JULY 29th- emoticon De-stress your commute.

Less driving means less road rage. Instead of stressing out in traffic, relax as you ride a bus or train, carpool (so you only drive sometimes), or bike to work (to release stress and endorphins).

Liquid calories and solid calories, especially sugar, are read differently by the body. (Journal of Obesity Related Metabolic Disorders, June 2000)
This means that when you drink calories, you will take in more for the day, and that can lead to several metabolic disorders such as diabetes 2, heart disease and obesity.

The research experiment was a tiny sample, mixed gender, over three sets of four weeks. The first week participants had no soda but all the jellybeans they wanted. Four weeks were a “washout” phase resetting their metabolism, and the third was access to soda.
Researchers said that participants drinking calories had significant increases in weight and BMI (fir a four week period) but no difference in reported hunger.
Physical activity was the same throughout the study.

Yes, this means you are better off metabolically eating a 120 cal candy bar than a 120 cal soda.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.
What is your now?

emoticon What percentage of antioxidants does olive oil lose after 6 months of storage?
20%
40%
60%
80%

Answer & Explanation: 40%. A study from the Journal of Food Science found that olive oil loses 40% of its antioxidants after 6 months of storage. For the maximum nutrient benefit, many foods, including olive oil, must be used within a relatively short amount of time. The moment a food is picked and/or processed it begins to change chemically, altering the flavor, texture, color and even the nutrient content.

emoticon True or False: Frozen vegetables have fewer nutrients than fresh vegetables.

Answer & Explanation: False! Frozen veggies sometimes have a bad reputation, but they actually have just as many nutrients as the fresh stuff. In fact, frozen vegetables hold onto nutrients longer than fresh produce since freezing can lock in nutrients more efficiently than canning or refrigeration methods.

emoticon True or False: Eating food that was cooked in aluminum cookware can lead to Alzheimer's disease.

Answer & Explanation: False! Claims have been made linking aluminum to Alzheimer’s disease and other health problems, but these claims have been unsubstantiated by scientific research. In fact, according to the FDA, taking one antacid or aspirin tablet provides the body with far more aluminum than cooking and storing an entire day’s meals in aluminum.

emoticon Inactive adults who don't strength train regularly can lose how many pounds of muscle mass per year?
-0 pounds
-1/4 pound
-1/2 pound
-1 pound
-2 pounds

Answer & Explanation: 1/2 pound! Without consistent strength training, muscle size and strength decline with age. An inactive person loses 1/2 pound of muscle per year after age 20. After age 60, this rate of loss doubles. But, muscle loss is not inevitable. With regular strength training, muscle mass can be preserved throughout the lifespan, and the muscle lost can be rebuilt.

emoticon Vitamin D and calcium work hand in hand to fight the osteoporosis often associated with aging. How much vitamin D do most adults need each day?

-25-50 IU
-100-200 IU
-400-800 IU
-As much as possible

Answer & Explanation: 400-800 IU! Just a few minutes of sunlight a day can provide your body with ample amounts of vitamin D, but many of us spend most of our time indoors, especially during the winter months. A daily supplement providing 400-800 IU (international unites) of vitamin D can help to ensure you’re meeting your body’s needs.

emoticon Which of the following best characterizes the 'valsalva maneuver'?
-A yoga pose
-A heart attack
-A broken valve
-A mixed martial arts hold
-A breathing issue

Answer & Explanation: A breathing issue! Many people have a tendency to hold their breath during strenuous activity like weight lifting--a big mistake. Known as the valsalva maneuver, this breathing issue, which involves exhaling forcibly without any air actually exiting the body, can limit oxygen delivery to the brain and cause dizziness, fainting, a spike in blood pressure and other complications.

emoticon Walking alone might not be enough to prevent weight gain. Researchers from the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center say that simply walking for 15 minutes (or about 2,000 steps) and eating a couple fewer bites of food can help you prevent future weight gain.

emoticon Difficulty falling asleep is just one of four symptoms generally associated with insomnia. The others include: waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep, frequent awakenings, and waking up feeling tired. Insomnia can be a symptom of a sleep disorder or other medical problem, and can often be treated. If insomnia symptoms occur more than a few times a week and also impact your daytime functions, discuss these symptoms with your health care provider.

emoticon The recommended amount of calcium for male and female adults, ages 19-50, is 1,000 milligrams daily.

