I think he will stay away from the drug trafficking, but he seems to be addicted to something - the thrill or challenge. I wonder if that would become an issue again at some point in the future. Or maybe the focus on getting the coffee plantation set up and running well will be challenge enough for long enough to keep him out of trouble.

I, too, was surprised the main character was a male drug trafficker. I think, by the end, Charlie was on the road to redemption. Will he stay on it? I hope so.

I was surprised when I first started the book that the main character was a drug trafficker. I quickly became wrapped up in Charlie's story and was happy he got a second chance. I believe he found hope and redemption at end of the novel. The truth will set you free!!

Do Charlie's actions at the end of the novel redeem him?

His actions definitely don't undo the damages caused to anyone in his past but it definitely shows he is on a path to change and do better in the future.

Reading Group Discussion Question 11

Charlie considers Paulina to be a good person. Can you think of ways in which she is flawed? Do you think she's too good to be true,or do you know of people who are like her?

I feel like I consider her to good to be true because of the people I personally have known in my life. No body is that good. However, I do believe people like her exist. Not common but they are out there, raising the bar for those of us who don't do enough.

I definitely wouldn't bring into my home. We have a different system here and probably a lot easier to bring a "bum" to the hospital. She definitely had the training and the supplies. We wouldn't have an IV available in our homes. Different system so I think plausible.

they both have great but different childhoods and are very loved. I think it is always better to not be completely pampered. You need to learn responsibilities. Learning compassion for others starts in childhood and needs to be shown by example. You don't have to have everything you want as a child to make it a great childhood--just love and the basics. I see too many kids that don't get those 2 things.

Reading Group Discussion Question 9

Paulina takes care of Charlie even though he is a stranger. Do you think this was a safe thing to do?is it something you would do if you had been in her position?

I would like to think that I would help a stranger. I probably wouldn't bring him to my home especially when I have a young child. I would take him to the monks or a hospital, 911 phone call is my preferred method. I have a couple of reasons for my answer, first I don't have medical training. I used to have basic first aid and CPR but it has been expired for several years. Second I have been raised to fear pretty much everything because I'm a girl, don't trust anyone. While it can be helpful it also hinders me. The environment and experience Paulina has is much different than my in.

Reading Group Discussion Question 8

Charlie spends a great deal of his time traveling, but until Paulina he insulates himself from the culture. Is this typical of most tourists? Have you ever traveled to a foreign country or experienced a foreign culture? How did you feel about the experience?

I don't consider Charlie a tourist. He was a business man on a job assignment. I feel like this lends to the insulation. Even England for school, it was a job trying to get the girl. My father traveled a lot for his work when I was growing up and he didn't get to sight see much. He was in London and only saw Big Ben from a taxi on way to and from airport. I've also traveled with him and he loves getting out, meeting people and seeing things / places. I personally try to learn about other cultures /people when I can. I especially love working with someone who has immigrated to America. I live asking questions about how they grew up, traditions, foods, etc. I especially love when they teach me a few words. I'm not very good and learning languages but I try. Best food at a pot luck I've had was goat made by a man from Uganda.

Reading Group Discussion Question 7

Do you think Charlie is to blame for Zaul's decisions and their consequences?

I feel like while he may have had influenced him because of the field of work he also tried to step up and do the right thing too by fishing and teaching to drive. The parents should have had a greater responsibility on the raising of Zaul, teaching him responsibility and accountability for his actions. I think the lifestyle the parents provided, the way they responded to his actions shaped him more. Charlie was an uncle figure who came into the family after the parents set up the basic pattern.

Honesty is very important. Even with bad news. Where would you draw a line as to what is okay and what is not okay to lie. (Planning surprise party different)

I think it's probably always better if you have someone like her even if there wasn't romantic love involved. I think he almost had that with the old man on the island, but the island still had a mix of people that his background would make him more likely to gravitate too.

I agree with you. He was in a good place no matter what. I have to wonder if Leena helped him get to that point or if he would have gotten there on own (setting love interest aside and looking only at her attitude and the things he experienced because of her)

Reading Group Discussion Question 6

How important is honesty in a relationship? Is it ever okay to deceive your partner? What if your intentions are well-meaning, and you are trying to protect that person?

