Supermarkets in general have a role to play. 50 years ago most housewives would walk to the local store daily and buy anything needed for that day. She was limited by what she could carry so bulk buying wasn't an option. However many families also grew much of their own produce. At harvest time there would be surplus to store. Families had to ration out the stored food throughout the year or go hungry before the next harvest. I think the problem of overeating is far more complex than simply the availability of junk food. You also need to consider the less active lifestyle that most now enjoy, the increasing portion sizes in restaurants and the effect of stress on our eating habits.

Article from the Washington Post entitled, "The growth of Wal-Mart may have made America’s obesity epidemic worse"

What do you think? Has the increased availability of cheap, junk food gone to our waistlines?

Two items in the news today:

There's a new FDA-Approved anti-obesity device called the Maestro Rechargeable System. Learn about it here and tell us what you think:

Also, Wendy's removed the soda option from their kids' meals (but not really). Read about that here: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-n

I don't know if my US friends could get it, but the BBC Horizon special this week was excellent. They identified 3 distinct reasons for overeating in a group of 75, then prescribed diets that would better suit each group. Low calorie and support for the emotional eaters, intermittent fasting for the constant cravers (those with a higher number of fat genes) and high protien, low GI for the feasters (people who do not produce enough gut hormone to say they are full).

This is the place to post any "news" updates regarding weight loss/management so that team members can have up to date information. It can be articles from newspapers or magazines or links to t.v. news. Info from newsletters that you find interesting.

For example, did everyone see this little tidbit about cold temps being good for burning "brown" fat?

Heck, until today, I didn't even know there was such a thing as brown fat!
