I'm probably different than most but I drink at least 2 (if not 4) glasses of water before I run (intervaled) and if I eat anything it is fruit and only fruit up to 30 minutes before the run.

After my run I will also eat fruit immediately and drink more water. About an hour after that I will drink a cup of coconut milk.

I learned this while in the Corps. During boot I was eating the typical Marine Corps recruit breakfast - which was anything they were serving. I was also falling out of runs. Unbeknownst to me, you could only fall out of a certain number of runs before they recycled you to the group behind you (which added another 2 weeks on to your boot time). So our series Lt called a group of us in and said if we fell out of one more run we were getting recycled but that she didn't want that to happen to any of us so she was going to give some advice. She told us if we were going to eat to only eat juicy fruit.

Guess what ... it worked! None of us that followed her advice fell out of another run! I've been following this advice ever since and it's worked well for me.

I also run early, so I try to drink at least one glass of water before I go and then I have breakfast and coffee when I get back (after I cool down and stretch). I try to make it balanced (lately I've had Kashi GoLean Crunch with fruit and milk) to help me get through the day

I usually eat breakfast, have a few glasses of water, and an hour later I start my run. If I don't eat enough protein before I head out, I have trouble with keeping my pace.
A Camelbak is a great idea...I need to invest in one!

Thanks for everyone's replies so far, so it seems like the majority of you eat a little something from a hour to a half-hour before you run. I try my best to at least eat a piece of fruit (apple, peach, orange, banana, etc.) and at least a bagel or light oatmeal to go. I try to drink at least 2 glasses of water before I head out, and I have my own Camelbak for when I am on the go. I wasn't sure what to eat thereafter, but I generally have my protein shake and a light lunch of a sandwich to go with!

I am an early morning exerciser (4:45 AM) so I don't usually eat until after my workout. I keep a bottle of water on my night stand and drink throughout the night if I happen to wake up. I also drink water before and during my workout; I just don't eat until after. On the weekend, if I am running later in the morning, a protein fruit smoothie seems to work best. It gives me the energy I need without causing any stomache issues from eating something too heavy.

It depends on when I'm doing it.

I have either a meal or a snack about an hour and a half before and then have whatever is coming next after, whether it is my next meal or just time for a snack.

I have a cup of cheerios with 3/4 cup of milk about a hour before I run.
I drink 1/2 a serving {1.5 scoops with 12oz of water} of a Protein Shake after running/exercise. I save the other half for a later afternoon snack, it helps with the 2pm-3pm munchies.

I eat a piece of fruit 30 to 90 minutes before my run, a cup of chocolate soymilk immediately after, and a meal based on lean protien about an hour after. My big thing is water - I try do drink 2-4 cups of water in the hour or so leading up to my run, two more while I'm at the gym, and at least two more in the hour following.

ETA that I work out in the early evening, after classes but before dinner.

I would eat a Luna Bar about half hour to hour before I ran then afterward...glass of strawberry milk.

This might be a pretty typical question, but what do some of you like to eat/snack on before and after running? Are there foods I should pay attention to in my benefit of keeping energy while running?

Also, how much of a wait should I set up to eat something before and after running? I believe I've read somewhere that you should eat something light an hour and a half before you go running, but I would like to know from the people of this community on your tips and tricks! Thanks!
