December 26, 2016. It's been three years!


Today Jan 21st back up to 188.

This year 2013 I will be 50. My goal is to lose 50 pounds in 50 weeks!

I also just learnt that I have high cholesterol, January,2013. I am hoping to avoid the medication. So I am following the dash diet which is recommended by the American Heart institute.

I eat between 1200 and 1500 calories and go to curves 3 times a week. Use the nutrition calculator it really helps stay in the game! Welcome and just one step at a time we will get this. www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/

This is why I weigh daily. I like to catch that upward movement immediately. I don't care if it's water, it isn't a big deal to dial it back for a few days. And I never allow myself to eat more to compensate for any kind of activity. I let my scale be my guide and my food be my method. I never worry about it, And I track my food.

My weight has gone up and down and up and down for 20 years now! This time I am really reminding myself that maintaining my weight loss will be an everyday effort. That tracking food and exercise are for the rest of my life! And I am ok with that.

I lost my weight slowly and learned much, I just have to stay with it for life.
One thing I do is visualize where I was. Putting on my too tight clothes, then deciding to stay home because I hated the way I looked and felt.

I had difficulties when I first started maintenance. I hadn't really added too many extra calories, yet the scale kept creeping up. Once I moved them back down to my weight loss levels for a few weeks and tried increasing them gradually again, I was able to add more a little at a time without gaining weight. I think I had also added too many of the wrong types of food when I increased my calories and that probably had an effect as well. Our bodies can be funny sometimes and I think they do "get used to" us functioning at a certain level and respond by putting on weight even if we haven't increased our calories by all that much. I also find that if I make big changes in the kind of food I eat in a particular week, I'll often have an unexpected loss or gain even if my calories are more or less the same, so that could be another culprit. I'd suggest going back to what you were doing before until you take off what you've gained then experiment with where you can make small modifications. You may want to try increasing your calories one day and eating at your weight-loss calorie level the next day to make an even more gradual transition. I really don't think there's a secret to figuring out maintenance so be patient and experiment with what works for you and what doesn't.

Dear Pat,
You are the one person that I can count on to pick me up. Even when you are not at your best I still love you. You are patient, intelligent and are a fantastic person. You always care so much about my well being, thanks for being their.

Hey just think of all the good you are doing for your health. I'd rather lose or maintain rather than than gain, so just remember you are Awesome!

So this time around I am motivating myself to maintain my weight loss. I will spend this year learning how to do that.

- The likelihood of regaining weight when you reach goal is 80% - 95%.
- When you've maintained for 2 years the likelihood of regain drops to 50%.*
- When you've maintained for 5 years the likelihood of regain drops to 27%!*

So I am aiming to lose the fifty pounds and then maintaining for 5 years and then for life! I need to keep this in mind always!

Weight management requires life long attention and I know now that isn't likely to change.

Eternal vigilance will always be essential, and in particular sustaining all the techniques I know and can learn to avoid the temptation
