Hi everyone, on my last day of vacation. It was so good to have time off work and stay home. I got so much accomplished. Walls washed, closets and dressers cleaned out, and flowers planted. I got my summer clothes out and donated everything that is too big. Not going to hold on to that stuff anymore.

Hope you are all doing well.

I did lower body strength training this morning on the following:
-Leg Press--4 sets--15 reps--80 lbs
-Leg Extensions--4 sets--15 reps--25 lbs
-Seated Leg Curls--4 sets--15 reps--40 lbs
-Hip Adductor--4 sets--15 reps--115 lbs
-Hip Abductor--4 sets--15 reps--145 lbs
-Seated Abdominal--4 sets--15 reps--30 lbs
-Torso Rotation Right--4 sets--15 reps--75 lbs
-Torso Rotation Left--4 sets--15 reps--75 lbs

Too tired to do cardio in the morning, and busy until 9 PM tonight, so I'll hit it tomorrow on my strength day off.

I did strength training today! I didn't get to go to the gym early as I had planned; my little girl needed to have a sick day from school. She's feeling much better. I went when DH got home from work. I did 3 sets of 15 reps on the following machines:
-MTS Incline Press: 15 lbs
-MTS Rows: 30 lbs
-Back Extensions: 95 lbs
-Shoulder Flys: 3 lbs (free weights)
-Bicep Curls: 30 lbs
-Tricep Press: 60 lbs
-Tricep Extensions: 50 lbs

It was rough after not having done weights since Friday, May 9, and not exercising since Saturday, May 10, but I did it. I was too fatigued to do cardio there, so I came home, rested, then did 30 minutes on the treadmill (only 1.4 miles).

Hey guys - It sounds like people are really clicking along in this challenge! I was doing so well, but I am struggling right now. I'm not sure how to fix it, since it seems to be more in my head than anywhere else. emoticon The fighting season has started, and I'm my stress levels are pretty high, and I'm reverting to doughnuts. ... It's weird because I've been under an exceptional amount of stress for months, and I wasn't cracking then.
Sheesh! I feel like I should lie on a sofa, the way I'm telling you all my problems.LOL

I want muscle. I have always lost really slowly and I have read about strength training being good for fat loss, metabolism, and for my diabetes. So I am committed to two days per week and see what happens.

Hi team!

Glad that you are trying the ST exploration. Don't be afraid to start. When I began 3 years ago, it was daunting. I was not confident but my trainer was experienced so I trusted her and did WHATEVER she said with my best effort. I was so sore for three days after, every time, but I improved so quickly! Way faster than I expected. The pounds did not fall off but the inches did. Here's an example:
A pound of fat is the size of a large cantaloupe but a pound of muscle is a baseball. Which do you want?

I'm excited about the bonus challenge too! After my week+ hiatus from the gym I NEED this to motivate me to go back. I have my gym bag in the car, and my clothes set out so I can leave as soon as the kiddos get on the bus.
Thanks, Cat...I'm getting there! I'll do the weights at the gym first. That way it's done, so if I have to take it easy on the cardio machines it's ok.

I am so glad our challenge this week is strength training. It is my weakness. I do not know why because I work out most days. I just started again working with some weights. Looking forward to reading the articles and giving it a try.

Obviously, you want to control clutter and make sure they really enjoy what they do have, but I think it's sort of sweet that are like what they have and appreciate it. My nieces and nephews make me sad. They really don't feel gratitude for what they have and assume it's all just theirs for the asking.

Feel better! You sound like you're not quite well yet. emoticon

I'm just popping in to say that I hope everyone had a great Monday. Mine wasn't bad--could've been better. I planned to get back to the gym. I didn't.

My kiddos are hoarders. Tevery time I try to help them sort toys, they want to keep everything, and by the end they've accumulated more by raiding the baby/toddler/preschool toys I've put aside in the basement for the summer yard sale and then Goodwill. I decided to do it this time while they were at school. Instead of clear bins and giant Ziplocs, I bought black contractor bags.

