Since moving to New Orleans, I became fascinated with boxing. I'm scrappy, who knew?

I've gone from 350 to 155, throughout food writing, the death of my mother, grandmother, confronting abusive relationships and moving to New Orleans and then New York on a mission to alter how healthy cooking and weight loss are discussed.

I'm a chef in Brooklyn, in addition to writing articles on great cooking techniques, leading research and things that push obesity forward. For my students, I've stopped suicides, helped relationships happen and provide solutions to the tricks and hidden hurdles of maintaining.

Well into my maintenance, I discovered boxing and fell in love, both training and using old boxing equipment for a canvas.

You see, for me "losing weight" had little to do with saving my health (though it did) or finding my attractiveness (I wouldn't kick myself out of bed!), but saving my soul. I wanted to know who Russ was beyond the baggage, be it physical or emotional.

It's been a long winding journey to discovering that, and I'm pretty determined to have fun doing it.

But more than myself, make keeping weight off more attainable for more people. Maintainers -- those who work at keeping it off as hard as they lost it -- are some the bravest, most creative people I know, and it's my mission to celebrate them.

Fitness Minutes: 126

My Goals:
To make sure people are supported on ALL phases of weight loss -- the after as well as before.

To stay within 155-165 pounds, constantly tweaking all the way and finally -- FINALLY -- quit smoking.

To develop my art and intellect and be the best possible version of myself I can be, and encourage others to do the same.

My Program:
Cardio: 45 minutes or more a day in my target heart zone or higher

Lifting: Mostly body weight and toning exercises with an increased emphasis on range of motion and flexibility to box better.

Eating: I eat every three hours -- lot of zip lock bags are involved with this. I've eaten low fat and low carb to some success; my eating's more in line with the Mediterranean Diet now.

Supplements: Flax and Fish oil, Vita D and Glucosamine + MSM, Daily Multi to cover the bases, and I'm experimenting to see if that antioxidant hype (read: Acai) has any merit.

Etc: Chiropracty and specialized orthopedics to keep my mutant feet from mangling my body, and Reiki healing to keep me chipper and positive.

Personal Information:
I went from a mild-mannered music critic standing in a big trench coast in the back of rock clubs to a food writer, recipe crafter, and much to my surprise, a post-weight advocate.

Other Information:
"The Great Depression tightened its grip on a shaken nation in 1931, but not on the resolve of one strong-willed St. Louis woman confronting another sort of wound. Desolated by her husband’s suicide in 1930, she forged her own new purpose in life. She spent more than a year assembling a collection of favorite recipes and sent it forth into the world, at her own expense, with a title that defied grief: The Joy of Cooking."

    Hey Russ!

I finally got on and searched for you. I haven't been real active here lately because returning to school is kicking my butt!

Not sure when our next trip to NOLA will be. It would be nice to get there in the next couple of months but we'll be there in mid July for sure for Mark's grandmother's 100th birthday. And yes, you're family now (like it or not!) so you're definitely invited!

Give me a call in the next few days from your new number because I didn't get it saved in my phone when you called the other day.

How was your first Mardi Gras as an official New Orleanian?!?

    LOVE YOU!!!
