I'm on abilify as well and am worried about this. I started Lithium at around the same time though, so we are not sure what the culprit is. All of the drugs in abilify's class cause weight gain, but I've heard that of all of them abilify causes the least gain.

I know exactly how you feel. This is what I try to say to my doctor to find an alternative med.

Thanks for the information on Abilify ... I am currently taking epival and lamactil and perphenazine .. the epival, according to the pdoc at a metabolic clinic suggested I switch to Abilify instead of perphenazine and epival ...

She said the epival was the culprit ... one person here said it made her too hyper .. frankly I am pretty sedentary, so I could use a little hyperness lol .. .and if my pdoc was willing to cut down on it . to counteract .. then far better ...

We will have to see ..

As well I am looking at a high fat, low carb and moderate protien diet .. based on the wheatbelly book .. there is a group here ... I am hoping that will eliminate any carb cravings when I do take it ... as well I have thyroid issues which I am sure stem from the epival use .. anyway .. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who is currently on the high fat diet and what results they had

I don't gain on Abilify; I'm currently on it. Zyprexa made me gain 80 pounds in 3 months, no lie. It's a battle trying to take the weight off. Seroquel and Geodon made me manic. Lithium doesn't work. Anti-depressants make me more depressed. I'm taking Abilify only and it's doing well.

Thanks for the feedback! I was on Seroquel once...and only once. ICK! I hated that stuff. I take Lamotrigine with the Abilify and haven't had any adverse reactions as of yet. In fact, I seem to be resting better without having to take anything for sleep (been taking Ambien for 5 years now).

I was on Lamotigrine with Abilify - hmm, anyway, I had a bad reaction to Abilify -as it made me really, really hyper -- but the doctor says it was the dosage and wants to put me back on it. I'll have to think about it. I moved around so much on Abilify and didn't want to eat - so I lost a bit of weight on it.

Seroquel - OMG, AVOID. I was on it less than a week and gained 3lbs. I couldn't stop eating carbs. I had such cravings, it's almost impossible to describe. Additionally it makes you sleepy, so you're eating like there is no tomorrow and can barely move. NOT good for weight loss.

Hi Brenda,

I want to put your mind at rest - I was on Abilify for about a year and any weight gain was minimal. In fact I gained weight on most other meds but this one!

I'm sadly not taking it now as I needed another antidepressant in the mix and the one I was given didn't combine well with Abilify. I'm currently on Lamotrigine and want to switch back but my PDoc won't budge...

Having said that everyone reacts to meds in a different way but I can honestly say that Abilify didn't make me hungrier than usual and it didn't just pile the pounds on by messing with my metabolism so I hope you find the same thing.

A word of warning - stay away from Seroquel. That started the weight gain for me and Mirtazipine made me put on over 7lbs in a week!

Good luck!

Sam

I just started on Abilify about three weeks ago, and was saddened to read that it can cause considerable weight gain. I think the word considerable was the one that got to me the most. (Yes, the side effects says considerable)

My question to all of you is how do you combat taking a medication, like Abilify, that could possibly derail your weight loss journey? I know that if I lose weight, it could greatly improve my moods.

Thanks,
Brenda