Long story short, after several trips up and down two flights of steps from their bedrooms to the basement and back, I was coughing like crazy. Apparently, though I'm feeling much better, my chest still has some congestion. The only place I went was to the store for some Mucinex. I figure I'll take it easy one more day, then hit it on Wednesday.

When you don't feel well, everything seems harder. LOL@tracking coughing. It seems we should be able to!

I'm up several pounds this week. It's odd. I craved sweets and carbs and went bonkers on the eating -- and then got my period. Not odd, you say, except ... I just had one. Am I now on the every other week cycle, alternating PMS and bleeding? emoticon

We went to my daughter's Daisy graduation. It wore me out! The food was not good either...it just tasted "off". I thought it was because I've not felt well. It wasn't. We have all been taking turns in the bathroom! Yuck!! At least it's "leaving" quickly (LOL!!); I hate "wasting" calories on not great food!
The ceremony was very nice, and I was ok...had to leave twice so as not to disturb with my coughing fits...but I made it. Wouldn't have missed it for the world! Now my little "Daisy" is now a Brownie. My kiddos are growing up way too fast!

I know people differ, but I don't think you should push yourself when you're unwell. Maybe it's different for people who are fit and at healthy weights, but overweight people have a lot of stored toxins, have health problems, and sometimes have compromised immune systems. Take care of yourself!

I've been in a "nothing" phase all week in the exercise department. I've been feeling sick...stuffy nose, itchy throat and ears, that feeling that I'm ABOUT to get a headache that never comes. I'm hoping this passes soon and I can get my mojo back!

Myah -Being inherently lazy, I have trouble imagining myself ever over-exercising, but many of us have addictive personalities, and as we try to remove bad choices, we sometimes over-do on the good ones. The Biggest Loser show has contestants working out like maniacs and living on 1200 calories a day, so I guess it can work, but they know what they're doing. Maybe it's a question of nutrition? Not enough rest time? Dehydration? These are all things to consider. Sorry you're not seeing the results you deserve. How frustrating!

Nikki - I tend to be all of nothing, too, but in my experience, that always eventually becomes "nothing". *sigh* It's a journey.

Shana - Anything we're not used to stresses our bodies. Some stress is good, but I think a lot of us (speaking for myself) are really out of shape. And my doc told me something interesting. We "chronic dieters", yo-yo dieters, extreme dieters all strip our metabolisms and burn muscle instead of fat. As a result, even if the scale has the same number, the composition is different. We become "underlean" for our weight. It's then harder to lose weigh and build muscle.

Shana,
That was the problem though....I am not at 5hr hike level just yet! lol. Actually I would think this applies to everyone but even more so to those of us that hadn't previously been exercising regularly. I struggle with that sort of internal dialogue too "surely I should be able to do MORE, I shouldn't feel so bad after a workout like that, I am just being a slacker". I am finding I need to be more patient with myself and my body and listen to what it is telling me, not what the media or the wannabe Jillian Michaels in my head is telling me, lol.

Myah, Nikki - I have no answers, lol. I was actually wondering about this Monday night. At 5:30 I did my Jillian class at Curves. High intensity cardio + the machines for 30 minutes. Tough workout! But when i got home, I was done for the night. I probably could have mustered up energy, but I vegged on the couch. I've been asking myself Was that too intense for my physical ability? Surely they don't mean a 30 minute routine is too much?? I always envisioned those warnings were for marathon trainers and such. Or 5-hour hikers. ;)

Mazzie, me too! I went from couch potato (I was sick though too) to fitness freak in 6 months, lol. I am going a little too fast for my body though I guess. So far I am finding that if you can learn to listen to the subtle differences in what your body is saying, you will be able to find that balance. Like learning the difference between good muscle burn and muscle damage. I am learning that you (or at least me anyway) should always feel better and more energized after a workout, not weak and completely exhausted.
Figuring out the diet part is a little harder though because learning the difference between good hungry (mild caloric deficit for weight loss) and starving myself into a slowed metabolism is hard for me to tell the difference.....

