Went up another lb this week. I think part is all the holiday stuff and not enough exercise. Will have to get out and start walking again along with other things I was doing in the past. Also need to watch those calories again.

I've added another group's challenge for January and just realized late yesterday that I haven't been on this board in days. Oh, shoot! I love being here, especially with all the new faces (to me) along for this ride.

About weighing -- I never used to do it at all (does that sound familiar to anyone?) and then I gravitated toward only when I needed to. Over time I just went to daily, the same time each day under the same conditions. A short while ago, I tried doing it weekly and that daily deal was too hard of a habit to break so I'm back at it. The reason I do it, I guess, is that I get immediate feedback on the consequences of my actions the day before. So if I'm up slightly, I'm pretty sure it was due to more crackers and cheese than I needed, plus not getting in very many steps. And the opposite when the numbers are lower.

In any case, if you find yourself obsessing over the scale number, that's definitely not good. But if you can treat it, like I try to do, as a kind of objective indicator of your actions, it can help in readjusting or continuing those actions.

Very light freezing drizzle here already this a.m. Not looking forward to doing errands unless the sun comes out and warms everything up a bit more.

Welcome to those just starting!

I am a daily emoticon person. In the past I have cheated myself when the scale went in the right direction. This year I am determined not too! So far so good! I have been yoyoing for years and need to put a stop to it this year!
Today's scale was a little up but I am not panicking like I used too--I am not worried because everything I am putting in my mouth is good stuff. No buckets of ice cream or chips or donuts or anything--I will do this! If it takes all year or even more I am determined to be strong and care enough about myself to get it done!

Well that is my rant for this morning! lol! And I probably needed to affirm my goal as I am going to Walmart to get painting supplies (I joined a watercolor class at the tech school) and there will be many temptations there!

I think all people are different and respond to different ways of logging their weight. I weight in daily. I do not think when I weigh in that is an exact representation of my weight. My thought is when I weight in daily I can see an accurate graph go how I have been doing. I can tell easily how eating a lot of salt during the day effects the scale the next day or when I do my weekly weigh in for this challenge was it one of my high days or low ones. Unfortunately the first day of this challenge was a very low day for me and I have not got to my beginning weight. :)

People are all different some like myself like statistics and like to analysis their weight loss. Others once a week works and I know many believe in only weighing yourself once a month. All are good and work towards the same goal.

Maurene2 and all.... hardest thing for me to do/remember is NOT to get on that scale during the week. Both doctor and fitness coaches have said to me that parat of the problem is that if we think we've lost weight, we cheat, and if we think we gain, we panic. Healthy things like water and veges and fruits are HEAVY and can make us seem artificially heavier than we think we are! So... yup Im trying to stick with the discipline of trusting the people who put the food calcs together and my following those and just keeping on eating what I should eat and moving as I should move... or at least that is the theory! Yesterday I SOOOOO wanted to eat other things... but I thought about, OK, I have ____ amounts of calories, nutrients, etc available... how can I treat myself with those! And I found some things I liked and I enjoyed them!!!!!!!!

Today is day five of diligently working my program. I stepped on the scale this morning (shouldn't have), and lo and behold! I have gained a pound!! Starting today, I am going to stick to the low end of my calorie intake for a while. Oh! I put the scale in the closet. Weight and measurements on Sunday only!! emoticon

My doctor and I'd been talking about how to make it easier to lose weight. One of the things we discussed was making my life more active, thus needing to "make myself exercise" less.

I've been doing Tai Chi for 2 hours every Monday for a year now - totally awesome and the cellulite on my legs is totally suffering! (That means it's leaving! LOL) My husband was the one who noticed - blush, blush :)

We've been doing karate together for 3 months now. WHAT A STRESS RELIEVER! Plus the benefits of self-defense, confidence, self-discipline, and many, many others.

We kayak on the weekends, and bike ride in the evenings.

It all adds up so that when I can't "make myself exercise" it isn't as damaging to my weight loss goal. I'm down 30 pounds and had hit a plateau. This challenge is right on time to break that. Thanks for being here I definitely need to be accountable to someone!

