Some of my plants are starting to die from the heat. This is the 33rd day in a row of 100 plus weather. The zinnia seeds I planted have resulted in foot long flowers. Very interesting. Will have to post pictures.

my lettuce is starting to come up. Not a whole lot but some. had our yearly get together with friends (about 20 this year) and everyone was commenting on all the work we have done in the yard. That felt good. will post pic soon.

This heat is going to kill my container plants. It's 103 right now and there have been, I think, 17 days of 100 plus days so far. This is the second hottest start to summer since 1980.

I updated what our work garden looks like. I guess I should have weeded it first - was hoping some other work mates would be helping me in this - but I guess you know how that goes when you have to rely on volunteers.

Dallas has gotten some rain recently. We're in a drought, but it's not as severe as Houston. The containers have been doing pretty well with once a day watering, unlike the plants at work which should be getting twice a day watering.

Here in North Dakota, we're getting way more rain that usual. So the dam is not taking it well as places around us have had way more moisture than usual and as they release more water into our systems, we are seeing flooding that has not been seen in over 50 years. One city had 1/4 of its population have to evacuate. It's a tough time for many. Our gardening is behind because of all the moisture...farmer's planting too is way behind. Crazy year.

Deborah - the weather has been pretty nice here in So. Calif. It's been in the 80's and starting to feel like summer. I've been enjoying the sun and working in the yard. The yard is looking nice and flowers are starting to bloom

I uploaded my recent pics of my beginning pics. Houston actually got about 1.5 inches of rain this week. However we are still about 16 inches behind. Burn bans state wide now. No fireworks this July 4th unless we miraculously get a whole lot of rain. So it has been very challenging trying to keep my plants and yard alive and still keep within the voluntary water conservation.

How has the weather been effecting others?

CHERYLN - ůi can surely relate to your woes, emoticon Think I ripped every drawer apart in my place, looking for the cord to recharge my camera. With no luck in finding what I was looking for, till it dawned on me the cords were for my old camera and my new camera, which just plugs into a wall socket to recharge!

I took pictures of the potting I did 2 weeks ago, but for some reason I have been unable to download them. The disk in my printer isn't doing anything and I can't remember where the cord is to do it direct from the camera :-(

Seed packets have an expiration date usually at the back of the envelope. So at the end of the year when stores are clearing seed packets, check for the expiry date, before parting with you loot! Usually seeds have a 2 year life cycle, some of have 3 years.

That bathtub idea does sound cute. I think it's fun to incorporate things like that into the landscape. I have an old chair, that's about it. Those bed frame "beds" are cute too.

I spent about 9 hours in the yard yesterday, a good chunk of it was planting planters. I took pictures, but I'm not finished yet, so I haven't downloaded them yet. I'm anxious to see everybody elses. I haven't even snooped yet.

ok, I peeked a little, will have to come back and look some more, I'm impressed!

I have an old footed bath tub in the back yard. Last week I planted lettuce in it. I also have some summer blooming flowers in it. Had to put a few good size rocks in it to keep our great dane from laying in it. Looking forward to a good harvest.

Floods are really bad this year all over the North America continent. Hope you stay dry!

Stayed one Christmas, with family about a 100 miles away from our home. Upon arriving the early news was on. The news was broadcasting and showing pictures of the flooded areas, where we lived. I wondered all Christmas will we have a home to return to? What type of mess will I have to clean up, will anything be salvaged? The mobile home parks and low lying subdivisions were flooded could only see the rooftops.

An old contractor whom had lived through a few floods of bygone years, built a dike all around the subdivision. We didn't get flooded. Luck was on my side that year! My little girl was 6 years old. Scampering up the stairs, she was so excited "Screaming, "Mom, come see, Santa came, he's really real!" She was jumping up and down with excitement, holding up some home made mittens for me to see. To this day don't know who left those mittens but they surely made my daughter happy.

Thanks, Okanog. I bought more plants yesterday and potting soil, so this weekend for sure they will get potted up and pictures taken! Our community is fighting with a flood situation, so it seems that if I'm not working, I'm trying to help with that in some way or another.

Thank you, Dogstardaddy, for sending that email on where to find the pictures. I had no clue where to find them. I have not had a chance to do my planters yet. Am I too late to still be part of this contest? Wasn't sure if they had to be planted by the 15th or not?

thrift store shopping this weekend and found a new container I just have to plant something in. It's a little wooden wheel barrel and only cost me $1 instead of what the regular store would of charged me lol. So got to plant some more flowers for it. I have a lot more starters coming up in my already started planter pots.

