The rule of thumb I have heard is that you need a foot of root ball for every inch diameter of the trunk. That seems a little extrememe to me, not to mention heavy! You can certainly buy trees with diameters larger than that in a smallish containers. I would say, get the root ball as large as you possibly can, wrap it with burlap (or landscape fabric or an old sheet or something), don't let is dry out at all. I would have the hole where the tree is being moved to prepared already. I don't know about gardening in FL, since I live in the frozen tundra of NW Illinois, but I would say you should water it thoroughly every day for a couple of weeks at least. Good Luck!!

dig around the tree. make sure to get as much of the root ball as you can, sides and bottom. dig a bigger hole than what you dig up. I usually back fill the hole with peat moss and mix it with dirt in the new hole, I also sprinkle some fertilizer in the hole and mix that also. It helps the roots to establish in the new hole. back fill tamp down around and water in well. I'd also keep it moist for a few weeks to help roots make new shoots.