Myah: thanks for sharing! I tend to be "all or nothing"--either too much or too little. I didn't know too much exercise with too much restriction of calories was bad for your thyroid. I'll try to be more careful--please share if you find a good balance!

Well I tried a SP recipe last night. Here is the link:

recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.
asp?recipe=860014

I am on a low carb high fat for diabetes management. So this might not be up anyone alley.

It was delicious. The SP crust had 1.7 g of carb traditional pizza crust has 27g. Huge difference when you are counting carbs. The taste was good, it was wetter than regular pizza crust. I must say I ate it for lunch today and it was better after sitting all night.

Is anyone else struggling with moderation when it comes to exercise?

I had been continuing to increase my exercise and decrease my calories as my weight loss slowed but instead of helping, it made things worse. Like last week end I had gone on a 5hr hike in the rain (normal in Oregon, lol) it actually caused me to gain water weight and then plateau for the rest of the week, ugh.
Then I read recently that too much exercise on too few calories can really damage thyroid function, especially in people who already have thyroid disease (I have Hashimoto's).
So now I am trying to find a balancing point of being active and making sure I workout regularly but trying not to overdo it.
So far it is helping! I have been taking it easier the past few days and trying to make sure I eat lunch and my weight loss is starting to pick up again (yay!). Let's hope that trend continues, lol.

Thanks, Lorrie! I appreciate the encouragement. I didn't feel like it, but I got on the treadmill for 45 minutes today. I'm a little worried that my bum knee is acting up, but if I can keep it from getting truly injured long enough to lose some weight, I know it will feel a lot better.

How's everyone's week going so far?

Nikki - LOL on the OCD bonus! I do believe that we should all take an intentional rest day from our hard exercise routines but we should still be active in some "fun" way. For instance, we can do a yoga or have stretch session, go for a leisurely walk in the park or around your neighborhood, play catch with the kids, swim, stroll the mall, or dance, So, since your rest day is already past, think of something you did yesterday other than sitting on the couch or in a resturaunt that can count as moving.

Cat - congratulations on the 7 miles! Your up in weight is likely water retention from the muscle repair activities. Stay the course and you'll see the scale move.

Lorrie: I have a dumb question about the bonus points. I took today as my rest day, so I have no fitness to track. Do I get a 0 for today? I know...I'm way to OCD about the bonus points! emoticon

I was a 26/28, and now I'm a 24. Still a long way to go. When I start to feel discouraged, I use my marathon training. Don't think about how many miles are left. Break it down into increments and focus on them. So now I'm focused on 247. Getting under 250 will be a big achievement for me.

34 to 18 ... WOW! You should be SO proud! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey team,
Cat - its true. There is a small print paragraph the gives the information right below the field where your weight is entered. Congratulations on the 10% loss!
emoticon
You are seeing the fruit of your consistent efforts. Likely your clothes sizes have changed, too. You should record your measurements in SP on the Weight page and go to the mall to see the size differences. It's always a bit of a shock for me when I used to wear size 34's and now 18. It is a good motivator to continue the journey.

Jen - glad to hear that you are getting sleep!

Keep tracking - the data is valuable.

Jen - Thanks for the idea. I have only had 11 hours of sleep i th epast 3 nights, and it really wears me down.

Thanks, Shana! I can sense that it's harder to get weight off now, but I'm feeling super motivated.

Any fun plans this weekend?

Lorrie - Is that true? I've dropped 30+ and I don't recall seeing anything from SP. Maybe I wasn't paying attention ... hunh.

