Love the story and perception. Thank you for sharing. When I first read the question...in all honesty...I wouldn't want to be either. I can swim and live on an island surrounded by water, and yet I am afraid of seaweed and most sea creatures. Couldn't survive as either. Off topic a little sorry.

I have seen this on FB...it had a picture of a beautiful curvy woman with it.
I personally don't want to be skinny. There, I've said it, are you shocked?
I think that one of the points of this story is that, as women, we are told we should strive to be something most of us can never be. (as LOSINGK said) but also, not every woman wants to be a super model. In my opinion 2 of the sexiest women in the world are Mia Tyler and Jennifer Tilly. Neither one of them are skinny.
I think that every person has to decided for themselves where they will be happy. My goal weight is 200lbs. A lot of woman on this team started their journey well under that weight. Even though I will still be considered overweight at 200lbs, I know I can be healthy at that weight...and very happy!

I think the point of this was in addressing the pressure we're put under by society to achieve the unachievable. While I don't entirely agree with everything the responder said, I do agree that mermaids don't exist and if you want to be happy and healthy you need to love yourself for who you are and strive for the best possible life because it's what you deserve, not because it's what society says is correct.

With that said, I'd also like to be a healthy whale. emoticon

I really think this is all about perceptions. What we are told is beautiful and desirable is to be skinny. Not healthy, athletic, curvaceous but supermodel scary skinny. That any "flaw" you have makes you undesirable. Starve yourself or take a pill to get where our society tells us to be. To compare a mermaid to a whale is just wrong. Why ask us to be something that is unreachable, not real and a legend? Being skinny is awesome, I want to be skinny like the next person. But I won't be trying to be a mermaid. Like another poster said, I want to be a healthy whale, I want to be a skinny whale!

I don't want come off sounding rude but it probably will and I'm not sure how to say it but here it is. It is not wisdom that makes you think your not obese, it's something else, depending on who you are and how you look at the world.

I disagree with this in part...I don't think that I was obese for almost 10 years because I carried so much wisdom...I have just as much wisdom now if not more 95 lbs lighter. But I still can enjoy those things such as ice cream and fun times with my family. I want to be thin, not skeleton thin, but thin. It gives me so much pleasure in life. But this is just my opinion...

Not sure if anyone else has seen this on FB but I love it! Enjoy.

A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! "

Last comment: I'm not putting down thin people, being a thin woman myself (BMI of 22 maybe?) just saying that being large doesn't equate to being unattractive.
