Bananas are another food that replenishes potassium - and you don't have to cook them!

Great ideas here. I haven't had a CH in a while but they are really painful. I always get them at night while sleeping too--never while running.

Thanks - I appreciate the tip on how to help when you have one in the moment!! :-) I usually massage the calf area (where I normally get them)...but I'll try the slow stretching, too!!

But only potassium in foods...do not EVER take supplemental potassium as too much potassium can cause a sometime fatal heart arrhythmia to occur. Most people cannot ingest too much potassium in foods, unless there is a health issue.

Since all the advice given thus far is how to prevent one... here is what you do when you get one!!!

The quickest and simplest (though not painless) way to STOP one, is to slowly stretch your leg all the way out, and slowly point your toe. It will hurt like hell, so take it slow. If you try to do it quickly, it will increase the tension makiong it hurt even more. Point your toe, then slowly flex. It helps to stretch the muscle out. It will usually work within 5 minutes or so. I used to get them ALL the time... in the am. Such an AWFUL way to wake up. Once it goes away, continue to point and flex your foot for awhile, and start massaging the calf muscle as well... it will help to keep it from coming back right away.

For prevention though, like other posters said, increase potassium and hyrdation... didn't know about the potatoes myself!

BTW--anyone know why it is called a Charlie Horse?

Thank you very much ladies!! I appreciate all the advice - I'll have to try the potatoes and the incline on the treadmill, too!

Patricia,

Also make sure you are running on a slight incline (1-2%)when doing treadmill runs, which may cause you to slow your speed just a tad. Running on a zero grade is like running down a long, descending down hill which can be very hard on your legs. Also make sure you do some good stretches of the calf muscles after your run.

HAPPY SPARK RUNNING!
Nancy

Muscle cramping is generally an indication of dehydration and/or low potassium levels. Make sure you're really well hydrated before going to bed and bananas are a good source of potassium, but an even better source are good o'l potatoes. Distance runners, especially ultra distance runners, will just eat boiled potatoes out on a long run dipped in a little salt.

Hope that helps.

RUN: 1 a : to go faster than a walk; * * * 2 a : to go without restraint : move freely about at will * * * 4 a : to contend in a race * * * 12 a : to develop rapidly in some specific direction * * * 14 a : to occur persistently. While the term to "run" is defined many ways, for me it's simple, it's a mind set, not a pace. I will RUN, I don't really care