Nikki - I've only slept 11 ours in the past 3 nights, and I'm dragging, too. I was so emotionally riled up last night that I could not seem to turn it off and fall asleep. I kept having mental conversations with my jerky co-workers, telling them what I can't say for real. *sigh*

So, fun news .. I was recently updating my stats and realized that I've passed my first 10% goal. Fun Now to get from 268 to 247 .... emoticon

Lorrie - I've been tracking religiously. It really helps!

Hi, everyone! Just popping in before bed. I still am not sleeping very well, so I was dragging today. I didn't make it to the gym until my DH came to relieve me at the kiddos' gymnastics classes. Once there I just didn't have it in me. I did my upper body strength stuff, but couldn't make myself do the cardio. So, I got in about 35 minutes of strength. I'll have to double up on the cardio tomorrow.
I hope everyone had a great day! Please cross your fingers for me that I sleep more than 4 hours tonight...in laying down in 10!

Ding ding, ding!!! Correct answers! When you loose15 pounds and enter it into the SP weight tracker, the system will pop up a caution to evaluate your fitness settings because the calorie ranges won't automatically adjust as you loose weight. The same is true with the fitness settings needing adjustment if you exercise times or levels of intensity change ( up or down).

How is the tracking going? Any questions?

Hello everyone,

Just here to answer this weeks question.

"What is very important to change regularly, if you want to manage your weight effectively? "

I think the answer is to change your fitness routine. Our bodies can can used to the same program and we can plateau If we constantly keep our bodies guessing we will keep the weight loss moving in the right direction.

I think Candace is very appealing. I am not as enamoured of Meryl as most people are, but I wouldn't have awarded her the gold medal, either. I like ... I can't remember her name - no legs. I enjoyed Drew Carey. Charlie is sweet. It's a really good cast, so I like all of them.

A blc team of just us might not get the results we want. Charity and I are on the sassy shamrock sheriffs team this round. It was my pick. They are way more intense than the team on last round. Learning a lot.

I think the best dancer is Meryl. I am rooting for all of the reminder stars because they have put so much effort into the show. So glad that they seem to be having fun in the journey, regardless of the judge and audience vote influence. Who is your favorite?

Hi team!
I forward the BLC info email to Jen and Cat. If you've both joined the Mailing List team, that's all that is needed for now. They send an email about once a week confirming new members. Mostly you have to hang out until about 4 weeks before the start of the next BLC round. They'll email you again letting you know what the next steps are to take (pre-challenge training). The leaders are AWESOME!!! Its well organized and a CHALLENGE.
BLC teams are the next step up from this the 100+ team's challenge activities.

I LOVE watching dancing with the stars. No way I could every dance that good. I applaud the coaches who invest into the stars. The skills and competition are so high this season. Its exciting. I used to feel guilty about spending the time on the couch watching all of that activity on the TV so now I walk the treadmill when I watch the show.

It's a 12 week Biggest Loser Challenge. I searched for it...I got onto a mailing list when I first rejoined SP, then they set up a training team that was private and Spark Mailed invitations to those on the mailing list team, then they arranged a bunch of teams to start the challenge. The official challenge started last Wednesday.
Lorrie would be able to describe it better...I think she's been in for a few rounds! I love it so far...it's really made me focus on my health.

Good morning, TEAMMATES!!

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. The BLC Challenge is taking up a lot of time! It's worth it though...I weighed in at a 4 pound loss today! FINALLY the scale is being friendly! Tomorrow is my "official" weigh-in, both in SP and BLC...hopefully I'll be able to squeeze out a few more ounces. I know 4 lbs. seems like a lot, but I really amped up my exercise this weekend and have been strictly tracking my food.

I've been lax on the food tracker until last week. I just didn't want to face what I was eating. Even now it's not great...I'm within my calorie range, but my choices could be much healthier. That has more to do with me being so picky though. I wish I liked more kinds of food, especially "mixed" foods, sauces, cooked veggies...That's why I've never done anything like Jenny Craig or NutriSystem...all I'd eat is the pepperoni pizza. I'm reluctant to share my tracker because its embarrassing, but, you're right, Lorrie--maybe it will help me to be better.

