What a great thread this is! I haven't been on SparkPeople in ages! It's way past time to be back. I am going to get some grape seed extract today and start taking it.

What a great site this is for support!

We've talked about Grape Seed Extract lowering blood pressure. Here is another product that does that as well:

Probably. The peanut butter is thick and sticks where you put it. You can rub in on thick and leave it standing easily. No mess.

REMOVE STICKER GLUE FROM GLASS OR PLASTIC

Scrape off label as best as you can, maybe after soaking in hot water a while.
On the remaining sticky area, spread liberally with PEANUT BUTTER and wait 10 minutes. Wipes right off and is sticky-free!

Sounds like you're cooking up quite a cocktail, Sandra! All of those things look healthy to me. If the cherry juice is concentrate it will pucker your lips, lol, so use sparingly.

The aloe vera juice blends well with everything. Helps lots of tummy issues.

Well, friends. Today I brought home a bottle of aloe vera juice and a bottle of cherry juice from supermarket health food section--organic, etc. I'm thinking of using my blender as much as possible for frozen berries, whey powder, maybe some orange juice and flax meal, plus these two latest things. Sound okay?

Last week I mixed white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. I am in love with it.
These are some of the things it works on.
Remove stains on clothing
cleans glass, fridge, smooth cooktops, granite, tile floors, stainless steel, windows and the kitchen sink.

Next I mixed plain alcohol with water and put it in a spray bottle.
I keep in the bathroom. It does an amazing job of cleaning and sanitizing for a quick clean up.

Then, I had an old flannel sheet sheet set that was too worn to use.
Found some cotton T shirts too.
I cut them into squares and use them instead of paper towels for cleaning and drying hard surfaces.

Hope you find these ideas helpful.
Let me know if you do.

Mint sauce is easy to make and goes well with roast lamb.
Ingedients-A bunch of mint leaves
2 tablespoons of honey
2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar

Pick the leaves of the stalks and chop them as finely as possible.
Then mix with the honey and vinegar.
You can use castor sugar or golden syrup instead of the honey if preferred.

Thanks for that idea, Joyce. You know, I have mint growing in a flower pot on my deck. I wonder if I could somehow incorporate that into my chamomile tea for added benefit? I grow it because it smells good, but never thought of making a tea with it.

Anyone have an idea how to actually use fresh mint?

Chamomile tea is very good for an upset stomach. Ginger root capsules, too. Both these things save me when I have nausea or stomach problems. I've been living on them for the past two days, lol, while I had a stomach bug. Ugh.

Knee Pain

My left knee hurts now and then and I've found two thing that make the pain go away!

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=363

These knee exercises are all helpful, but the #2 stretch, Heel slide knee extension, works the best for me. You can also do it while sitting on the sofa with your foot on the coffee table in front of you. Wear a sock so the heel of your foot will slide easily. I do this while watching tv.

The link below shows this knee band that I wear either below or above the knee, depending on the pain. I often wear it below for a few hours, then switch to above for a few hours. The band had a hard plastic tube in the center of it. You position this hard part over the front of the knee and close the velcro fastener in the back. This applies pressure to the knee, sort of like accupressure maybe.

I used both these techniques yesterday and by last night my knee pain was gone. This morning it's still gone.

Hope this helps you too!

Yeah, I'll second that everything you put in your mouth affects your health, for good or for bad.

Yesterday we were given a boxed cupcake to take home. Of course I couldn't resist it, and the calorie count left me just under my maximum recommended amount, do that didn't dissuade me from partaking. The butter cream icing was so rich with sugar, it tickled the roof of my mouth. And the rest of the story is the "for bad" in the saying above. I had higher fibro pain that evening and didn't sleep well. Even an old neck injury was hurting. So my moral is "sugar cannot do a body good." At least not refined sugar in a 60+ body that has been feeling pretty good about avoiding the stuff.

I want to put this notice here now and then for anyone considering supplements.

Before you take a supplement you've never had before, do a search in Google or on Web MD or the Mayo Clinic site, etc. to see if there is any interaction with meds you are already taking, or with conditions or allergies you may have.

I read extensively about anything before I use it on a daily basis. I don't take any medications so I don't have to worry about that, nor do I have any serious conditions like Crohns disease, etc. or any allergies.

Everything you put in your mouth affects your health, for good or bad, so be aware.

