If the book starts to be boring I start to scan. If it starts to look good again then I will finish it. I think I only gave up on one book, I just didn't like it. I usually follow the rule to finish a book but that ine was just not enjoyable at all.

Usually the first couple of chapters; and if I find some stuff I usually get rid of it if it is a Kindle book or bring it back to the library.

i have never quit a book but I have skimmed fro awhile to see if the story is getting better or not. Usually this is an author that adds all kinds of info not relating to the story.

I can count on one hand the number of times I have given up on a book. Occasionally I will put one aside for a while and come back to it. I just did that last week, as a matter of fact. A well-written novel in which a toddler drowns in the first chapter, and I just lost my taste for it after that... I need something a little lighter right now.

I usually just put it aside and try again at a later date. Most of the time I will finish a book but there have been a couple of times I couldn't.

I very seldom give up on books. I can probably count the times on one hand. I have no set number of pages or chapters - just until I can't take it.

I'll give a book a chapter or two (depending on the length of the chapters) to catch my interest. The longest I've lasted was half way thru a John Grisham novel but it reminded me too much of his earlier novels that I tossed it aside. That was the last John Grisham I bothered to pick up as well. It's like he recycles his plots and characters after he changes the title.

I'm a historian so reading is somewhat of a discipline for me and I will almost always finish a book. The last one I put down was the latest Tom Clancy because every third word was "f---." I don't mind the occasional swear word, some characters are defined by Elizabeth George, and P.D. James among others in that fashion, but when every character just cusses to be cussing, nah, I don't need that.

sometimes its bad timing when I start a book, and I need to really try again another day (like i pick up a book then get this stack of required readings for class--i have to put it aside then).

but also, it depends on WHEN in the day i'm reading--if its late enough at night, some books won't hold my interest because i won't be able to retain anything. when i have LOTS of time, i'll read those harder-to-digest works. otherwise, when it gets too tangled a plot or it looks like the author's trying too hard to be suspenseful by having too many characters and sidestories or putting too much sex to make up for a lack of plot, then yeah, i'll toss it.

I've no set limit. Sometimes I lose interest after a chapter or two, sometimes I can get quite far.

Sometimes as much as 1/2 esp. if others "really" liked it ,but lately I'm getting picky-life is too short-and toss it sooner.

Me too, Echo. Rarely do I give up on a recorded book, but it happens, usually when the reader always uses the long "a" or "the". It sounds so tortured I can't bear it. Thank goodness authors don't read their whole book, even though I understand they read the condensed audio books (I don't read condensed books, and I won't listen to them). The only author-reader I liked was Simon Brett reading his Charles Paris mysteries. Turns out he is actually an actor turned writer.

50 pages or so or first or second chapter depending upon whether I'm hoping it will get better. The audio CD's/talking Books are so much better on most books. Some authors are better in the books, but most of the time listening is much better. But, I have quit on talking books, too because I don't like them -- first 10 or 15 minutes is enough.

I'll give a well reviewed book about 100 pages. A book I just grabbed at the library because it was there, maybe 25. The library is always there, and I can always try again another time if I want.

I don't know why, but I can listen to books that I can't read to save me. Maybe I have more patience when I am actually accomplishing other tasks.

Nancy Pearl, a librarian in Seattle (with a Librarian action figure no less) has the Rule of 50:
If you still don't like a book after the first 50 pages, set it aside. If you're more than 50 years old, subtract your age from 100 and only grant it that many pages.

How much of a chance do you give a book before giving up?