I hope everyone else has a good weigh-in today and is having a great Tuesday! It's a thallus sunny here, after a week of rain, so, despite it being cool, it's a happier-looking day!

Lorrie - Thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad the challenge is helping you focus. It's funny how some random thing can get people fired up, and I say, when you find it, grab it, run with it, and make it work for you!

Nikki - I'm glad you're stepping up to the challenge! I'm in the 5% challenge, and it does help me to know that teammates are counting on me to stick to it.

Nikki - I agree with Cat. 10 pounds a month is a reasonable goal but it will take work and consistency. If you fall short, no matter what, DON'T GIVE UP!

Cat - Thanks for asking. I feel better in control since the start of the BLC25 challenge. I think mentally I'd given myself permission to relax (eat) during the BLC break. No bueno, especially when it was compouned by stress. I'm so glad that you are doing well on your 100 day challenge. 7 pound is a great result for 2 weeks.

Wishing our team the VERY best results!!!

Nikki -I think 10 lbs. a month is a solid goal, especially for those of us with a lot of weight to lose. Some people think we should all stick to the 1-2 lbs a week, and that's generally good advice, but I'm really fat and losing some weight quickly will help my health, my joints, and my quality of life. Good luck!

How are you doing, Lorrie? I just finished week two of my 100-day challenge. I'm down 7 lbs. and happy about that. I've had a lot of stupid drama during that time, but I'm trying to stay focused on my goals and not let the stress drive me to overeat.

Hello, All!
My goals...
I'm on a BLC Team as well, and part of our weekend challenge was to post our SMART Goals for the challenge period. Feel free to stop by my blog and check it out!

For this month, I'd really like to lose 10 pounds. I've had a rocky beginning, but think all of my tracking and becoming active (well, non-sedentary at least) HAS to kick in soon!

One goal I've accomplished: joining a gym and GOING at least twice a week (I'm planning to make that 4 days by the end of the quarter!)

Hey 2014 Q2 Challenge Team,
I've posted this week's bonus instructions. Sorry, I realized tonight that it was Monday and I hadn't posted it yet. Don't forget to weigh and post it to the challenge reporting thread. The first month's rankings will soon be posted.

Nikki - You are funny! Yes, irritability is definitely connected to sleep deprivation.

Interesting. I do think there is a hereditary factor. And I wonder about environmental factors. Maybe it's a perfect storm. I'm glad you were aware enough to recognize it in your son. I'm sure it made a difference for him to be understood by the people closest to him.

I thought the "973" was different, but after I posted, I wondered if it was MY memory that was faulty! (Or perhaps there are many MAZZIEs out there.) Anyway, I was gone for a while and am enjoying seeing who's around, meeting new people, and using SP as a support system, because I don't have it in my real life.

Have a great day, everyone!

Honestly, I think diagnoses are up because its better understood. I grew up in the 70's-90's. I never heard of Autism until Rain Man (there was the little boy, Tommy, on St. Elsewhere, which my mom watched, but I was too young to get it), and never looked at it until college. Even there, even in "Abnomal Psych", there were maybe 2 pages in the book about ASD, and all of it was about non-verbal kids, rocking and banging their heads.
My niece was always quirky. At first we thought, well, her parents can't get along, and were 18 when she was born. Maybe she was just reserved because of the craziness around her (lots...both were in and out of rehab). When I Googled her behaviors, I saw "Asperger's Syndrome" everywhere. When my son was born, spoke late, didn't make eye contact with anyone but me, and wouldn't cuddle with anyone but me, I persued a diagnosis.
Looking back, if bet my LIFE that my father has Asperger's, and that my brother was (he passed away at 34; see above) likely had PDD-NOS, my son's dx.
Back in the 80's, and before, my brother and dad were "quirky", "difficult", maybe ADD...
I think that dx are more common due to understanding. I DO believe that food and the environment play a role...I now live in a town with a steel mill; lots of heavy metal particles in our air and water, and pesticides in food. There are A LOT of kids with ASD here, higher than the national average. But, still...
I was tested...I'm not ASD, but have a lot in common...OCD, anxiety, and ADHD. I joke that I'm hovering just above the spectrum, which is why I connect so well with my son, and why, for some reason, kids on the spectrum are drawn to me. (Yeah, when I do parties at school, the kids I suspect may be on the spectrum flock to me...one boy in my daughter's preschool class talked my ear off at an end-of-year bowling field trip; he'd never spoken a WORD at school before that).

