I'm thinking I need to get more protein into my meals.......... even perhaps having a protein shake with a meal, instead of a soup. Some of them are full of rubbish - I need to do some research..........
emoticon
I've ordered some vegan protein shake powder on-line, and a box of Nak'd bars which make good additions to any meal - dates, nuts, cocoa.

that juice helps lower high cholestrole and good for the heart. Any thing good for you/ healthy costs more. Period. I usually look for the fruit during the holidays.

I'm not sure why Pomegranate juice has been so high. Maybe because it was new? Not in large production?

Seems a lot of organic and healthier food versions are high, much higher than a lot of the processed foods. Is that subsidies at work? Volume? Not sure?

But some of the organics are finally getting to similar prices, like when they are on sale. I think I have noticed that mostly with basic freggies like celery, carrots, apples. When I can, I prefer those.

I feel the same way as both of you. I try to avoid meds but all the medications/medical knowledge is there when we absolutely need it, we are lucky to have the resources :)

same with organics, I would and do as I can afford too but still can't most of the time... I remember when I read how wonderful Pomegranate juice is but when I went and looked it was about $5 for 6 or 8 oz... still in the gourmet pricing... If it ever comes down, I'll use it...

We do what we must do, and can't fret the rest, eh?

girl I want that too. I was off meds for diabetes for 7 years. So the way I figure I put up a good fight. Now my body needs some help. I was down on medication too. I looked at as a failure. But I have a change of heart. I had to drop the perfectionism attitude. I need meds now and that ok. I am still fighting just with some assistance. I am cool with it. I know I am not alone in this battle. God is with me. My healing just has not menifested as of yet. I am believing and waiting. Thank God I can get the meds...some don't have them and need them. I am blessed beyond measure.

I try and avoid medication.

And, unfortunately, I don't find organic foods in my budget either - wish I did. I worry about how I've ramped up the veggies and fruits, but don't know what all was used on them. Love it when I have pears this time of year from my pear tree that hasn't been sprayed, and veggies from my garden. I know what is in them. But I don't have the time to plant a garden big enough to supply everything we need, and wouldn't have fresh things in the winter from it. But for a short season . . .

My guess is if you eat eggs and don't have high cholesterol 2 to 3 weekly would be ok for some. But all I need to do is to have to take another medication. Besides most medications have side effects. emoticon

No way can I buy organic I wish. I do find sales and try and buy what I can. I hope and pray my hd breaks up the ground and we can get out garden started. I saw a free range chicken in the store and it was 7.00 dollars. Now I could buy two chicken for that price. I am allergic to fish and I can get by with just a small amount. I have been reading Best Life Diabetic Management book and diet. I have not thought about buying protein sourced foods like tofu, sardines or beans, tuna I have so much to sort through though. Eggs I do not eat like I used to. But so much breakfast meats are full of salt/ Like bacon even turkey bacon is loaded with salt. Don't even mention pork sausage that stuff is poison for a diabetic. Then there is pepperoni, or canandian bacon. Man I did miss bacon in the past but I am over it. I want to be healthier.

I never heard about the need for diabetics to limit eggs. That is very interesting to me.

I limit them because of cholesterol, but I'm hearing more and more that the egg, including yolk is a the perfect protein - loaded with nutrition and all 9 amino acids. I know all the research, and it is more and more ambiguous. I find it hard to believe that something as natural as an egg is bad for us. I limit eggs to 2 or 3 per week, but when I eat them, I do eat the whole egg. I don't want to miss out on the great nutrients found in the yolk.

emoticon Grace, I was hearing the conflicting stuff on eggs too.
You're right, Diabetes is no game and I have been trying to sort out the info since like 2006.... finally have an answer I can live with...

emoticon Diabetes without Drugs by Suzy Cohen
Finally found the science/source info! I think this means whole eggs including yolks. She doesn't say anything about the egg whites only. In the book, She said (begin excerpt page 10 from the book):

Is it the chicken or the egg?
A Harvard study published in February 2009 found that people who ate an egg per day were 58 to 77 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-egg lovers. This study was large, analyzing 57,000 people. Eating 7 or more eggs per week will increase risk for death by 50% if you have diabetes, so go easy on them.

Chicken lovers may be on to something though. A small study done on 28 people found that those who eat chicken (and low-protein diets in general) enjoyed lower cholesterol and reduced serum creatinine, which is great news for your kidneys.

So, which is better, the chicken or the egg? If you're not vegan, I say both, just in moderation. Eggs are an inexpensive source of high-quality protein, and they contain important nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and good unsaturated fats. So, if you like eggs, just limit them to 3 per week or use them only for baking, like I do. Buy free-range egges because they have more nutriional value than factory-farmed eggs. And eat freshly cooked chicken or turkey, so long as it's hormone-free, lean and natural, not processed deli meat.

/end excerpt.

LIFEWALK I am hearing so many conflicts about egg yolks LOL. First it is yes then no. I do eat egg and yolks every once and a while. Other that that I eat egg white only. Diabetes is no game.

Those are some good suggestions..when is breakfast?? emoticon YUMMO!

emoticon yum! some gr8 ideas there! emoticon

i haven't tried steel cut oats yet but another SparkFriend was raving about them... As we get back into colder weather, I am thinking of trying.

This summer I've been enjoying Kashi with soymilk (both have protein). Other days, I'll have fresh berriers smashed in yogurt with protein powder stirred in to amp up the protein.

I love egg whites but as a diabetic have to limit the yolks, so use them in egg white veggie smelet or scramble over toast... when I have time to cook...

**********************

My favorite is Greek style yogurt with chopped berries, topped with 1/2 cup of Kashi Go-Lean (the original kind, which is low in sugar and high in protein) and 1/2 oz of almonds.

**********************

I get up at 5-5:30 M-F. First I drink 16 oz of water within 30 min. Then I have 1 of standard breakfasts about 7 AM: First I eat a serving of fruit. Then I have a bowl of Old Fashion Oatmeal w/fresh ground flaxseed and a sprinkle of light brown sugar (splenda makes it now) & 1 c. Skim milk, or 3/4 cup of Special K w/almonds or Total w/1 cup skim milk,

or a med. Fresh potato cut into small pcs. Cooked in olive oil, onion, red pepper and 1-2 eggs over easy or scrambled with onion, red pepper, spinach, and topped w/low fat cheddar cheese & 1 c skim milk. Then around 9 AM I have a morning snack of yogurt.

********************

Breakfast Burritos! I make mine with egg, black beans, tomato, (sometimes low-fat shredded cheese) and a low-fat taco size tortilla served with fresh salsa, avocado and a little sour cream OR "breakfast burrito" with Weight Watchers (or other) turkey sausage, peppers, onions, cheese & EGG BEATERS!!!

********************

Greek yogurt & fruit for breakfast.

Roughly 341 cal, 40g (45%) carb, 43g (49%) protein, 2g (5%) fat.

************************************

My current addiction: fage (lots of protein), sliced strawberries, 1/2 cup of Fiber One and one packet of Truvia. Super sweet so it tastes like dessert, a lot of protein and a lot of fiber!

**********************************

Steel cut oatmeal with yellow raisins, flax seed, almonds or walnuts YUM! I make the oatmeal once a wk. & put it in the fridge to save time in the mornings. ( a protein shake can be added for energy to sustain a workout, as I find oatmeal doesn't carry me being hypoglycemic) glory