**Do you get your recommended amount in a day? I take a chewable supplement, just in case.

emoticon Any food that lists "hydrogenated oil" on the ingredients list does contain trans fats, even if the label says zero. A labeling loophole allows any food that contains fewer than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving to list "0" grams of trans fat on the label, so always check the ingredients list!

As to the calcium and D supplements, I just follow the dr's orders as they usually check me at my follow-ups. But, Vitamin D-3 is one that I'm always low on.

I'm on a calcium supplement as well.

Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt and soybeans provide all nine essential amino acids. For this reason, they are considered high quality or COMPLETE proteins.

Progressively overloading your muscles is the key to effective strength training. But increasing the weight you use too rapidly can lead to burnout, chronic soreness, and overuse injuries. A better approach for most people is to increase the weight (by about 10%) when you can reliably do the higher number of reps each time in good form.

Extremely large amounts of calcium over a long period of time can result in calcium deposits in soft organs, kidney stone development, or poor kidney functioning. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 2,500 milligrams daily.

Take care, my friend, and keep those walks coming. They're so enjoyable and great for you!

Vitamin D is known as the "sunshine vitamin" because it is made in your skin when the ultraviolet light hits your skin. If you eat a balanced diet and get outside in the sunshine at least 1 ½ to 2 hours a week, you should be getting all the vitamin D you need.

Vitamins actually function primarily as catalysts, regulating chemical reactions within the body. They are also essential for the release of energy from food. But they do not provide calories or energy themselves.

Your body can store energy from food for future use in two ways: 1) as fat and 2) as muscle fuel (called glycogen). Its first priority is to fill its glycogen tanks, because glycogen is the body's primary source of energy for physical activity. Once your glycogen stores are filled and the rest of the body's energy needs are covered, all the extra energy from your food will be stored as body fat.

To make sure you are getting 100% whole wheat bread, look at the ingredients list—not the front of the package. "Whole wheat flour" or "100% whole wheat flour" should be the first ingredient and the only flour listed. Don't fall for deceitful terms such as "wheat flour," "unbleached wheat flour," "multigrain," "enriched," or "stone-ground wheat flour." These are just sneaky ways of saying refined white flour.

You may have high blood pressure and not even know it. While 50 million Americans suffer from this affliction, 33 percent don't even know they have it, and 70 percent don't have it under control. High blood pressure is often referred to as the "silent killer." In general, it does not directly cause symptoms. When blood pressure is very high, it may cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue and ringing in the ears. However, it often causes no symptoms. The only way to know where you stand is to have your blood pressure checked by a qualified professional.

That is one fruit that I don't really care for. I'm one of those that would have to put heaps of sugar on just to enjoy. But, I love oranges and that type of fruit, but grapefruit always has that stronger taste. I've tried and even the juice, just can't get into it.

There is no way to target weight loss to a specific area of the body because your body decides where it wants to put on weight and where it wants to take it off. The midsection is a common "problem" area for many people. The best way to lose fat is through cardiovascular exercise. It is important to do a variety of abdominal exercises (including crunches) to keep your core strong, but until that excess fat is gone, you will not see the muscle definition.

Thanks for the prompt input MOMMA48. one of my nephews is always talking about hemp cereal etc. Must go to a health food store to check out chia seeds. Read in a blog today that aspartame can stay in your body for days & you can get sore muscles when you stop taking it. it turns to formaldehyde in your body. Spark really educates you in more way than one.

I tried the chia seeds and made the gel by adding water to the seeds. I was surprised to see how it turned out -- really kinda neat! I added it to my yogurt and it doesn't add a different taste as it's more of a neutral-type flavor. But, it's supposed to help the stomach form a barrier between carbs and digestive enzymes that break them down -- slowing the conversion of carbs into sugar. Plus, you can use it in baking also as a substitute for oil.

It's really interesting and I'm so glad you mentioned it, my friend. I love trying new things and chia seeds are now going to be on my list of healthy foods!

I went to the health food store and bought the hemp seeds (kinda pricy -- $11 a bag) and the chia seeds. I haven't tried them yet -- but the chia seeds, especially with the recipes and ways to use them that the owner gave me, sound super interesting and I'm ready to give them a try today! Also, as to the hemp milk, she said that she no longer carries it as she thought it was not that good, and she had tried different brands, etc., plus it was not a great seller. Otherwise, I would have tried it -- just to be curious. But, now that I know she didn't care for it at all -- I'm going to check out a few grocery stores and see if I can find it! Now she has me REALLY curious!