I'm not okay with deceiving anyone. I personally had a miserable time lying to my mother-in-law while planning a surprise party for her. It was with good intentions and she forgave me for lying but my nature was struggling with myself the entire time. (party was a blast and she loved it)

Reading Group Discussion Question 5

Charlie has relationships with three different women over the course of the novel. Does he end up with the right woman?

I think Leena is the woman he will be most happy with because no secrets, she forgave him his transgressions against her and her family (even before he bought back the farm to make amends).

I feel like he was not ready for a relationship before. It could have worked with either Amanda or Shelly but none of them would have been happy.

Reading Group Discussion Question 4

What role does money play in the lives of each of the major characters - Charlie; Amanda, Marshall, and Brendan; Colin and his family; Hack; Paulina and Paulo?

Charlie - I feel like money (or more the pursuit of it) was a replacement or distraction for relationships. As he gave away his money, the better his relationships became.

Amanda - I feel like if Charlie had said let's take off and leave your daddy's money behind she would have gone and she could have been happy. Because he didn't, she allowed Daddy to control her (and maybe Brendan)(maybe she controlled Brendan). I wonder of when Marshall dies and she takes control of the business if she won't take it in another direction, more kind and generous or if she will maintain the same cut throat behavior.

Marshall - he abused the power money gave him. My opinion is he's an evil man looking to fill his pockets with all the money without a care for who he used or destroyed (including his own daughter).

Brendan - craved the power Marshall had but I feel like he is never going to get it, that Amanda will take control when Marshall dies.

Colin and his family - I think money plays one role and how it is aquired plays another. Colin had legitimate business in addition to the drugs. I wonder if the party lifestyle was part of the money in general or the drug world. Also, how it influenced parenting style is only part of the equation. Maria and Zaul were raised in the same environment yet only one chose a dangerous path. I don't think money is to blame, that Zaul would have had a troubled life even if they were poor.

Hack - he clearly had money, learned that it was not worth the trouble like Charlie did in the end. He even tried to tell Charlie.

Paulina - she knew what it was like to have money for a while. It's not cheap to go to school in the United States. She also knows how to survive without it.

Paulo - he clearly had to work very hard for everything he had. Given the description of his build and the jobs he did.

I don't think you can truly keep them separate. Like you a lot of my friends are from work. I live in a small town and don't see how you can keep them separate. They need to be separate to a certain extent. No one on either end wants to hear your frustrations with family or work all the time. I could never keep them that removed from one another.

Reading Group Discussion Question 3

Charlie tries to compartmentalize his life, to keep his business and personal life separate. Do you feel this is a reflection of American attitudes in general of keeping our private and professional lives separate? Is this a good thing?

I'm not sure how to respond to this. With the number of friends I have made over the years at work it seems a blurred line. I've also worked with family a few times so again, blurred line. Also I have been through a part of my life where my family knew not to ask about work because it was so stressed and I was absolutely miserable. I didn't want to bring home that negativity.

I think it explains things, but that doesn't mean I think it justifies things. You learn how to react to things during your formative years (that's why they are called formative I suppose). There are exceptions and some people will manage to become better people in spite of the rocky starts they had. It didn't help that he never seemed to form attachments to people who could make him a better person. I can cut him some slack for that.

Reading Group Discussion Question 2

Charlie had a difficult childhood. Do you feel this justifies his behavior as an adult? Is he more sympathetic because of his circumstances?

I've long thought that we develop with a combination of nature and nurture. That it is as much our environment and support group (or lack of) as what we are born with. I don't know if it justifies his behavior but it helps explain his decisions.

Reading Group Discussion Question 1

Which character did you identify with most, or who was your favorite character, and why?

I feel like I can identify with several characters from various points in my life. Maybe not as extreme but pieces and parts.
Making selfish choices, acting without thinking of consequences.
Trusting and lost, hopeful for a different ending that was prescribed for me.
Powerful and in control.
Caring and giving.
Blind sided and hurt.
Misguided.
Innocent.

I would like to be even more caring and giving.

I hate to say it or perhaps should say I love to say it. I got the book and found it so engrossing that I have already finished it. What a truly wonderful and moving story. I felt very connected to the characters. I am going to have to read more by this author. One thing I can say about this book club is that it has made some excellent choices in books--I particularly like that the books chosen are ones that I would not have chosen for myself but each and everyone has been great.
