Thanks for the encouragement CS4JWS! emoticon

It's hard not to feel a bit self-conscious at the gym when I'm surrounded by the hard-core gym rats. But then I realize why I'm there and I get down to business! emoticon

To heck with what they think! emoticon

Plus, I was happy to see some other folks there who were like me -- just plugging along on the treadmill. Good for them! emoticon

Good morning everyone! I'm still feeling pretty good today. I did The Biggest Loser Last Chance Workout this morning and I'm planning on taking a short, slowish walk this afternoon just to be outside. Day 2 tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it since I fixed the file on my mp3 player.

Good moring all,
Just wondering what everyone else is doing for exercise on non running days???? I did 15 minutes on the bike this AM, followed by abs and strength training with weights on my exercise ball and LOTS of stretcing. I'm planning on another 20 - 30 minutes of cardio after work too. I hope you all have a great day!!!

YAY! I get to congratulate you again on completing W1D2...shin splints are awful, but here are a few tips I have learned along the way (even when I was walking and getting them)...

No stretching on cold muscles. You should always do your stretching after you exercise, and stretch to the point of feeling it, but not to the point of pain.

I have watched the video of the lower body stretch for calves, and those are the stretches that I do. I do a lot of sitting on the floor and flexing and pointing my feet to stretch out the calves and the shins, and I also do a LOT of rubbing them throughout the day.

I sit in front of a computer all day long, and I do my workouts first thing in the morning, and what I have found is that the longer I sit, the more stiff my muscles get....so I try to get up and do light walking throughout the day, just to keep them limber.

I also have a GREAT stretching DVD called Total Body Stretching by Cathe using a stability ball (which is one of my favorite pieces of equipment). It's a 13 minute stretch, and it feels GREAT after a workout. I also have a Tamilee Webb stretching DVD, but have not tried that one since starting C25K.

Tomorrow is my day of rest, so that may just be the very best relief from the shin splints I can get!

Again, congratulations to you on a job well done!

I am so thrilled that everyone had a good time doing W1D1...I just finished W1D2...it was more difficult than W1D1 emoticon But I finished it!!! I have got cramps and some pain along my shin...I hope it's not the re-appearance of the dreaded shin splints...I did the stretches and the warm ups though (followed Coach Nicole's lower bosy stretches and shin splint stretches)...
What is your warm-up routine like?? What stretches do you do?

Carpe Diem!!

Hi Beanpod...

I have found, the past few days, when I have been updating my Ipod, that the Robert Ullrey podcast hasn't been updating properly. It continues to give me an error about the url not being found, so I wonder if that podcast is still having issues.

I will admit, I checked out the other podcast from Hopetolose, and LOVED it much better, and will be using that one from here on out...MUCH better songs!

Good luck on D2 tomorrow for you! I can't wait to hear all about it!

Congratulations on completing W1D1 Ms. Peabody! I give you a lot of credit, I have to admit I am way too self conscious to even GO to a gym...much less run at a gym.

Someone had asked me if I had a 5K in mind for my 'goal', and I was honest and said that my goal is just to be comfortable exercising/running outside in public. I am really proud of you for looking past that!

Congratulations again, and best wishes on D2 on Thursday!

Hope this is the right place to post this. emoticon

I started today (3/16)...I've never run before so I chose to use the "Personal Running Trainer" 1 mile program I downloaded from iTunes.

I went to the gym after work. I was a bit self-conscious about running, what with all of my jiggly parts, but I got over it pretty quickly emoticon

Wow, I can't believe I completed W1D1! Yay me!!! emoticon Am looking forward to Thursday, W1D2.

Hi Hopetolose! Welcome to the group! Of course you can join in the fun! We certainly are having fun that's for sure!

I am actually checking out the podcast that you have listed, as I am using Robert Ullrey's podcast from Itunes, but so far am liking your link better...has a better variety of music!

Congratulations on completing W1D1, and look forward to cheering on your progress!

Hey, can I join in the fun too?? I started W1D1 yesterday (the 15th) and am "itching" to do D2, but will try to hold off until tomorrow:) It was difficult, but I felt so good when I officially completed it...YEAH me!!

Yesterday I timed myself, but today I rewarded myself with a new MP3 player and can't wait to try out the podcasts. I downloaded mine (free) from www.runningintoshape.com/5k-training-downl
oads/...are the others better??

Looks like everyone is doing great!! We can do it together!!

I did W1D1 today-or at least a close approximation. I never checked my mp3 player and when I got to the trail, I realized it never loaded correctly. I almost cried I was so disappointing, then I almost went home to try and fix it, then I decided to suck it up, turn on some music and just go for it.

So...I put on my workout play list and counted off my intervals as I walked/ran. I ended up doing 2.6 miles in 30 minutes (a 12 minute mile). I'm still counting to 60 and 90 in my head!

I'm feeling really good and I'm looking forward to doing day 2 on Thursday. I've finally got this weeks program loaded correctly and now I know to check it before I try to run.

Good Luck to everyone else that started this week!

I'm not sure if I am the appropriate one to respond, but I did start this topic, so I hope it's okay...

I think, if you started on the week of March 15, you could continue to post here....I am not sure if I will move on to week 2 next week, but will continue to post here...

I kind of like this group that we have created.... emoticon

Thanks ICanFlyToo! I'm so excited I hit my target weight. 58 weeks and 54 pounds! I'm just really glad I stuck with it when it was hard! Same thing I'm going to do with Couch to 5k.
QUESTION: So if I do need to repeat Week 1 do I stop posting with this team and start again next week... or just keep posting progress here?

I did W1D1 last night.
I ran into technical difficulty... I only had Week 5's workout on my ipod. So I winged it a bit. I did intervals, but I'm not sure how long each of them were and I wasn't really able to run as many intervals as I should have. I walked a couple.
On the upside, I did my briskwalking 5 minute warmup and cooldown, 3 running intervals and briskwalking the rest of the time.
Normally, I would have just gone home when I discovered the problem, but I didn't.
Looking forward to see if the timing helps me out or not tomorrow. I may need to re-do week 1! I wasn't expecting that!

I just completed W1D2 (I know I was supposed to have a day's rest..LOL)

It was pretty tough, but I was able to increase my speed a bit, and I really feel accomplished!

Deb - I have never been a runner either, and this is all new to me as well...but it is SUCH a great sense of accomplishment...and I hope you feel the same way! I will be doing some extra stretching throughout the day as well, as my calves are burning right now...LOL

Congratulations to everyone!

Hi Beanpod!

I know what you mean about being nervous...I am SO nervous about it!

As far as the podcast, when I went and got it, I used that link. When I tried it tonight, I got the error message as well, when I tried to shorten it, I received a message that the site was temporarily unavailable.

If you use Itunes, I put in 'Podcast for running' exactly like that, in the search box, and it brings it right up. It's called "Podcast for Running" by Robert Ullrey.

I hope that helps!

Good luck to you this week. I am looking forward to hearing about your success!

ok, i'm GOING TO DO THIS. i think i can handle the intervals, and i'm really really crossing my fingers that my knee will not start acting up like it did the last time i was in a good running routine. honestly, i thinking running where people can see me is going to be the hardest part. but i'll have to deal with that. i'm so happy to have found this team to get my going on my running goals! emoticon

I am officially starting March 15, and would love to buddy up with anyone else starting on the 15th!

I will be doing it on the treadmill to start and then when the conditions are better outside will transition to outdoor running!

Look forward to 5K-ing with others!