As for the sleep studies on Dateline or whatever...I noticed they didn't study irritability...that's huge! Lol!!

Aww, thanks, Nikki. New screen name, huh? Fun!

I don't like the SAHM stereotypes. I used to be a child minder when I was younger, and I could never do it. I would go stark raving mad! So don't take any nonsense from them about "doing nothing"!

I remember watching a 60 Minutes or Dateline or one of those shows about sleep. Researchers took healthy 20 somethings and denied them REM sleep. (It was in a lab.) And than tested them in time intervals to see about coordination, agility, and thought. Unsurprisingly, their responses deteriorated. However, the project had to be cut short, because without five days, they were developing signs of diabetes!!

Were I a doctor, and a heavy patient walked in, the first thing I'd do would be to order a sleep study and make sure they were sleeping enough.

emoticon Do you think we have more autistic kids today? Or are we better at diagnosing them? And if we have more, why do you think it is? Growing up, I don't recall there being many children outside the mainstream. Now, it's becoming almost an alternate norm.

Have a great day, everyone! emoticon

Cat: YOU should be proud. I'm not working, but I did...it's HARD AS HECK to balance home and work...YOU rarely enter the equation! Take pride in what you are able to accomplish. It's NOT small stuff!
I hate to admit this, but I think some, ok, most, of the exercise I get in is out of spite or frustration. I'm a SAHM. I have 7 hours daily to get in my exercise. I wait. I procrastinate.
My DH and kiddos are great, but they ALL say I do NOTHING because I don't work outside the home. Since my kids are both under 10, it's not fair to leave them stranded, not checking homework, packing lunches, playing, so I suck it up. I used to eat. Now I exercise. It's physically healthier, but emotionally...not so much. Eventually I'll find a balance. At least, for now, I'm choosing to live instead of hide!
And, you're right, the importance of sleeping well is SO unestimated. So are doctors' insistences for their heavy patients to lose weight NATURALLY. They're all about prescribing meds for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc, and thyroid issues, as well as shots for diabetes, but shy away from promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Lorrie...the meetings were ok. My son has mild autism, so, though he does well in school, there are issues. He has standardized testing coming up this week. Part of his autism is anxiety: he's been stressing about the "West Test" since he was in kindergarten...he's taking it for the 1st time in 3rd grade. So...meetings. Parent/child meeting introducing us to the test. IEP meeting for his autism. Parent/principal meeting for him not paying attention in math and throwing a pencil. (Improper and mixed fractions? He just "got" it, so chose to read instead...his work was 100% correct, yet they don't believe me when I tell them he's bored!), meeting because they checked his IQ...boarderline MR, despite, in 3rd grade, a reading level of 5th grade, 6th month, and a math level of 6th grade, 9th month, and some friends.
I provided research showing there were alternative IQ tests for kids "on the spectrum", but was denied. So....I just have to continue to supplement his education at home.
This all makes me want to curl up on my couch and eat like PAC-Man, but I'm not succumbing. I'm trying to release my stress and anxiety via exercise.

So...I'm not some role-model. I'm exercising to relieve stress, just as I did by eating before SP. I'm nothing special, I'm just some chick trying to be a better person and overcome her stress/anxiety.

(And I wonder why my dreams are insanely vivid and frightening? Lol!!)