HAHAROBYN ~ You can start by using seeds or baby plantlets. I started with baby plantlets as I like a little color instantly on my decks, it is where I dine and entertain from now till the first sign of frost.

This contest runs from May 15th to October 30 or first frost.
Upload your container planter picture/s 3 x's to the teams photo album.
1st A starter picture of your container
2nd How's your container growing? Progress report.
3rd Final picture of your plant container.
You can enter as many plant containers as you wish to. The more the merrier!
There will be three prizes 1st, 2nd and 3rd awarded by popluarity vote.

HOW TO ADD A PHOTO TO THE SPARK TEAM PHOTO ALBUM

On the right hand side of a spark team main page, there is a photo link, just under the
"View Huddle wall/HuddleNow".

1. Click on on the word Photos - it will pop up with a box, and under the box
2 .It will read "upload picture"
3. When you click that on, it will go to your photo's stored on your computer.
4.THEN it will read "Add New Photo" Click the add photo button
5. Wella! It travels magically to Spark Team Photos storage for all to see !
6. A comment box is just under your picture/s if you wish to add a comment about your plant container, such as plants used.

Note* I made the mistake by adding all my pictures at once and thought I could go back to edit descriptions, which one can't. Unless you delete pic and start again. With company coming and going all summer long, I may not find the time to delete and re-enter with plant description till September.

what a creative idea with the plastic forks. I found several holes in one of my gardens recently...thinking I must have gophers or something. I wonder if it would work for them? maybe not.

I looked online to see how I could keep cats out of my garden. I have already lost one watermelon plant and I didn't want to lose any more. I found a post in a forum that suggested plastic forks, point side up to discourage the cats. So far, they seem to be working.

Ok my hubby is on board with the container garden (I'm sure he's excited about this) so add me to the list and when the weather is happy I'll get started. Thanks!

Okay, now, I got potting soil today. Big Lots has a 2 cubic foot bag for $7.00. Way cheaper than Home Depot. I got all of my plants in and I have some pots with just seeds. I'm really getting excited about it. I don't care if I win anything since it's so much fun doing the planting. I had to add another plastic fork to my vegetable garden since there were some holes near my eggplant. I also added some flower, herb and vegetable seeds in the bare places.
I bought a gardenia for $3.98 yesterday and I got it put in a pot. Now it looks like so happy. It was pretty root bound. I also used my garden club coupon for some garden soil. It's on sale for $4.97 and the coupon gives me $3.00 off. It's the small bag, but I have one more garden spot I need to get prepared.
Let the game begin.

Great idea, I added mine. I wanted to work on my containers today, but it's pouring rain. I love it! Our power went out for a minute or two. I love the rain and even the thunder and lightning.

Debfromhouston... You can go to your spark page and edit it and add your state in your signature line if you like. That's what I had done for another group I'm in and have just left there. It is helpful it seems like to have a clue where everybody is from, especially with the growing things with this group.

Can we add next to each person's name the state they are from? Just thought it might be interesting to see how many states are represented, plus get to know where everyone is from.

I need batteries lol. I started a vegetable and herb planter with some marigold seeds in it and also planted a few seeds in another planter for a lot of flowers. Now as I said before I'm good with vegetables but suck at flowers. So I'm hoping to have success with these flowers this year.

Ok I finally got around to checking out this thread and after reading all the posts I want to do this too. Hubby usually says yes to most anything I do outdoors but still want to run it by him before I commit so he won't nix it. I have a cool planter that I have not had any idea what to do with for like 3 years. This might just "Spark" me to work on that. He's out of town for like a week so I'll have a final answer just under the wire of the deadline. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Bring on spring!!!

Cheryl from North Dakota, be glad you didn't apply just to get a discount. Home Depot doesn't give an employee discount. You can join the garden club and get coupons. The coupons they sent today are for roses and a buy one get one free planter. emoticon

I'll join in on this . . . . BUT, it's been in the 20s at night here this week (frozen water pails in the barn) so it'll still be a little while before I start planting. I always do some containers, and it'll be fun to take photos and watch the progress.

