My weight loss journey actually began in December, tracking began on another website in January and I have lost 5 pounds. Pretty much on track for getting down to 130 by August 9 (which was a goal of 1# per week). I don't know what kind of fit Sparkpeople is going to be for me, because although I will journal my food and eat smaller portions of everything except vegetables and fruit, I am not a calorie counter or a snacker. I am also skeptical of the USDA guidelines (seriously, who can eat that many servings of grain and lose weight?) I'd say my major influences at this time are Nina Planck and Michael Pollan. I just want to eat a balanced diet and few enough calories to lose and later maintain a healthy weight. At 5'3", the least I have weighed as an adult is 123# back when I was 23. That was probably less than when I was in high school or college by a few pounds. I was actually thin then. Fit in a size 6. With my build, I can't picture getting down to the lower end of the "normal" BMI for my height.

My Goals:
My goals are to lose weight and then maintain a healthier weight while also maintaining excellent overall fitness and participating in fun exercise activities like cross country skiing, biking, kayaking and hiking.

My Program:
My program includes eating a healthy diet of unprocessed to minimally processed foods including a lot of vegetables and fruit, exercise including cross country skiing (best year ever as far as snow this year), resuming my bike commute when the roads and bike paths are clear and starting a strength training program.

Personal Information:
I'm from Wisconsin and I enjoy a lot of outdoor sports. When I was 23, I weighed 123 which is the least I have weighed since prior to college. During my 20's and 30's, I have seen my weight creep up in fits and starts and I want to look better in clothes and ensure long term participation in the sports I love.

Other Information:
My major food influences at this point include Nina Planck's "Real Food: What to Eat and Why" and Michael Pollan's books "In Defense of Food" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma". These have really reinforced my convictions that eating unprocessed, local and organic food as much as possible is best. As Michael Pollan says, "Shake the hand that feeds you."
