Finally Failed!

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Usually when I write a blog it's about some goal I've met or personal best I've reached. I've 'failed' a lot of times during the year I've been on Spark People. I just don't usually write about it.

So, today I was scheduled to run my last really long run in my marathon training schedule. I was to complete 26 miles.

Right now though, I'm fighting a cold. I bucked up this morning and headed out anyway, even though I really didn't want to. I made it 18.5 miles outside, and it was really a struggle after mile13.

I came home and hopped on the treadmill hoping to finish it out, and I did make it to 24 miles! (Yay) But didn't feel like doing the whole 26. I probably walked around 3 or 4 miles.

But hey, it's ok that I didn't reach that goal today! It's ok I ran slow and had to walk!

Want to know what happened durning the first part of my run though? I met my next door neighbor... and you're not going to believe this... but she's training for the same marathon I am! How cool is that!

Even better, she wants to do some duathlons and triathlons in the future! So that is super exciting, and the next time I see her I'm going to have her join Spark People!

I wouldn't consider this a failure at all. You still did 24 miles which is a lot more than many people do in training for a marathon. If you can run 24, you can definitely run another 2.2 miles to complete the marathon. You did awesome. I always love reading about how you fit running into your schedule and make it work no matter what. Your dedication and perseverance are really inspiring!!

You know what, I am in the same boat, but not because of sickness.

I wimped out and ran 21 on the treadmill, because I didn't want to be caught in the rain. It was really just an excuse to control my environment. And as you might know (I'm sure you do), running on a treadmill is nowhere close to running outside.

Now, I'm punishing myself mentally and thinking I might go out tomorrow and try to get a few good hours in.

You're not alone. But make sure to take care of yourself and not get sick either.

Thank you for sharing your failure! It's easy to tell everyone our successes, but not so easy to do the opposite. I'm definitely no where near being as physically active as you, but your blog is inspiring.