I used to have some gorgeous dianthus that came back for many years. After I lost those, I have not had any luck with them coming back from year to year and really don't see very many pretty ones anymore it seems like. I was tempted to apply at Home Depot this year just to work in the garden center...and hopefully get a discount! Has anybody had luck with those upside down growing containers? I tried some tomatoes in one last year and the few tomatoes I did get, never did develop into a good-sized tomato and very few of what was there.

I needed an excuse to buy some zinnias. I have some containers that I switch up each season. Right now, they have some dianthus and pansies from the fall. They made it through our tough winter. Of course, last summer killed off my two year old dianthus plants, but their replacements are almost as tall. I have one that has some marigolds trying to come up so I'll just work around them. You can't get more baby than that. I may try entering my container tomato I bought today. I just had to have some cherry tomatoes. I work at Home Depot as a cashier and I get to work in the garden center most of the time. It's really hard to not buy plants.

Sounds like FUN

I just bought four patio containers to put on our front and back decks yesterday, before reading about this contest.

Looking forward to getting some plants in, but we had frost again last night. Sure glad I didn't plant anything yesterday too! Amazing for May, huh?

CHERYL ~ Me either it still pretty soggy and new snow fell over night on the mountain passes. I plan to start buying plants in another week. Maybe it will be warmer then! I haven't even cleaned my decks yet. With all the new construction, going on the dust is thigh high to grasshopper! Mixed with rain yuck! Today would be a good day to tackle the decks but my arss has been glued to computer chair! That's it, 3pm already! Better get outside make an effort!

BARBSIDDIQUI ~

On the right hand side of a spark team main page, there is a photo link, just under the
"View Huddle wall/HuddleNow".

HOW TO ADD A PHOTO TO A SPARK TEAM

PS - Building a plant container box??? Hmmm, are there any carpenters in the forum to judge the construction?

I grow vegetables so is it ok if I do like herbs and vegetables for my container garden? Flowers and me just don't get along. they also seem to wilt or die or just start turning brown.

And how do we post photos in the message boards? or just use the 'add link' feature
to a web hosting service?

hmm, this is sounding like too much fun to just watch, your enthusiasm is contagious! While I usually do containers of some sort, they get neglected later on. Maybe this is just what I need to make that baby thrive all summer long!

Sounds like fun. Would definitely have to choose my own plants as the Texas summers can be brutal on some annuals. I can't have petunias during the summer, but they look gorgeous in my hanging basket right now. Count me in.

ZACHERYSMAMA ~
Great! This will be fun! I have a few planters to experiment with this year too! One is will be in a half wine barrel, one will be in a an old roaster pan and I don't what else I'll dig around for, to enter!
LECATES ~
Yes, any one can enter as many container planters they wish too! The more the merrier!

Sounds good, I have plants to start mine and will also look for a few more.
Can we do multiple entries? I have another pot I want to try some things in this year, also.
And a fountain type bird bath that I converted to a planter last year.

SARAHKL2 ~ Great to have you and others interested in joining the annual planter contest!

LECATES - suggestion - to choose our own plant.
Seems like the right way to go with the contest, because of the different climate zones.
Though, it should be started with baby annual plants.

Part of the contest is to see how fast each planter fills in over the coming months.
Such as:
First ~ uploaded picture of planted container and description of annual plants used
Second ~ uploaded picture of planted container - half way thru the growing season, a visual progress report
Third ~ uploaded picture of planted container - to be voted on for planters for 1st, 2nd & 3rd favourites.
CHERYL that's ok too, as we will need encouraging words from time to time!
FLOWERDALEJEWEL -
Yes, we will all start from scratch with baby annual plants, size of planter would be a personal choice.
Once everyone who wants to participate posts by May 15th, I will post a list of all who want to particpate.
Any late particpants allowed depending location such as if anyone lives up in a Alaska but can't plant till the end of May will be allowed to join in the fun.

Might be interesting----and we could make suggestions of good plants to use in containers---but maybe we just choose the contents on our own----not everyone has access to a large variety of plants

Are we talking about an already started plant or are we talking about planting a new one.

Would anyone be interested in having a container plant contest?

We could decide on a main theme as far as 1 or 2 plants, with the filler plants being of personal choice.
We could have sections for plant zones, such as south, west, east & north, depending if enough people were interested. We could share our growth rate ect., then at the end of the contest, we would post a picture of our efforts in the team photo section.

Suggestion:

Start of contest Date: May 15th
End of contest Date: September 30th.