Morning! emoticon

Lorrie - I get anxious, too. I never used to. I don't know if it's hormonal, chemical, or life circumstances. People really do treat me differently since I got fat, and it's taken a toll on my self esteem.

It's funny you should ask about sleep. The Bugg, while not quite Santa, does "see" me when I'm sleeping and knows when I'm awake. It can tell when I'm lying down vs. sleeping. I feel awful when I don't get a certain amount of lying down time, but I thought I just didn't need a lot of sleep. Buuuut ... I hurt my back yesterday and - don't judge me - took a left over pain pill from my surgery in January. Drugged, I slept a solid six hours, and I can't even tell you how good I feel this morning! I am definitely chronically sleep deprived.

I cannot even tell you how inspired I am by your story! That is an amazing level of commitment. SO many people would have faced those challenges and given up. I carry my weigh like an apple and seem to recall that 250 was my tipping point. Before that, I was fat but doing ok. After 250, my joints ached, my energy tanked, and life really changed. So I'm gunning hard for 250 because once I get there, a lot more doors will open up for me in term of what I can do. Ultimately, I want to get down to 130, but it will take time.

Does the extra skin eventually go away.? I mean, you're losing slowly and steadily, so that should be good for your skin to recover. Would you have surgery to get rid of it? I have such a large belly that it's a real concern for me.

Nikki - I hope the school meeting went well and that you get great sleep tonight. I've a tendency to worry and over think before an event like that meeting. Sometimes the worry and anxiousness will trigger eating off plan. It usually turns out to be less of a problem than I anticipated. Its happened enough times that now, I usually can remind myself to not get worked up before and wait to deal with whatever happens after (which I am usually pretty cool and calm about, as I am a fixer by nature).

Cat - Interesting sleep numbers on the bodybugg. Do the numbers relate to how you rested you feel in the morning?

Thanks for asking about my story. My highest known weight was 366. I had sleep apnea, no energy, was depressed and had lost hope. I'd tried every diet and continued to gain weight. My sweet sister convinced me to try adding some exercise. I was embarrassed so I started walking (at night) and then later added Zumba and then bike riding. It took 3 years to go from 366 - 280 lbs. I had developed diabetes at 280 lbs that caused the frequent bathroom wake-ups and lots of shake-ups in my diet and added 4 prescription medicines. Then had a second event with breast cancer and it revealed heart damage from radiation. That stalled my progress for 1 year but I didn't gain any weight.

I think doctors do know how being very overweight affects all of our critical health systems and how hard those changes make it for us in trying to loose weight; however, they sense that we will be overwhelmed by too much information, issues, and risks so they can only encourage us to make a change and start to loose the weight. It is hard to get started. Doctors know the statistics showing that most people don't follow through. If they start to loose weight, they aren't successful at keeping it off. Cat, I am so happy that you are on this journey and have 20 pounds lost already. Don't give up - no matter what! Its a long journey but SO worth it!

Currently, I am hovering between 220 and 225. Its been very slow for last 2 years, generally loosing about 20 pounds a year. I've been mostly clean eating and lots of exercise for last three years (2000+ fitness minutes a month including ST 3x per week). Even though the weight is coming off slowly there has been a huge difference in my body shape and fitness. Those last 40 pounds represented a change in dress size from a 26 to an 18. I've greatly increased my muscle mass and dropped the fat percentages. I have LOTS of extra skin on my belly but as the weight drops I am able to fold it over an hold it inside my clothes. The other big changes is in my levels of energy, stamina, flexibility, and strength. I am off 2 meds and reduced amounts on the remaining.

At 366, I couldn't do ANYTHING! I sat and watched life go by. Now, there isn't much of anything that I can't or won't do. I still struggle from time to time with emotional eating (hence the weight gain last week). We all will gain weight occasionally but I've learned to recover more quickly and get back to my program aiming toward my goals. Feel free to ask me any other questions. I don't have everything figured out but am willing to share my experiences.
