July 30, 2012. Just coming back from hairline fracture in my right foot. I have been away for over a year. This injury took place after 1/2 marathon on 03/20/2011. I have finally started running with a very slow running group hoping to get back to my previous status. I will definitely NOT do 1/2's anymore but will stay with 5K and 10K's. So excited to be back outdoors with friends.

January 11, 2010. I have been in recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery that was done on 11/11/2009. It's been two months since the surgery. I am ready to start shedding the pounds.

June 2009, I started this journey over a month ago when I was at crossroads with myself. I was at a point that I had contacted doctors and settled on an lapband surgery because I thought if I do this that there is no going back. I had set the date for June 11 to travel to Detroit. Mind you this was detailed and then I saw ABC morning showing 3 people who had lost over 100 pounds, one of them was Birdie, from Sparkspeople. I had never heard of that site before... I had subscription to WW and other paid sites. You can tell I had been doing this for a long time. Lose 10-20 lbs and gaining them back over and over again.

After watching them on TV and doing the weight loss without surgery gave me reason to doubt that maybe I can do this without cutting into my body.

Now, I am so glad that my eye caught that show and feel blessed that God wanted me to see that show that day. After joining SparkePeople, I made sure that not do I log what I eat, fitness, but really try to surround myself with people. The Spark PEOPLE are the reason that I am still here today. I know someone is seeing me as I am and are very understanding when I need understanding and are encouraging when I need encouragement, because they want me to succeed. I love reading how many have overcome their struggles, which in turn helps me to formulate what works for me.

I share every log, because I want to be transparent. I have never been open to others about my struggles before, but for some reason this site just invites you to share your uphill struggles and your happy successes. I am VERY optimistic that I WILL SUCCEED!!!


On July 23, 2009, I stepped out of my box and joined the Beginner Women's running 2 month program which will end in 5K run in Raleigh. I hope to participate in it. I did the Saturday run on July 25 and over the weekend my world just came crashing down on me. So, I was not able to do the activity all last week, but I'm back today (August 4). I met the group and we did a 2 mile walk/run. I will be there to on Thursday again. I'm looking forward to this, a very nice group.

I am 52, married (just celebrated 28 years of married bliss). I have 2 sons in college. I used to be 5'1-1/4", but now I just say 5', must be the weight, it shortened me.

    Hi Pam! I'm glad to hear you are injury free!! Yeah! I also have been absent way too long. I'm trying to work my way back into it. I know it works, I've done it. Why, oh why, do I let my self go off track???!!! Well, one step at a time. Today I am trying to march forward. Hope you are well. I'll try to stay in better touch.

    Hi Pam,

    Congrats on the marathon!! Way to go!! Sorry to hear you have had such a tough time of it since the marathon. It certainly shakes us when we have been doing so well and meeting so many goals and then hit a wall with an injury. It really knocks us back. You'll get back on track and do better than ever. I so hear you on gaining weight after a difficult time. I did that last year after surgery and gained about 30 back. Don't ride yourself to hard on it. This is all a learning process. Unfortunately we are not perfect. We have set backs. Hey, look at us, we're back on SP and moving forward. I know at least for me, in the past I might have thrown in the towel for months if not more. SP promotes a healthy lifestyle, that's why we come back to it. You were doing fabulous before and you'll be doing it again. One day at a time, one meal at a time.

    I've been doing well. I joined a gym this summer with my daughter and we go 6 days a week. The results are starting to show and I've lost most of the 30 I had put back on. I think the biggest difference for me though, is mentally. I just feel so much more confident now. I know I can do it and it's not a race for me any longer. It's not a disaster if I have an "off" meal. I can eat a better meal the next time. I guess what I'm saying is I've let go of the "diet mentally" thing. All for the better. I'm not punishing myself over and over for an unhealthy meal. Which would typically result in me gaining more weight because then the towel gets thrown in and the "what's one more bad meal" mentality kick in, and then the next thing you know, it's many months later and many pounds later when I would finally let the fog lift and face my new reality.

    Everything else has been going well. Busy painting and getting ready for a show. I've also put my paintings in two new stores. Trying to branch out to the "world wide web". Lol. I'm dense when it comes to computers so that's pretty funny. Kids will be going back to school in just over a month! I can't believe how long summer break from college is and how fast it goes!

    Ok, I've chatted your ear off so I'll stop now. Missed you and so glad you are back. Let's keep in touch more if we can and spur each other on. We can do it!!