Karen

I just realized that the Aloe Vera juice is also helping my BP which has been lower lately even though there have been many days when I didn't get my exercise.

I bought another bottle of it yesterday at Natural Grocers and the check out guy and I were discussing gel versus juice. He said Aloe Vera has ended the stomach distress he gets whenever he gives in and eats sugar, which he loves but it bothers him a lot.

I'm just hearing more and more about how it heals your gut.

My daily healthy "cocktail" is a blend of beetroot juice and aloe vera juice (4 oz each) plus 1 tbsp of the cherry juice.

This has become my nightly "cocktail." Very refreshing.

Hi Karen, I'm reporting back on how the tart cherry juice is working. I added it to my end-of-day ritual of a warm bath with Epsom salt, and it passed the test.
emoticon
Even though the amount of yard- and housework I did yesterday typically would have prevented me from being able to fall asleep due to tight muscles (primarily a fibro symptom), I not only fell promptly asleep, but stayed asleep for eight hours without being awakened by pain.
emoticon
It's truly a delight to find that nature has provided for us better than the Tylenol 3 I keep on hand for the times pain gets out of control.

I mix the tart cherry juice concentrate with club soda for a sparkling "cocktail."
Thanks for the tip!

years ago I had that ringing in my ears and just assumed I'd have to live with it as so many said that would be the case: then I saw a chiropractor for my neck about three years later and after the treatment ...like a few days after..I realized I no longer had that ringing. It has never returned. She didn't know I even had that ringing. I asked her about it and she said sometimes when she works on a person's neck it does help eliminate that ringing. So...I'd try that!

Hi Karen, I'm definitely going to try the tart cherry juice ... and keep eating more of the healthy foods while minimizing those less-than-healthy items that are prevalent in American's diets.
I've weaned myself off the majority of my sugar addiction -- by substituting things like blueberries. Yum!
Thanks for your suggestions.

Joyce, I don't have fribro but suffered from chronic pain for a decade. I have found that the more I avoid sugar and starch, the less my joints ache.

I try to eat more veggies than I ever thought I would eat to fill in. The more veggies I eat the healthier I get. No one ever said "I think you have too many veggies in your diet" did they? lol

Also, those cherries I wrote earlier about may be good for some pain, too. You can read reviews on Amazon from people who drink the tart cherry juice concentrate and say it decreases their pain.

Hi all, it's just purified fish oil capsules (not cod liver oil) that have allowed me to reduce the amount of pain medication I need to hold the fibro pain at bay.

The fish oil (omega 3) is not an end all for pain, just a partial help. Maybe there's something else out there that works for others, so I'll keep reading this "remedies" string to see if there are other aids besides prescription pain meds.

I started taking fish oil omega 3 supplements for heart health -- lower triglycerides and reduce hypertension. I was surprised that after a month or two, I could reduce one of my pain medications for fibromyalgia! Woo hoo!

Viv, Congratulations on taking one less drug.

You may be more active now that you're retired and not stuck in front of a computer as much. More exercise usually means better BP too, so maybe you'll be off another one soon.

I have been taking 3 blood pressure meds for a few years, a few months ago Karen told us about grape seed extract for lowering blood pressure. I started taking it and this last check up my doctors took me off 1 med and said if it stays as good as it is she will take me off another in 3 months.
Information below, I buy from Amazon.
Thanks Karen.
Grape Seed Extract 100 MG they suggest 1 or 2 capsules a day, I take 2.
120 capsules are $14.29 on Amazon as I am a prime member I get free shipping.

Lecithin I take this to keep my Cholesterol levels good. It comes in capsules or granules; I use granules and mix a tablespoon into my yogurt in the morning. 5 years ago my Dr wanted to put me on meds I refused and did research, since taking this my levels have been good.

I bought mine at a health food store, (Natural Grocers) for $16.95 for a gallon of it. If you drink 4 oz per day that's over a month's worth. Or, like Viv, if you drink 2 oz a day that's over 2 month's worth.

Viv, A nutritionist at my local health food store just told me the same thing. I like hearing it reaffirmed from someone I know!

I mix mine with a tablespoon of concentrated cherry juice or half and half with organic beetroot juice with a squirt of lemon juice. Either way it goes down well.

I'm really glad you mentioned Aloe Vera juice!

