my honey is happier with me because of rule 1 and 5 so he picked up the slack.

7) Clear out one box per week from the garage.
Zonk! I went to the amusement park with nephews.

8) Pack for tomorrow Sunday-Thursday.
Less than 50% :-( ...I need to set the time to do this...I should do it when I shut things down. I tell myself after I rest a bit I'll do it, but then I just say tomorrow...I got to fix this.

9) 3-10 minute movement breaks M-F
Yes!

10) Do something fun or novel each week(end)
Have you been to Universal Studios Hollywood lately? I did on Saturday. It was fun. Yup, the crowd was OK.

So, I need to work on packing for tomorrow, cleaning my kitchen, and my garage. This weekend I have less things planned and I got to keep it that way so I can do these things. I also need to remember the things that keep honey happy because when I do miss my housekeeping, he will not be as likely to be bothered by it.

Reporting in for week of 8/1 thru 8/7. I should be reporting in on Fridays, got busy yesterday. Oops.

Three swims totalling 5500 yards. 14500 yards to go.

I am still concerned about my shoulder/upper back, but it actually feels a little better today. I had no pain after swimming this morning, although it did creep up on me this afternoon. It almost seems to be about posture more than usage.

I've done pretty well with the clean eating. I'm tracking every day, so that makes it easier to be honest with myself. I still need to up my veggie consumption, but I only ate sugar once all week and white flour once all week. I also had a mini bag of potato chips, which I never eat anymore. Honestly, it didn't even taste good.

I missed my checkin on Sunday. SO I'm going to first report on last week (7/27 - 8/2) now.

emoticon starting and ending weigh-ins -
SUNDAY 173.3
SATURDAY 175.3 ** weight artificially inflated by bingeing all weekend... was 171.1 the day before**

emoticon fitness minutes

cardio - 120 min (2 classes)
yoga - 150 min (2 classes)

emoticon water drank

not a clue...

emoticon food tracked - just y/n for each day.

tracked 6/7 days

emoticon in ranges - just y/n for each day.

in range 4/7 days

emoticon Total Steps during the week
45,112 (10,000 2 days, 8000-10000 2 days, very low 3)

emoticon # of times I did the dishes over the week

Dishes done only once

***

This week hasn't quite gone as planned yet... but it's improving slowly but surely (and the scale and my mood can both attest to that). I had a feeling this week would be rough with Mike in Amsterdam - it's been harder to cook for myself and to motivate myself out of the cat-filled bed in the morning.

BUT I am making progress. I've tracked the last 3 days and been in-range the last two of them. I also tried pilates for the first time last night and liked it (although I need to try a class that isn't "basics" level to really get a good burn).

Trying to keep focusing on the positive. xoxo

Thanks Laurie. Those were tactics i use to feel more joyful and when i am in a better mood there is less friction at home ....because i am less on edge...AND less fighting feeds into more joy...

Jon, I heard the secret to happiness (or something like it) is low expectations...so...if it is good enough for the big leagues...

So I've been rethinking my goals for this challenge. Challenge is the word not just keep doing the same thing. Like John my eating is pretty much under control during a month like this with no vacationing etc., also not giving up that glass of wine at dinner and I'm pretty good at getting to the pool or gym in the mornings. Our masters team also started a challenge last week with teams competing for the highest number of practice attended. So I've made some adjustments:

1) Keep the streak going on MyFitnessPal
2) Swim with masters group M-F instead of MWF
Now the REAL CHALLENGE
3) Elliptical AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week (1 distance day, 1 interval day (new))
4) Yoga AFTER WORK at least 2 x a week.
These 2 are harder than I thought
5)Rest one day on weekend
6)No running on the road until after masters meet to let heel heal

I'll post results on Mondays.

30 mile swim (not all at once, obviously) For some reason I'm struggling this year with that long and lean feeling from a good swim.

Get on that darn stepper. I want 500 (1000 combined L&R) non-stop by EOM. I'll take any time for it so long as I'm under 160 MHR. I did 100 a couple of days ago and flirted with it.

I'm on pace for my yearly minutes so that's not an option, I slosh when I walk so I can't increase water consumption, my diet is boringly consistent so that's out (I'm not giving up a glass of wine with dinner, forget that). If I think of anything, I'll add.

Let's do this!

Laurie's August Goals:

1. Swim 20,000 yards.
I had to limit this for August for two reasons.
(1) My pool will be closed for 9 full days for their annual maintenance from the 16th to the 24th.
(2) My doc ordered reduced yardage because of my shoulder/upper back issue.

2. Clean eating 5 out of every 7 days.
Means no processed food, no white flour or sugar.

That's it for me! Trying to KISS, as usual.

Okay, here it is. Many of us are saying we had a sucky July, so let's reboot for August!

RULES:
Post your goals for the month. Whatever you want. Fitness minutes, yardage/mileage, food intake, tracking, water, sleep, whatever you feel needs to be "rebooted."

Post a progress report each week. Are you satisfied? What needs improvement?

No disappearing allowed! If you sign up for this, you're in for the month. If you disappear, I'll hunt you down. (Half kidding - but I will come and ask if you're okay.) This is all about accountability and supporting each other!

That's it!

Happy August!