Haven't been on sparks since sometime in october... have had many challenges in the last 3 months and have seen a very large gain due to stress... now i have to tell myself "It is what it is" There is nothing i can do about it so I refuse to worry and let it get to me the way it has... so here is to a new year and a new me... lol... Finally, my first weigh in. I'd thought I'd be about 220, but it was worse than I thought... Oh, well, just a starting point - nowhere to go but down (I hope!). And I will probably do my weigh-ins on Fridays rather than Saturdays as the gym (where I do my weigh-ins) is very crowded on Sat and I'd rather avoid it!

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I wanted to let you know what's going on, in case you don't see me here much, so you know it's not because I've quit the challenge or anything like that. I saw my PCP, yesterday, for BP check and exam. I haven't gained, or lost, any weight. I'm still at 173 (same as I weighed 3 months ago, when I last saw him). Something's going on, and we aren't sure what ..... yet. I told him how I feel when I'm up moving around, and showed him my chart of what my BP has been doing. (BP went from a low of 85/53 when I'm very active to 135/90 at rest) When he first checked my BP, in the office, he said it was "too low". As we waited, he took it again and it went up, but not high enough - still low. He took it a third time and it was 144/90 - much too high.

My PCP is very concerned and is sending me to my Cardiologist. We aren't sure if it's my BP meds or if it's my heart (I have 5 blockages that I'll have to eventually have bypass to correct). We're hoping it's just that the medications need adjusting, but because one of the blockages in a stent that was implanted in July, and I can't have anymore heart stents, he's wanting to err on the side of caution. It has me a bit nervous because there's more going on that leans towards my heart but I'm optimistic and hope it's just stress that's causing the other issues. So..... if you don't see me here for a while, and if I don't answer any messages for a while, you know why.

I've been having a protein drink every morning and upped my calories to 1200 a day. Keeping carbs down as well. I'm still working on this weight loss and I WILL succeed! BTW, I did weigh myself this morning and the scales read 172! I know a lot of factors weigh in, by doing my weight check in the evenings (I think everyone gains some during the day) but I'm still lower on a morning weigh in than I have been in a very long time. Only managed 13 minutes brisk walking at the airport today, but it's better than nothing and meets my goal of exercise every day even if only for 10 minutes!

Back from out of town today; I hope... no, I plan to make it to the gym tomorrow so I can get my first official weigh-in. My scale at home is unreliable and I don't like becoming a slave to the scale anyway so I use the one at the gym when I need to know.

Low carbs and losing weight is key to controlling diabetes, but so is exercise....I've just got to find a way to get back into....I think it is important to at least walk for 30 minutes a day.

I did good today....stayed in the medium range of my allowed calories....had 110 grams of carb, which is not bad, but I should be staying lower to get this weight off and control BS right now.

What caused me to go over on the carbs? The Chick-Fil-A Cool wrap I had for lunch!

Holding good thoughts for all!

HDonohue, I also immediately thought the same thing, but don't want to pressure you. I have a close friend who was told by her doctor and a trainer to up her protein and her calories... and she was astonished to find her weight started to drop. They told her it was like needing to put fuel in an oven or it just won't cook the food! I guess we need to get our internal 'fire' stoked or nothing will melt off!. You also may neeed to explore some exercises to see what might help you get that area better toned -- there are things you can do even from a seated position. Proud of you for trying to work on this!

Wow, we have quite the group. Don't worry if you are joining a day or two late - no worries there! No time like the present to get on board.
HDonahue - I would have to agree - I think your calories are probably too low. Even though you may not be very active, then keep them in the low range, around 1200. But bump it up a little and see what happens. If you start to gain, then you can always adjust back down. A lot of this is trial and error.

HDonahue, I think I'm with your daughter on the calorie intake. Have you checked that level with your doctor? Most health professionals don't recommend fewer than 1200 calories a day for anyone. Often what happens is that your body thinks it's in starvation mode so it slows your metabolism in order to slow the weight loss. And what weight loss you do experience often comes from muscle rather than fat. If you haven't checked this out with your doctor, please do!

I am a few days late but I am in! I have changed my name to realitychaser. It used to be junkfoodfool. but everytime I signed in it made me think of all the junk food I was trying not to eat so I changed to something better.