For gastric and intestinal problems drink 2 ounces of unprocessed Aloe Vera juice a day.
20 years ago after my second surgery for chronic diverticulitis I did research and found this suggestion, I have been doing this ever since and have not had any problems. You can buy this at Health Food Stores.
It is a little greasy but I just drink it all at once.

last winter I read..not sure where..to use a cup of epsom salts and a half a cup of baking soda to the bathwater.. for aches, pains, to relax...and I found that does help. When doing gardening the past week with the knees and hips aching I did the above and just laid back in the tub for awhile, read a bit and felt wonderful!

I also ..now and then..buy pure cherry juice to drink..it's a bit pricey.. found it in the health food section of our store..HyVee. I did that cause I read it helped with insomnia and was also good for the heart.
and well, it did seem to help with the insomnia.

My mother used to take baths in epsom salt. For me the problem is the bath itself: I HATE baths! Now if there were some way to put it in the shower, maybe.

And speaking of inflammation . . . You can read anywhere that it causes almost all the problems in our bodies in some way.

A little over a year ago I had my blood test include C-Reactive protein, which is a marker for inflammation in your body. Mine was in the "good" zone, but just barely. It was right at the top. I eat a lot of cheese, not sure if that plays a part.

Anyway, as spring began, I started buying fresh cherries and eating a cup full every day. I read that tart cherries had a super-duper antioxidant in them, whose name I can't remember right now, and are good for inflammation.

Not sure if I was really getting "tart" cherries, I was just buying the only fresh cherries available in my grocery store. I ate them daily all summer long.

By September when I had by next blood test, my C-reactive protein was listed as:
"TOO LOW TO MEASURE" so I asked my doctor what it meant because I'd never seen anything on a blood test listed like that.

He confirmed that it meant what it said, my C-reactive protein was so low now it didn't show up in the test in a measurable amount.

I buy fresh cherries now, whenever they are available, no matter what they cost.
When they were out of season, further reading led me to believe black grapes might have a similar effect and I started eating them. Haven't had a blood test yet. . . Maybe soon.

I'm definitely a "Food is Medicine" woman, lol.

Thanks for starting this, Karen. I'm sure people will benefit and I hope it is popular.

So far I almost never have any stomach problems but who knows? I pop probiotics every now and then for good stomach flora and perhaps to fight inflammation. More and more scientists seem to be zeroing in on inflammation being the culprit in many diseases.
I often drink lemon-ginger tea but the ginger in it is probably slight and maybe in future I will make the tea with real ginger!

And I just read an article this morning that says Epsom Salts in a bath or to soak your feet gives your body the extra magnesium most of us need.

A nice way to get a supplement!

Thanks for mentioning this, Joy!

A Warm water Epsom Salt bath does wonders for painful or tight muscles, not to mention, it's relaxing for the soul. Sore, tired feet? Try just a foot bath this way. Divine.

MOTION SICKNESS AND DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

I usually buy Nature's Way Ginger Root but other brands have worked as well. I get it at Walmart, Walgreens and online at Amazon. It is inexpensive and comes in capsule form.

I have severe motion sickness. Watching the rubber ducky in the bathtub when my kids were little made me nauseous, lol. I could never read in a car, etc, no ride in a plane without upchucking. (Made for some fun trips, lol. And someone once told me I throw up gracefully! HA!)

I tried the ear patch prescriptions and Dramamine. Both turned me into a zombie and gave me a mouth full of cotton. Finally I discovered ginger root.

I take two capsules with a large glass of water, before I fly, then later when I'm flying. I also take before I get in the passenger side seat in a car to go anywhere. I CAN READ IN A CAR when I take these. Unbelievable. I recommended them to a police officer I knew who said when she was riding shotgun (passenger side) and had to read maps, etc. she got sick. She swears by them now.

Be sure to take with a full glass of water. The only side effect, sometimes, especially with not enough water, is sometimes you may belch. Try taking one first and see how it works.

Ginger Root is also good for inflammation in the body and digestion. I take them before and after a meal if my gut is feeling iffy or the food is really spicy.

I've taken 6 or so during a particularly bumpy flight, with good effects.

Also, since I have been having some gastro issues due to stress, I am routinely taking 2 ginger root capsules with each meal. It helps.

Do YOU have any remedies you've discovered that make life more pleasant? Please share.
